Kandi Burruss Reacts to Her 'Othello' Revival Getting Snubbed by Tony Awards: 'Of Course I'm Disappointed'
The revival of the William Shakespeare tragedy stars Denzel Washington as Othello and Jake Gyllenhaal as Iago
set Broadway box office records, making $2.8 million in one week of previews, and is the highest-grossing play of all time on Broadway
Kandi Burruss is remaining positive in the wake of Broadway's Othello not being nominated for any 2025 Tony Awards.
Burruss, 48, who co-produced the revival with husband Todd Tucker, took to Instagram to voice her dismay over the production's snub.
"Well y'all… Othello didn't get the Tony nomination. Of course I'm disappointed, but I'm still beyond proud to be part of this phenomenal production. Every time I watch our cast, I'm blown away and inspired," the singer, who previously earned a Tony nod for producing the 2022 revival of The Piano Lesson, wrote.
Directed by Kenny Leon, the revival of the William Shakespeare tragedy stars Denzel Washington as Othello and Jake Gyllenhaal as Iago. The production broke Broadway box office records, making $2.8 million in one week of previews, the highest weekly gross for a Broadway play.
"#DenzelWashington @jakegyllenhaal — you both are delivering a masterclass in acting every single night. Truly unforgettable performances," Burruss said of the play's leading men, while also congratulating "all the nominees" for this year's Tony Awards.

The Grammy winner kept things positive at the end of her post, writing that she's "already focused on what's next" and "not giving up on the dream."
"'Tell Me No' by Whitney Houston (co-written by yours truly 😉✍🏾) is on repeat right now… and it hits different today," Burruss said, mentioning the Whitney Houston track she co-wrote for the late singer's fifth studio album, Just Whitney.
"To anyone chasing a dream — don't let a 'no' stop your yes. The journey continues," Burruss concluded her post.

Amid the Shakespearean revival's success, the production has also been criticized for its hefty ticket prices — with some tickets selling for upwards of $900.
The play's helmer weighed in on the high ticket prices in an interview with the Daily Mail, comparing seeing the show to watching an L.A. Lakers game or watching a Beyoncé concert.
'So to me, with a commercial industry, people are paying what they think it's worth,' Leon said. 'A guy showed up the other night and he said, 'I paid $921 for this ticket and you know what? I don't want a cent back. I want to figure out how to come back.''
'That's what I feel proud of every night,' he continued. 'I have a thousand people in there and it's so diverse… I'm proud of the box office and I'm proud of what's on the stage.'
The 2025 Tony nominees for best revival of a play are Romeo + Juliet, Thornton Wilder's Our Town, Yellow Face and Eureka Day. Cynthia Erivo is hosting the ceremony, which will air live on CBS and Paramount+ on June 8.

Drinking Tequila And Tuscan Wine With Nick Jonas
Nick Jonas Courtesy of Nick Jonas Nick Jonas rose to fame with his siblings in the Jonas Brothers, but has since carved out an impressive solo and acting career, recently ending a Broadway run of ' The Last Five Years .' Along with his demanding performance schedule Jonas has also been managing Type 1 diabetes, founding his own organization Beyond Type One to raise awareness and funds for research and working with Dexcom (a glucose monitoring system) to inspire other young performers to continue their own dreams while living with diabetes. I spoke with Jonas about the his favorite drinks, his best moments from the show and the upcoming reunion tour with his brothers. What are your favorite wines and spirits? I'm a big fan of tequila, that's always been my go-to. I've had the opportunity to learn quite a bit about the process of making tequila over the years and it's just made me more and more of a fan of it. We also love a great bottle of wine in our house. I'm a big fan of California cabs and French Bordeaux. And you can't go wrong with an Aperol Spritz. What's your favorite way of enjoying tequila? My friends and I have a simple cocktail that we drink called the 'Especial.' It's basically just tequila on the rocks with soda water and an orange wedge. And it is quite deliciously refreshing. Nick Jonas with his wife Priyanka Chopra. Getty Images for Chopard Where are your favorite places to travel for food? I've got quite a few. My most recent trip to Barcelona (on tour with the Jonas Brothers) was incredible. I tried an oxtail paella that was pretty exceptional. My brother Joe is always in charge of picking the restaurants. And then, of course, Tuscany. The Rosewood Castiglion del Bosco is one of our favorite places to visit. A wine/food day in Italy is always amazing. You just wrapped up performing on Broadway in 'The Last Five Years.' What drew you to the show? It's a score that I've loved for a long time. And to be able to be in the first ever Broadway production of the show was a dream come true. I was first introduced to the music back in 2002 when I was in 'Beauty and the Beast' on Broadway. All my adult cast mates were were obsessed — I didn't fully understand all the themes — but I got to know it better as I got older. You're a strong advocate for people managing diabetes and recently hosted a group of performers backstage at the show. What advice did you give them? For any person living with diabetes, the challenge is how many more decisions you have to make daily and having the information to make those decisions. That includes the rest you get and keeping tracking of your glucose. And beyond the numbers it's about tracking your time and understanding your trends so you can give your best performance each night. The group that I met was amazing. I work with Dexcom to do advocacy work and empower others who are living with this disease to share their stories and make that web of connection just that much greater. We talked after the show and I answered their questions about what my experience has been living with type 1, and what things to expect and prepare themselves for as they step into careers in the entertainment industry. Nick Jonas meets with young performers managing diabetes. Carrington Spires What were your favorite moments in 'The Last Five Years?' One of my favorite songs of all time is the opening song from the show, 'Still Hurting.' It's Adrienne Warren's song, but it's just beautiful. Hearing that every night on the Broadway stage is kind of magical. My favorite song to sing is 'Nobody Needs to Know.' It's my character's last song and just a beautiful ballad. Heartbreaking and really personifies the feeling that you've made decisions that are going to complicate your life. And Jason Robert Brown's writing is really exceptional. I was honored to get to be a part of it. Who are some of your own idols you've gotten to have drinks and dinner with? Tiger Woods. I was able to play a few holes alongside him at a celebrity invitational some years ago. Tiger and Freddie Couples each had a team, and as an avid golfer growing up it was pretty magical to walk alongside the and hear their stories. Our family has gotten to know Jim Nantz quite well over the years as well. I had the chance to see him a few times at Augusta during The Masters — and he's brought his daughter to shows of ours over the years. What is your favorite guitar that you own? I've got a Gibson B-25 Natural acoustic that my wife got me. It's from 1964 or so — the shop didn't know the exact date. Then there's a beautiful green Gibson SG that I found at Mike's Music in Cincinnati. It's got this beautiful look to it and the sound is is unlike any Gibson SG I've ever played. It's really full and robust, but I can also play things that are more nuanced — sort of in The Edge from U2 space — which is really fun. The Jonas Brothers perform during the Times Square New Year's Eve 2025 Celebration. Getty Images What do you have coming up after this Broadway run? I've got a movie coming out with Paul Rudd called 'Power Ballads.' And my brothers and I shot a holiday movie for Disney+ that comes later this year for the holiday season. And then my brothers and I start our 20th Anniversary Tour on August 10th at MetLife Stadium. So after I finish 'The Last Five Years' I'm looking forward to some downtime with my family and some resting and recharging. And then it's right back to work. Is Paul Rudd really the nicest guy in America? Absolutely. He is a legend and one of the nicest and funniest people I've ever had the pleasure of working with.

Post Malone falls as stage breaks apart during Arizona concert
NEW YORK — Post Malone toppled off the stage while performing in Arizona this past weekend, when part of the stage broke apart beneath him. Footage filmed by an audience member shows the 18-time Grammy nominee, real name Austin Richard Post, waltzing up toward the edge of the stage holding up a red Solo cup and leaning down to toast with the fan filming Saturday in Glendale, Arizona. Their cups are about to make contact when the edge of the stage cracks off and the 'Sunflowers' singer, 29, topples out of sight, according to the now-viral video. 'I didn't mean to almost break your back,' the clip is captioned. That's a nod to the 'Pour Me a Drink' lyric, 'Yeah I've been breakin' my back,' which is what the Syracuse native was crooning just before he fell. The fan who posted the clip added, 'I am SO sorry Austin. I love you! Such an amazing show.' Billboard reports that Post quickly returned to the stage and resumed his performance at State Farm Stadium as if nothing happened, raising his cup once again to applause. At the time of publication, Post does not appear to have spoken about the incident, at least not on his Instagram. The show is part of Post's 'The Big Ass Stadium Tour,' which is set to head to Europe next month before returning stateside next spring. Post, who recently headlined Coachella, announced the tour back in November. But the year hasn't been all 'Sunflowers' and rainbows for Post, whose ex-fiancée Hee Sung 'Jamie' Park requested full physical custody of their 3-year-old daughter in April. The following month, Post reportedly filed a motion to dismiss his ex's petition.

HBCU Coach's Style Lands Her on Essence Festival Panel
NEW ORLEANS - On the sidelines, Alabama A&M head women's basketball coach Dawn Thornton is more than a strategist-she's a whole vibe. Thornton's presence is impossible to ignore, whether calling plays or calling attention with her bold game day fashion. Her signature looks have racked up over seven million views on Instagram this season alone. Now, the world beyond HBCU basketball is taking notice. Coach Thornton is set to join BeautyCon's highly anticipated "Play the Game, Get the Look" panel at the Essence Festival of Culture in New Orleans on July 5, a celebration of how style, beauty, and confidence intersect-both on the court and in culture. This year's Essence Festival is especially meaningful, marking the 55th anniversary of Essence Magazine under the theme "Made Like This." BeautyCon's platform is spotlighting women from the South who are shaping beauty narratives and pushing back against outdated, one-dimensional standards. Thornton embodies that mission perfectly. "My style is definitely an extension of who I am," Thornton shared. "It's confident, intentional, and sometimes a little extra-in the best way. That's how I coach, too. I'm big on presence and energy. Your preparation is your separation. Confidence isn't just taught-it's modeled. I want my players to always see that in me." For Dawn Thornton, fashion isn't just about aesthetics-it's a form of leadership. Her dynamic looks send a clear message to her HBCU student-athletes: You can be powerful, poised, and unapologetically yourself. "I want my players to know it's okay to stand out, to take pride in how you show up, and to lead with confidence on and off the court," she said. "You don't have to dim your light to lead. There's strength in owning who you are. If I can show up in a bold outfit and handle business, it shows them they can do the same in any space." In an industry where Black women are often pressured to shrink themselves to fit outdated expectations, Thornton refuses. "There's this idea that coaches, especially Black women, have to look or act a certain way to be taken seriously. I don't subscribe to that," she said. "I show up as myself-fully-and I coach with passion and excellence. That alone shifts the narrative." The "Play the Game, Get the Look" panel will dive deep into how beauty trends born in sports culture influence the wider world, especially in Black communities. The conversation will also explore how looking and feeling good feeds into the mindset of winning-on any stage. The connection between Dawn Thornton's HBCU hoops gameday fits and her coaching philosophy is seamless. "Game day is a whole vibe, and my look is part of the energy I bring," she explained. "Sometimes the goal is to make a bold statement. Other times, it's about feeling grounded and confident in my own skin. Either way, it's part of the game plan. How I show up visually matters just as much as how I show up mentally." Essence Festival and BeautyCon will run July 3–6, with daily events from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center in New Orleans. The event promises a vibrant mix of culture, conversation, and community, celebrating Black women in all their power, beauty, and brilliance.
