Helena Rowland: England's 97-7 victory over Spain just the start of the journey
A dominant display at Welford Road was marred only by a second-half red card for stand-in captain Marlie Packer following an adjudged illegal clearout on Spain's sole try scorer Claudia Pena.

John Mitchell's side, who were back in action for the first time since completing a Six Nations grand slam in April, play away to France next weekend before beginning their World Cup campaign against the United States on Friday, August 22 in Sunderland.
'We've got a big few months coming up,' versatile back Rowland, who was making her first Test start on the wing, told BBC Sport.
'It's all about trying to live every moment. We've definitely tried to keep evolving our game. Hopefully it will come together. This is just the start of our journey and hopefully there's more to come.'
Prop Sarah Bern claimed two of England's tries, while Maddie Feaunati, Lucy Packer, Jess Breach, Jade Shekells, Lilli Ives Campion, Emma Sing, May Campbell, Hannah Botterman, Abby Dow and Megan Jones also crossed for Test rugby's top-ranked nation.
'I don't score that many tries so to get three in a game is always nice,' added Rowland.
'We put in some pretty nice stuff there, glad to get it off the training park.
'There's still plenty of things to fix up, as we knew there always would be. It's the first game after quite a long time. It was enjoyable out there and we've got to focus on next week now.'

The English Premier League is set to gain another Scotland international - but it may not be good news for Steve Clarke. Established squad members such as Andy Robertson (Liverpool), John McGinn (Aston Villa), Nathan Patterson (Everton) and Aaron Hickey (Brentford) are all currently plying their trade in England's top flight. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad They are set to be joined by goalkeeper Angus Gunn, who has been a free agent since being released by Norwich City at the end of last season. Gunn spent four years as a permanent player at Carrow Road after a previous loan spell and said there was no explanation offered for not being offered a new contract. However, he is now set to make the leap from the English Championship to the EPL after transfer expert Fabrizio Romano claimed that a deal has been agreed for the stopper to join Nottingham Forest with 'immediate effect'. Scotland goalkeeper Angus Gunn is set to join Nottingham Forest. | SNS Group While the move can be viewed as good one on a personal level for Gunn, it may not be ideal as far as Scotland are concerned. Head coach Clarke is facing a conundrum in the goalkeeper department ahead of the World Cup qualifiers starting next month with Hearts veteran Craig Gordon, now 42, injured and no other keeper other than Gunn staking a firm claim for the gloves in recent times. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Gunn was number one at Norwich and has been first pick for Scotland when fit over the past two-and-a-half years since switching allegience from England. However, his move to Forest will likely see him sit on the bench most weeks as back-up to first-choice goalkeeper Matz Sels, who won the Golden Glove last season and will be the club's number one custodian for the 2025-26 campaign after signing a new deal. A lack of club minutes for Gunn could count against him at international level, which is also an issue for Liam Kelly, the Rangers back-up, who was a Scotland squad regular over several years but has missed out on recent selections. Ipswich Town youngster Cieran Slicker is unlikely to receive a call-up for the September qualifiers away to Denmark and Belarus after his horror debut against Iceland, while Ross Doohan, who stepped in at the last minute to face Liechtenstein in June, is now third-choice at Celtic after switching from Aberdeen this summer. The situation could see a return to the Scotland fold for Hearts goalkeeper Zander Clark, who has started the new campaign as the Tynecastle club's number one in Gordon's absence. He has been capped four times, most recently against Gibraltar in June last year prior to the Euros. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Clarke addressed the Scotland goalkeeper dilemma during the June camp. 'It's something that we have to address and something we have to look at. It's not going to change in a click of a finger. It's not going to change quickly. It's more for the long term and probably for the next head coach and the next head coach after that.'

Ben Doak stars for Liverpool in pre-season with youngster earning rave reviews before key Scotland fixtures
Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) BEN DOAK burst onto the Scottish national scene last year as Steve Clarke brought the youngster into the fold. But the Liverpool star who was on loan at Middlesbrough last campaign had his season cut short by injury. But Doak has been involved heavily in Arne Slot's pre season even starting Monday night's clash with Athletic Bilbao. The winger impressed in his 56 minute showing against the Reds European opposition. He played a crucial part in helping Liverpool go into a two nil lead early on, putting a key cross in to the box which Darwin Nunez eventually finished off. The young Scotsman also thought he ended up on the score sheet as his strike ended up in the back of the net, but it went down as an own-goal. Despite not officially making it on the score-sheet, Liverpool fans raved about the youngster's performance on social media. Liverpool posted an image of the youngster on X, and fans made their feelings known in the replies. "I have a LOT of faith in Ben Doak" one fan replied. Another added: "Our future's extremely bright." "It was a cross good approach play by him, direct, making things happen," said another. COFFEE CLUB Has Ben Doak been mishandled by Scotland manager Steve Clarke? A fourth supporter called him a "special talent". A Celtic fan also replied, pleading to Doak's former club to snap the youngster up on a loan deal. He featured just twice for the Hoops before his move to Liverpool, one of those appearances coming in an Old Firm. But he has heavily impressed for Scotland, and has picked up six caps for his country. In a squad that lacks wide players, Ben Doak is exactly the type of player that Steve Clarke needs. And the Tartan Army will be relieved to see the electric winger back firing for the Reds. Scotland have key World Cup qualifiers coming up this year, starting with games against Denmark and Belarus in September. With his pre-injury form for Scotland, many fans will be calling for the youngster to be thrown straight back into Steve Clarke's starting 11. Chelsea urged to sign 'inspirational' £40m Man Utd transfer target this summer
Former Chelsea star Emmanuel Petit has urged his old club to sign Manchester United transfer target Emiliano Martinez this summer. The Red Devils saw a loan bid rejected by Aston Villa last month – but the 32-year-old goalkeeper is thought to be available for around £40m. Robert Sanchez, who currently operates as Chelsea's No.1 goalkeeper, faced plenty of criticism for a number of his performances last season. Martinez, a World Cup winner with Argentina in 2022, would arguably take Chelsea to the next level – and help them challenge for the top-flight title. In The Mixer: Exclusive analysis, FPL tips and transfer talk sent straight to your inbox every week – click here and sign up before Friday to make sure you don't miss the first edition. 'Emiliano Martinez would be an inspiration in the Chelsea dressing room,' Petit told ahead of the 2025-26 campaign. 'I have criticised his behaviour in the past but he knows what it takes to win titles, he has that experience. 'He can inspire other players and he has all the qualities needed of a top goalkeeper. 'He would be a very good signing for Chelsea and 32 isn't old for a goalkeeper. 'I think he'd link well with Enzo Maresca and the players already at the club. 'One fear I have is for Aston Villa, I am worried about them with top players leaving the club, I'm not sure where it will leave them next season.' It is believed that Martinez rebuffed the chance to move to the lucrative Saudi Pro League earlier this summer. Martinez has shined in the Premier League since he moved to Villa Park from Arsenal for £20m five years ago, making 212 appearances to date. More Trending The Argentine was named The Best FIFA Men's Goalkeeper in both 2022 and 2024. But William Gallas believes Chelsea would be wise to avoid a move for Martinez in the summer window, which remains open until September 1. 'I have some serious doubts about whether he would be a good fit for Chelsea,' Gallas told Prime Casino. 'I don't know if he's got the right profile to be the goalkeeper of Chelsea. When I think about his antics, I just don't think he would be a positive addition to the club.'
