Narayana vows safe drinking water across all civic bodies
Vijayawada: Municipal administration and urban development minister P Narayana said the state government is determined to provide safe drinking water to households across all municipalities.
Addressing the media after a review meeting chaired by Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu at CM camp office on Saturday, the minister stated that tenders have been invited for laying drinking water pipelines to cover 85 per cent of households, with support from the AMRUT scheme. He said Rs 5,350 crore, sanctioned by the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank, will be used for completing both drinking water and drainage projects.
Blaming the previous YSRCP government for lapses in securing Central funds due to failure in releasing the state's share, Narayana stressed the new government's commitment to infrastructure development.
On the solid waste issue, the minister said Andhra Pradesh generates 8,000 tonnes of waste daily. While waste-to-energy plants are already operational in Guntur and Visakhapatnam, six new plants are planned in Rajahmundry, Nellore, Kadapa, Kurnool, Vijayawada, and Tirupati. Once operational, they can convert up to 7,500 tonnes of garbage into power. An allocation of Rs 225 crore has been made for new garbage clearing equipment. He also said the government is working to distribute TIDCO houses by clearing Rs 140 crore in pending bank loans for the beneficiaries.

Lalit Modi's Plea Seeking BCCI To Pay ED Penalty Dismissed By Supreme Court
The Supreme Court on Monday junked a plea filed by former cricket administrator Lalit Modi seeking an order to the BCCI to pay a penalty of Rs 10.65 crore imposed on him by the ED for violating the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA). A bench of Justices P S Narasimha and R Mahadevan, however, said Modi will be entitled to avail civil remedies as available according to law. The Bombay High Court on December 19 last year had imposed a cost of Rs 1 lakh on Modi while dismissing his petition seeking an order to the BCCI to pay a penalty of Rs 10.65 crore imposed on him by the Enforcement Directorate for violating FEMA. The high court had said the petition was "frivolous and wholly misconceived" as the adjudication authority under FEMA has imposed the penalty on Modi. Modi, in his plea, said he was appointed as vice president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India, during which period he was also the chairman of the Indian Premier League governing body, a subcommittee of the BCCI. The plea claimed that the BCCI is supposed to indemnify him as per the bylaws. The HC bench, however, referred to a Supreme Court judgment of 2005, which said the BCCI does not fall under the definition of a 'state' as defined under Article 12 of the Constitution. Despite clear orders from the apex court, Modi filed this petition in 2018, the HC bench noted. "In matters of alleged indemnification of the petitioner (Modi) in the context of penalties imposed upon the petitioner by the ED, there is no question of discharge of any public function, and therefore, for this purpose, no writ could be issued to the BCCI," the HC had said. "In any event, the reliefs are wholly misconceived. This petition is frivolous, and accordingly, we dismiss this petition," the court had said and directed Modi to pay a sum of Rs 1 lakh to the Tata Memorial Hospital within four weeks. States/UTs to borrow Rs 2.86 lakh crore in Jul-Sep quarter: RBI
States and Union Territories combined will raise about Rs 2.86 lakh crore from markets in the quarter July-September 2025, the Reserve Bank of India ( RBI ) has indicated. The expected market borrowing plans have been decided upon by the RBI after consulting with the State Governments/Union Territories. The gross market borrowing of Rs 8.00 lakh crore shall be completed through 26 weekly auctions, a Ministry of Finance statement had indicated way back in March. The market borrowing will be spread over 3, 5, 7, 10, 15, 30, 40 and 50-year securities. The government intends to bring the fiscal deficit below 4.5 per cent of GDP by the end of the financial year 2025-26. The difference between total revenue and total expenditure of the government is termed the fiscal deficit. It is an indication of the total borrowings that the government may need. As announced in the Union budget on February 1, the government plans to borrow Rs 15.4 lakh crore from the market during FY 2025-26. The government aims to use its market borrowings for capital expenditure as it is largely non-inflationary.
