Don't against Shahi Idgah over use of park: Delhi HC to DDA
Justice Vikas Mahajan issued notice to the DDA on a petition filed by the Shahi Idgah Managing Committee and asked the authority for a response.
"Renotify on September 10. In the meantime, having regard to the fact that the waqf tribunal is non-functional, where the petitioner has instituted a suit, it is directed that the DDA shall not take any action pursuant to its notice dated February 11, 2025," the court said.
The petitioner's counsel said DDA's notice of February 11 demanded ₹12 lakh for using the park surrounding the Idgah for holding Ijtema, a religious evet, in December, 2024.
The counsel said the park was part of the Idgah premises and DDA had no claim over it, and a suit was filed before the waqf tribunal against the authority's claim over it.
However, since the tribunal was non-functional due to lack of quorum, DDA should hold its hand, he said.
The DDA counsel said a single judge of the high court gave a finding on the park being DDA's property while dealing with the petitioner's plea for installing a Maharani Lakshmi Bai statue there.
The lawyer said the single judge's decision was appealed against by the petitioner before a division bench, which did not intervene.
DDA claimed the religious function was held in its park without prior approval.
The petitioner's counsel said the single judge had no power to rule on the issue of title of the park and the division bench had left open all contentions of the parties.

NEW DELHI: Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Friday announced a decision concerning the slum clusters of the capital, directing the Railways, Delhi Development Authority (DDA), and all government departments to ensure that no slum in the city is demolished. In cases where removal becomes unavoidable due to development projects or other reasons, alternative housing must be provided in advance. The CM further stated that approximately 50,000 houses constructed years ago in the outer areas of the city will be renovated and allocated to slum dwellers. She said that the flats will be allotted under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana – Urban (PMAY-U). She pointed out that under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM), Delhi government agencies such as DUSIB and DSIIDC were allocated substantial funds. However, due to the inaction of previous government, approximately Rs 732 crore was left unused. She added that the Centre has approved the utilisation of these funds for the renovation of the dilapidated flats. The CM also stated that if required, the government will amend the existing policy on slum clusters and will even approach the court to protect their housing rights. Gupta said that the slums are an inseparable part of the capital, with residents who have been living there for decades. She criticised the opposition for using slum dwellers as a political vote bank, asserting that her government is making efforts to ensure their rightful recognition as residents of Delhi.

NEW DELHI: The Additional Solicitor General (ASG) informed the Delhi High Court on Friday that the Central Government has decided to withdraw its directive recommending six cuts in the film Udaipur Files. Islamic scholar Arshad Madani and Mohammed Javed—one of the accused in the murder case—petitioned the Supreme Court to stop the film's release, arguing it was inflammatory and communal. Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing for Madani, claimed the film spreads hatred and unfairly targets the Muslim community, warning against allowing hate speech under the guise of free speech. Earlier, the Supreme Court permitted the government to review the movie. A review panel subsequently recommended changes before release. The film's producers then approached the court to challenge the HC's stay on the release. Madani contends the movie generalises a criminal act, portraying an entire community as complicit or supportive of terrorism. Meanwhile, the murder case is ongoing in a Special NIA Court, with hearings set to resume after the summer recess.

Delhi government may change policy, approach court to protect slum dwellers rights: CM
NEW DELHI: Asserting no slum dwellers will be harassed anymore in Delhi, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Friday said her government, if required, will amend the existing policy and even approach the court to protect their housing rights. The chief minister asked all government departments as well as the Indian Railways and the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) to refrain from demolishing jhuggi-jhopri (JJ) clusters in the city. The policy on slum clusters could be amended if required to protect the rights of the slum dwellers, she said in a statement. Gupta said the government will renovate 50,000 dilapidated houses built years ago under Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM)scheme, and allot them to slum dwellers. These flats will now be handed over to slum dwellers under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana Urban (PMAY-U), she added. Gupta made major decisions concerning the slum clusters of the capital and instructed all government departments, Railways and Delhi Development Authority (DDA) to ensure that no slum in Delhi is demolished, said the statement issued by the Chief Minister's Office. The chief minister said that directives have accordingly been issued to all concerned departments, including the Railways and DDA, to ensure that no slum is demolished. There are 675 slum clusters in Delhi consisting of over three lakh dwellings. Around 50 per cent of these slums are located on the DDA's land, 23 per cent on government or private land and 22 per cent on the land owned by agencies such as the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) and Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board, said the statement. South-East Delhi accounts for the highest number of 144 slum clusters followed by 109 in North Delhi, 92 in Central Delhi, 68 in West Delhi, 54 in Shahdara, 49 in New Delhi, 46 in South-West Delhi, 43 in East Delhi, 34 in North-West Delhi, 30 in South Delhi, 30 and six in North-East Delhi, it added.
