50K houses to be allotted for Delhi's slum dwellers: CM Gupta
The CM further stated that approximately 50,000 houses constructed years ago in the outer areas of the city will be renovated and allocated to slum dwellers. She said that the flats will be allotted under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana – Urban (PMAY-U).
She pointed out that under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM), Delhi government agencies such as DUSIB and DSIIDC were allocated substantial funds. However, due to the inaction of previous government, approximately Rs 732 crore was left unused. She added that the Centre has approved the utilisation of these funds for the renovation of the dilapidated flats.
The CM also stated that if required, the government will amend the existing policy on slum clusters and will even approach the court to protect their housing rights.
Gupta said that the slums are an inseparable part of the capital, with residents who have been living there for decades. She criticised the opposition for using slum dwellers as a political vote bank, asserting that her government is making efforts to ensure their rightful recognition as residents of Delhi.

Trade tariff uncertainty & US Fed rates led to volatile swings in bullion
Live Events (You can now subscribe to our (You can now subscribe to our ETMarkets WhatsApp channel The month of July 2025 displayed a two-way trend for bullion, offering both buyers and sellers opportunities to book profits. Bullion began the month in a range-bound manner as investors assessed US Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell's cautious stance on rate cuts. Meanwhile, a weaker US Dollar Index lent support to the greenback-priced the trend shifted, and gold prices reacted sharply to a series of unexpected announcements from US President Donald prices surged after the US Senate, controlled by Republicans, passed a wide-ranging tax-cut and spending bill, dubbed the 'big, beautiful bill.' The bill proposed significant cuts to several social service programs and was projected to add $3 trillion to the fiscal deficit over the next decade. This raised fiscal concerns and drove investors toward the safe-haven asset— addition, President Trump rattled global markets by announcing a wave of tariffs on various countries: 50% on US copper imports, 35% on imports from Canada, blanket duties of 15–20% on most other trade partners, and 30% on imports from Mexico and the European Union, all effective from August 1. These measures followed failed trade negotiations with major US European Union and Mexico called the tariffs unfair and disruptive, with the European Commission preparing to target $84.1 billion worth of US goods for potential retaliatory tariffs if talks failed. To add to the uncertainty, President Trump publicly expressed a desire to fire Fed Chair Jerome geopolitical tensions escalated as Israel launched powerful airstrikes in Damascus, damaging the Defence Ministry and striking near the presidential palace. The attack increased geopolitical worries and further supported demand for gold. In Japan, the ruling coalition lost control of the upper house, weakening Prime Minister Ishiba's authority as the US tariff deadline developments caused jitters in the markets and pushed safe-haven demand sharply higher. Both MCX Gold and Gold Spot surged, touching Rs 100,329 per 10 grams and $3,431 per ounce, what goes up must come down. The final week of July brought an abrupt reversal. Both MCX Gold and Gold Spot fell sharply—by over 2%—after President Trump clarified that he was not planning to fire Powell, though he continued criticizing him for not cutting interest Trump struck a trade deal with Japan to lower auto tariffs, marking the most significant agreement since the tariff announcements in April 2025. Similarly, the US reached a framework trade agreement with the European Union, imposing a 15% import tariff on most EU goods—thus averting a major trade war between the two global trading month-end, the Federal Reserve kept interest rates unchanged and gave little guidance on potential cuts, reducing the appeal of the zero-yield the US and Mexico agreed to extend their existing trade deal by 90 days to allow more time for negotiations toward a new agreement. This further dampened gold's safe-haven the near term, MCX Gold October Futures (CMP: Rs 98,700) is expected to decline towards Rs 96,500 per 10 grams.(The author is DVP- Research, Non-Agri Commodities and Currencies, Angel One Ltd : Recommendations, suggestions, views and opinions given by the experts are their own. ‘Nikle beta asharam nirashawadi': Delhi CM's poetic taunt at Opposition over Operation Sindoor debate
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has taken a poetic jibe at the Opposition for raising questions on India's action against terrorism during Operation Sindoor, saying they have put faith in the words of the foreign rulers. Speaking in the Delhi Assembly during a debate on Operation Sindoor and Operation Mahadev, Rekha Gupta recited a few lines from Kaka Hathrasi's 'Naam Roop ka Bhed' to take a jibe at the Opposition. She said, "Naam mila kuch aur to shakl-akal kuch rahe hain koyla, Lala Gangaram ji, rukhe Makhanlal, jheenkte dada-dadi. Nikle beta Asharam niraashavaadi." Then she goes, "Jinko apni desh ki sena ke vaktavya par vishwas nahi, jinko apne pradhan mantri par vishvas nahi, wo vishwas karte hain doosre dekhon ke aakhaon par [Those who don't trust the statements of their own country's army, who don't trust their own Prime Minister, place their faith in the words of foreign nations.]' Rekha Gupta said Operation Sindoor was a befitting reply to Pakistan after the Pahalgam terror attack, asserting that Prime Minister Narendra Modi played a huge role in protecting the dignity of 'our sisters'. Hitting out at the Congress-led INDIA bloc, the chief minister said, 'These people [Opposition] do not love Bharat, but they love anti-national forces because they see their own reflection in them.' 'The opposition parties came together to form INDIA bloc. The name is 'INDIA' but if you listen to them, it feels like they are spokespersons for Pakistan... Even in the Lok Sabha, many people raised questions on Operation Sindoor. They do not trust their own army, their own prime minister but they trust foreign countries,' she said. Rekha Gupta also brought up the 1947 Partition and said, 'In 1947, your party [Congress] was in power. You took credit for India's Independence but not for Partition. Why didn't you take responsibility of 1962 Indo-China war?'

Karnataka transport union strike hits daily life, Bengaluru Metro sees heavy rush
The ongoing indefinite strike by employees of the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporations (KSRTC) has led to widespread disruption of bus services across the state, with a sharp increase in commuters turning to Namma Metro in impact of the bandh has been particularly evident at the Majestic Metro Station, where a heavy rush of passengers was reported on Tuesday, as limited services by the Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) left many commuters with few from the city's Shivajinagar Bus Stand show a few buses plying as usual. Inter-city bus services remain largely unaffected. However, the transport strike has severely impacted inter-state and intra-state bus operations, leaving many passengers stranded. Public transport services have been severely affected in several parts of Karnataka including Hubballi, Davanagere, Hoskote, Bagalkote, Belagavi, Tumakuru, Mysuru, Mandya and Ramanagara. Bus operations towards the Kalyana Karnataka and North-West Karnataka regions have come to a complete halt, leaving thousands of passengers stranded or forced to seek alternate modes of transport. Karnataka Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy said, 'In Bengaluru, 100 per cent of buses are plying on the roads. In the districts, about 50 per cent of services are running and officials expect the situation to normalise by the afternoon.'He further said, 'A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) has been filed in the Karnataka High Court regarding the strike. A hearing is scheduled for today, after which the government has said it will decide on further action.'Responding to criticism from the Opposition, Minister Reddy said the BJP had left the transport department saddled with a Rs 4,000 crore loan during their tenure. 'They never bought a single bus or recruited any driver or conductor. Now they are spreading lies,' he response to the growing disruption caused by the strike, the state government has issued precautionary measures to minimise public inconvenience. In a letter dated August 2, Dr NV Prasad, Principal Secretary of the Transport Department, requested the Department of Information Technology to advise all private IT companies in Karnataka—particularly those in Bengaluru—to allow employees to work from home during the strike period. The government said the advisory aims to ease pressure on the transport network and ensure continuity of services during a time of limited ongoing strike stems from a deadlock in negotiations between the Karnataka government and transport corporation employees. Talks held on Monday, including a two-hour meeting with Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, ended without resolution on the key issues of wage revision and arrears. The unions are demanding a 25 per cent hike over the current base pay of Rs 1,124, and arrears for 38 months—estimated at Rs 1,800 the Chief Minister appealed to the unions to withdraw the strike and offered to clear arrears for 14 months, union leaders refused, insisting on payment for the full period and an immediate start to wage revision talks. 'We worked all 38 months. This is not a fresh financial burden,' said HV Anantha Subbarao, president of the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation Staff and Workers Federation. He added that the issue had effectively narrowed to 24 months' arrears worth around Rs 1,000 however, termed the current demands excessive, noting that the previous government had already agreed to a 15 per cent hike and arrears from January 2022 to February 2023. 'Asking for 38 months now is not reasonable,' he said, citing the transport corporations' poor financial state. The CM reiterated the government's willingness to hold further talks, with Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy, Chief Secretary Shalini Rajneesh, and other officials present at the meeting.- EndsWith inputs from Nagarjun Dwarakanath IN THIS STORY#Karnataka
