NDTV Exclusive - What Nitish Kumar Asked Chirag Paswan On Stage During PM Rally

At a rally in Bihar's Siwan earlier this month, several leaders were seen gathered on stage, waiting for Prime Minister Narendra Modi to arrive. Amid this, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar was seen deep in conversation with Union Minister Chirag Paswan. NDTV now knows what transpired between the two.
Nitish Kumar asked Mr Paswan if he was going to contest the Bihar Assembly Elections, and if he was, then from where.
In a conversation with NDTV, Mr Paswan said, "When the PM was about to come on the stage, we were standing together. Chief Minister Nitish (Kumar) was there, Lalan Singh ji was there, and other leaders were also present. He never asked not to contest the elections. When we were talking, he was also sharing his experience of how he worked at the centre, and then he came to the state."
Chirag Paswan 's desire, which he revealed recently, to contest polls in his home state was not well received by the Chief Minister's party.
"I definitely want to contest the elections, and I have said this everywhere. Whether I will contest the elections or not will be decided by my party. The party itself will deliberate on whether the party will benefit from me contesting the elections," he said.
The 42-year-old said that Nitish Kumar also asked him about his wish to contest the assembly elections - likely in November - even as he was already a Union Minister.
Nitish Kumar also said that in the coming days, Mr Paswan was going to have a big role in Bihar politics. The Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) president told Nitish Kumar that he would contest the assembly elections only if the party and the people of Bihar wanted him to. He also said that if that happens, he would come to seek the blessings of the Chief Minister of Bihar.
The conversation can be read in many ways - 1st, Nitish Kumar's party JD(U) was unable to understand why Chirag Paswan wants to contest the upcoming elections - could it spoil their poll calculation? There's also another speculation that Mr Paswan was playing the politics of pressure in the NDA so that he could get more seats.
However, the Hajipur MP has insisted that he wasn't concerned about the number of seats, and he only wants winnable seats.
Mr Kumar's question for Mr Paswan is evidence of sorts that Chirag Paswan remains a puzzle for the JDU. Especially, since he has been saying that he wanted to contest the Bihar assembly elections, but hasn't even revealed his cards and has been putting the onus on the party.
This will also be the first assembly election when Mr Paswan and his party will seek votes for Nitish Kumar.
The LJP leader is part of the Bharatiya Janata Party-led coalition that runs the federal government. His party has five Lok Sabha MPs. In the last election, Chirag Paswan fought alone and ruined the poll plan of the JDU. In the last election, Nitish Kumar's JDU and Lalu Prasad's RJD fought the polls together. Mr Paswan was a BJP ally at that time, too. But this time around, he would have to convince the voters to vote for Nitish Kumar.
In the Lok Sabha polls, Mr Paswan sought votes in the name of PM Modi, but in the Bihar assembly polls, he will have to seek votes in the name of the Chief Minister. On a surface level, what seems like a non-issue could translate into a problem. Mr Paswan has been vocal about the policies of the Bihar government, especially on the issues of Dalits and law and order - issues that could inconvenience the JD(U).

He also wrote in a media article that a new Bharat is rising, and at the very foundation of this rise stands steel, a sector that was earlier stagnant but is now forging ahead.

Centre approves annual road plan of Rs 3,667 crore for Himachal: Public Works Minister Vikramaditya Singh
Shimla (Himachal Pradesh) [India], July 1 (ANI): Himachal Pradesh Public Works Minister Vikramaditya Singh stated that the Central Government has approved the Annual Plan of Rs 3,667 crore for the construction and upgrading of roads, bridges and related infrastructure in Himachal Pradesh for the financial year 2024-25. Singh on Monday said that the plan includes construction of bridges, road widening, installation of crash barriers and other works on national highways across various districts of the state. The Minister said that on the directions of Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, he recently met Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari and discussed important issues related to the state. He said that presently the state has around 1,200 kilometres of roads under the national highway network and requested to enhance central assistance for their maintenance and improvement of roads and other related works. He said that while the state had submitted an Annual Plan of Rs. 2,600 crore for the financial year 2023-24, it had received only Rs. 269 crore, which was insufficient. However, for the financial year 2024-25, the state government proposed a plan worth Rs.3,667 crore, which has now been approved by the Centre in June. Vikramaditya Singh said that he had also raised the issue of constructing a tunnel beneath Jalori Jot in Kullu district, under National Highway-305. The Central Government has given in-principle approval and sanctioned Rs. 1,452 crore for this tunnel. He said that the construction of this tunnel would not only boost tourism in the area but also benefit lakhs of residents in the region. He further added that due to repeated landslides near Brauni Nala on National Highway-5, the road has suffered serious damage. To address this, the Centre has approved Rs.135 crore for the construction of a bridge at this location. Apart from this, the Central Government has sanctioned Rs.1,385 crore for the four-laning of the Kala Amb-Paonta Sahib-Dehradun road. It includes land acquisition and pre-construction activities. The PWD Minister expressed his gratitude to Union Minister Nitin Gadkari and the Central Government for approving significant funds for the state. He said he was hoping for strong coordination between the Centre and the State to continue in the future. He said that the state government, with the Centre's support, was committed to ensuring balanced and inclusive development in all regions of the state. The Minister said that during his Delhi visit, he also met Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and raised the issue of the proposed Bhubu Jot tunnel and road connecting Mandi and Kullu districts. He requested that the road leading to the tunnel be declared strategically important as a defence route. He said that the state was hopeful of a positive outcome on this vital road project in the near future. Once completed, the road would reduce the distance between Pathankot and Kullu by 40 to 50 kilometres, which would boost tourism and also benefit residents as well as the Indian Army. (ANI)

Firebrand BJP MLA Raja Singh quits party, protesting nomination of Ramachander Rao as Telangana BJP chief
Bharatiya Janata Party lawmaker from Goshamahal assembly constituency in Hyderabad, T Raja Singh, on Monday resigned from the primary membership of the party, in protest against the possible selection of senior leader and former MLC N Ramachander Rao as the Telangana state BJP president. He asked Reddy to write to assembly speaker G Prasad Kumar asking the latter to disqualify him as an MLA. Earlier, Ramachander Rao filed his nomination for the post, following the directions from the BJP national leadership. A senior party leader familiar with the development said Union home minister Amit Shah, who toured Telangana on Sunday, conveyed the party's approval for Ramachander Rao's name to state leaders. The party's election committee is set to formally announce the appointment officially on Tuesday. Speaking to reporters after submitting his resignation letter to Kishan Reddy, Raja Singh expressed anguish over being prevented from filing a nomination for the state president's post. 'I wanted to file my nomination at an auspicious time and obtained the signatures of three of the state council members. I still required the signatures of seven others, as per the rules,' he said. He, however, said he was denied entry into the party office. 'Some senior leaders threatened the party members with suspension from the party if they backed my nomination. Since I could not get enough members in my support, I could not file the nomination,' he said. Raja Singh recalled facing numerous challenges since 2014 and said he remained on a hit list of terrorists. He alleged that some senior leaders within the BJP do not want the party to come to power in Telangana, and therefore are obstructing committed leaders like him. He made it clear that he could no longer continue in the BJP. 'I bow to you, and to your party — farewell,' he said. In his letter to Kishan Reddy, the MLA said the decision to nominate Ramachander Rao as the state BJP president had come as a shock and disappointment to lakhs of party leaders and cadre. 'At a time when the BJP stands at the threshold of forming its first government in Telangana, such a choice raises serious doubts about the direction we are heading,' he said. He said it was unfortunate that some individuals, driven by personal interests, had misled the central leadership and taken decisions by running the show from behind the curtain. 'This not only undermines the sacrifices of grassroots workers but risks pushing the party into avoidable setbacks,' he said. Known for his hardline Hindutva stand, rabble-rousing speeches and provocative comments, Raja Singh, a three-time MLA from Goshamahal constituency, was suspended from the BJP in August 2022 for his comments that hurt the sentiments of the Muslims. The MLA was arrested by the police under Preventive Detention Act and was sent to judicial custody on August 25, 2022. He was released from jail on November 9, 2022. The BJP central leadership revoked his suspension on October 22, 2023 and gave the party ticket to contest the November 2023 assembly elections and he won the seat. Reacting to Singh's allegations, senior BJP leader and Union minister of state for home Bandi Sanjay said there was nothing wrong in Raja Singh aspiring to be the party president in Telangana. 'But as a disciplined soldier of the party, he should accept the choice of the party's national leadership. He cannot violate the party line,' Sanjay said. MADHAV TO BE THE BJP STATE PRESIDENT IN AP Meanwhile, former legislative council member (MLC) P V N Madhav has been chosen as the BJP state unit president of Andhra Pradesh. He filed his nomination papers on Monday, as per the directions of the high command. Madhav will be replacing former Union minister and Rajahmundry member of Parliament Daggubati Purandeshwari, who took over as the BJP state president on July 24, 2023.
