Outdoor fires warning after Minsterley wildfire

BBC News2 days ago
The public has been warned of the dangers of lighting fires outdoors during hot weather after one developed into a large wildfire that took emergency crews from five stations four hours to extinguish.Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service said it was called to land at Bromlow near Minsterley at 17:36 on Thursday and found an area 500m (1,640ft) by 200m (656ft) well alight. The fire service thanked local farmers for helping to damp it down afterwards.Station Manager Craig Jackson said: "The hot weather we have been having means the ground is particular dry and flammable so we would urge the public not to have bonfires or take BBQs into open spaces."
On Friday the fire service was called to a fire on a railway embankment in Shifnal and undergrowth fires in Telford and Prees Green.

Gordon and Tana Ramsay, Jack Whitehall and Roxy Horner shrug off the rain as they lead the stars at wet and windy Silverstone for the British Grand Prix

Even the the threat of constant rain couldn't keep celebrity fans away as Silverstone hosted the British Grand Prix on Sunday. Persistent heavy rain fell at the Northamptonshire venue ahead of the British Grand Prix as reigning Formula 1 champion Max Verstappen prepared to start on pole position, with title rivals Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris close behind. And stars including celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay, Jack Whitehall and his model partner Roxy Horner were in attendance as proceedings got underway. Ramsay, 58, was accompanied by wife Tana as they made their way onto the circuit - the home of British Grand Prix since 1948. The couple were hand-in-hand and apparently nonplussed by the miserable weather while mingling with fellow spectators ahead of the spectacle. Also in attendance, comedian Whitehall, 36, appeared to be in high spirits as he posed for photos alongside his glamorous girlfriend, who caught the eye in a pair of low-slung leather trousers.

British Grand Prix build-up after heavy rain at Silverstone

Update: Date: 13:59 BST Title: How many penalty points does Bearman have? Content: It's only his rookie season in Formula 1 but Oliver Bearman has gone second in the penalty points table after his practice punishment on Saturday. The 20-year-old is now has eight points on his licence for the 12-month period, four points away from a one-race ban. Two of Bearman's points, which were issued for a collision with Franco Colapinto during last year's Sao Paulo Grand Prix, will expire on 2 November. Update: Date: 13:55 BST Title: Who has grid penalties at Silverstone? Content: Kimi Antonelli already had a grid penalty in his hand luggage from Austria for his early collision with Max Verstappen, so following his seventh place in qualifying yesterday, the Mercedes rookie moves down to 10th spot. The big drop on Sunday goes to Oliver Bearman, who made it into Q3, finished the session in a fantastic eigth place but has to shift all the way to P18 because of a 10-place grid penalty - and four penalty points on his licence - for going too fast when red flags were shown in final practice (that's when he crashed in the pit lane). There's quite a lot of movement on the grid because of Antonelli and Bearman, but the main three to benefit are Fernando Alonso, Pierre Gasly and the Williams of Carlos Sainz, who are now P7, P8 and P9 respectively. Update: Date: 13:50 BST Title: Is it raining at Silverstone? Content: Lewis Hamilton walked into the paddock looking sharp as ever earlier on but even a seven-time world champion needs a giant umbrella when the weather turns nasty. It's been chucking it down at Silvertone this morning - one of the Sauber team had to dry out his socks using equipment from the garage - and the rain has continued throughout the feature races. Light showers and a gentle breeze are forecast for lights out at 3pm. Update: Date: 13:47 BST Title: Listen: British GP qualifying review Content: Dutch commentator Nelson Valkenburg joins Jennie Gow and Harry Benjamin on the podcast to review yesterday's qualifying at Silverstone. Have a listen as we go along this afternoon. This video can not be played Harry is joined by Jennie Gow and Nelson Valkemburg to look back at qualifying Update: Date: 13:45 BST Title: Race day: Silverstone Content: Lorraine McKennaBBC Sport Journalist Hello, folks. Summer has arrived in Britain, so it's coats on, hood up and brollies to hand, as the weather is looking pretty grim for today's British Grand Prix. At the moment, we're heading for another wet-dry race, so guessing what strategy teams will opt for is going to be a head-scratcher. Last year, Lewis Hamilton's memorable win - a record ninth on home turf - in similar conditions was achieved with a medium-intermediate-soft combination of tyres. Lights out is at 15:00 BST. Did we get a home driver on pole position yesterday? Sadly, no. The Dutch and the Aussie contingent booked out the front row, with Max Verstappen putting in a sublime final lap in Q3 to pinch pole away from the McLaren of Oscar Piastri.

Live England vs India, second Test day five: heavy showers postpone start

Latest updates Rob Bagchi live updates. Nick Hoult Chief Cricket Correspondent. Will Macpherson Cricket News Correspondent. Scyld Berry Chief Cricket Writer. Tim Wigmore Deputy Cricket Correspondent, at Edgbaston 06 July 2025 11:42am 11:41AM Some rain delay reading John 'Fingers' Fingleton, picturesque MCC stalwart who waged war on declining standards at Lord's John Fingleton, who has died aged 76, was a stockbroker, public relations consultant and charity auctioneer – but through being photographed frequently, he was best known as the perceived personification of a Marylebone Cricket Club member. A sizeable man who wore a carnation and, sometimes, sported a bushy beard, he was dressed unsparingly in the vivid egg-and-bacon colours of the most famous of sporting institutions. 'Fingers' belonged to 14 clubs and would also dress in their colours. As he occupied a prime seat in front of the Long Room in the Lord's pavilion, he would frequently be to the fore on television when the players were coming on and off the field. He was a member of MCC for 57 years, often jousting with the committee over the running of the club. He deplored any declining standards in dress, behaviour, seating and food. 11:34AM Problematic puddles The sky is now as bright as it's been all day. In fact, I can see a bit of blue up there. The covers are being peeled back, but there's big puddles that will need blotting. There's more rain forecast between 12 and 1, so I suspect we won't see any cricket until about 1.30pm. But let's see. 11:31AM It has stopped raining But no start time yet. And there won't be for some time. India will start losing overs at noon. If we say 14 an hour, say if they start at 2pm they would have 70 overs though, as Will says, bad light might then come into it though they could, in theory, play until 7.30pm. 11:24AM Rain continues to fall But nothing like it was earlier and the SuperSoppas are sweeping the covers. Mark Butcher reports that the outfield is very wet and the ground staff pessimistic about getting play started quickly once it stops. But the forecast for the afternoon is fair. My friend was drenched en route to the ground and is taking refuge in a cafe in Canon Hill Park, planning to hunker down for at least an hour. 11:08AM Mopping up underway – brighter later It's a bit lighter now, and there's a vague mop-up going on while the rain still falls. There was a funny moment yesterday where Harry Brook asked Shubman Gill if he'd seen the forecast. This rain is obviously bad news for India, but tactically it might mean that they don't get much of a look at a second new ball. It's 64 overs away, so they would probably get a few overs with it, but not many. 11:03AM Seems to have stopped raining The supersoppa is on the outfield behind Paul Newman, Cameron Ponsonby, Mark Butcher and Michael Atherton who are enjoying a roundtable on Sky with untouched croissants as props. Serious rain now and the big covers coming on.. so a delayed start on the cards. — PRAKASH WAKANKAR (@pakwakankar) July 6, 2025 10:53AM Two-session day? Already huge puddles on the outfield. Small lakes. If the apps are right we will probably lose the morning session here. ☔️ — Sky Sports Cricket (@SkyCricket) July 6, 2025 10:48AM It's black over Bill's mother's The rain has arrived! It's absolutely pelting down. 10:44AM My memory of the Eden Park 2013 rearguard is Monty Panesar almost run out in the final over going for a quick single…But actually what stands out is the fact that after the game Andy Flower would not let the media talk to Matt Prior after his heroic blocking. The media officer at the time whisked Prior into a side room so we could talk to him without the paranoid head coach noticing. It was a sign the Flower regime did not have long to go. To be fair to Andy, the pressure was getting to him after the KP texting affair and he now admits he made some mistakes in how he handled that and the fall out. He's a good man, and an excellent coach. The England job gets to everyone eventually.
