Imran Khan vs Asim Munir: How former cricket all-rounder is throwing bouncers at Pakistan Army Chief even from jail

Time of India07-07-2025
Pakistan's political landscape is sharply divided between Field Marshal
Asim Munir
, the army chief wielding extensive influence across parliament, judiciary, and diplomacy, and
Imran Khan
, the former prime minister currently incarcerated in Rawalpindi's
Adiala Jail
, who remains the country's most powerful political figure. Despite imprisonment, Khan commands significant support from grassroots activists, the diaspora, and a robust digital network keeping his message alive.
While Field Marshal Munir may currently hold the reins of power, Imran Khan continues to shape Pakistan's political future from behind bars.
Imran Khan calls for nationwide protests amid rising tensions
This week, Khan called for nationwide agitation following the 10th of Muharram, aiming to revive mass mobilisation at a time when Munir's institutional authority is at its peak. The call comes amid widespread public frustration over inflation, repression, and perceptions that the political system has been engineered to sideline the electorate's will.
Munir's diplomatic efforts and US engagement
Two weeks ago, Munir held a discreet meeting with then-US President
Donald Trump
at the White House, diplomatic sources confirmed. According to insiders, discussions focused on Khan's fate and Pakistan's internal stability, especially in light of pressure from the overseas Pakistani diaspora.
Supreme Court ruling shifts parliamentary power balance
Shortly after, the Supreme Court awarded
Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf
's (PTI) reserved seats to the ruling coalition of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), granting it a two-thirds supermajority in parliament. Critics have described this legal ruling as effectively nullifying the popular mandate from the February 2024 general elections. A senior legal analyst described the development as 'political elimination through judicial procedure' and added, 'The system was rewritten to fit the result.'
Live Events
PTI's political campaign shifts abroad
While Munir continues diplomatic visits to Washington, Riyadh, and Beijing as Pakistan's stabilising envoy, PTI's political activities have moved abroad. The party's campaign is now led by an extensive online volunteer network based in the UK, North America, and the Gulf. A PTI organiser in Birmingham said, 'You can erase a party from parliament, but not from memory. We've made the diaspora the movement's backbone.'
The PTI sustains its message of injustice, censorship, and a stolen mandate through platforms such as YouTube, Telegram, and X, forming a digital frontline that challenges state control.
Munir's international stature contrasted with domestic volatility
Despite Munir's growing global stature through high-profile diplomatic engagements, experts caution that this may mask underlying instability. History shows that past military rulers of Pakistan, including Ayub Khan, Zia-ul-Haq, and Pervez Musharraf, enjoyed international legitimacy at their peak but were eventually undone by domestic dissent.
With Khan's call for post-Muharram protests and increasing economic hardship fueling political discontent, Munir's control over the state may soon face significant challenges. Analysts warn that what appears as consolidation could unravel if public anger exceeds the system's ability to manage it.
Political power concentrated between Munir and Khan
The civilian government led by Prime Minister
Shehbaz Sharif
lacks real authority, leaving the principal contest between Munir, who has unrivalled institutional control, and Khan, whose public support remains unbroken despite imprisonment.

1984 anti-Sikh riots: CFSL couldn't decipher 40-yr-old illegible FIR in Kanpur, UP tells SC

New Delhi: The Uttar Pradesh government informed the Supreme Court (SC) on Friday that the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) has been unable to decipher the contents of an over 40-year-old illegible FIR linked to the Kanpur 1984 anti-Sikh riots case. The Uttar Pradesh government informed the Supreme Court (SC) on Friday that the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) has been unable to decipher the contents of an over 40-year-old illegible FIR linked to the Kanpur 1984 anti-Sikh riots case. A bench comprising justices Surya Kant and Joymalya Bagchi took note of the affidavit filed by the state government and directed the investigating agencies to bring the matter back before the court once they are able to obtain a decipherable copy of the FIR. The court observed that if an expert body like the CFSL could not decode the FIR, no further action could be taken. However, it added that if the agencies were able to procure a clear copy of the document, the court would issue further directions. In its order, the bench noted that the CFSL report revealed the FIR in question was highly fragmented, with only two Hindi words partially legible. 'Except for these two words, the rest of the content is indecipherable,' the report stated. The bench added: 'No effective action in furtherance of the FIR can be taken at this stage. However, as and when the agencies are able to obtain a material copy, the matter shall be brought to the notice of this court without delay.' This FIR is part of a set of nine FIRs being investigated by the special investigation team (SIT), which has been revisiting the cases after 35 years. These cases were initially closed due to a lack of evidence. The Supreme Court was hearing a plea to reopen investigations into the killings of around 130 Sikhs in Kanpur during the 1984 anti-Sikh riots. Previously, the court had directed for the expedited trial of 11 cases related to the riots, in which chargesheets were filed following the reinvestigation of the cases. On Friday, the court was also informed that the Allahabad high court had stayed proceedings in several of these cases, causing delays in the trial process and denying timely justice to the victims' families after more than three decades. The bench expressed concern over the high court's decision to stay proceedings in three of the 11 cases, noting that the trials had begun only after chargesheets were filed by the SIT. 'While we do not wish to impact the right of a suspect or accused to avail their remedy, including quashing of the chargesheet, we request that the high court may take up these matters out of turn for adjudication in accordance with the law,' the bench said. The court emphasised that the 1984 tragedy occurred four decades ago and it was only through the Supreme Court's repeated interventions that the investigations were revived. The bench further pointed out that as time passed, securing key witnesses had become increasingly difficult. Ruchira Goel, standing counsel for the Uttar Pradesh government, informed the court that in four criminal appeals against acquittals in the Allahabad High Court, the delay in proceedings had been condoned. The appeals are now being actively pursued by the advocate general's office. The SC urged the Uttar Pradesh government to assign experienced criminal law officers to assist the high court in the pending criminal appeals. 'We wish to impress upon the advocate general to deploy the best state law officers for this purpose,' the bench stated. The state counsel was directed to ensure the high court receives a copy of the Supreme Court's order, and the matter was adjourned until September 15.

President Murmu stated, 'On the occasion of Kargil Vijay Diwas, I pay my heartfelt tribute to the brave soldiers who sacrificed their lives for the motherland. This day symbolizes the extraordinary valor, courage, and steadfast determination of our jawans. Their dedication and supreme sacrifice for the nation will forever inspire its citizens. Jai Hind! Jai Bharat!' Kargil Vijay Diwas, celebrated every year on July 26th, honours India's hard-earned triumph in the Kargil War of 1999. The conflict started in May 1999 when Pakistani troops, disguised as militants, covertly occupied key high-altitude positions in the Kargil region of India. To regain control, the Indian Army initiated 'Operation Vijay', a challenging mission to recapture these perilous mountain heights under harsh weather conditions. After nearly two months of intense fighting, India successfully pushed out the infiltrators and announced victory on July 26, 1999, though the victory came with the sacrifice of 527 courageous soldiers. This day serves as a solemn remembrance of their valor and sacrifice, reinforcing the nation's unity, highlighting the Indian Armed Forces' tactical skill and endurance, and inspiring patriotism as a strong emblem of India's determination to protect its borders. As India observes Kargil Vijay Diwas with profound respect and patriotic pride, marking the 26th anniversary of the 1999 victory, various ceremonies and events across the nation will honour the sacrifices made during the Kargil War. At the forefront, the main ceremony will be held at the Kargil War Memorial in Dras, Ladakh. Senior officials alongside the families of martyrs will lay wreaths in tribute. Simultaneous commemorations will take place nationwide, paying homage to the brave soldiers. Special events will recognise and honour the families of the those who laid down their lives. Patriotic programmes, including cultural performances and songs, are planned to inspire the spirit of nationalism. Additionally, schools and colleges will engage students through quizzes, speeches, and other educational activities to ensure the younger generation understands the significance of the war and the sacrifices involved. The Indian Army will unveil several new initiatives to deepen public engagement. These include the launch of an 'e-shradhanjali' portal, enabling people to pay their respects online, and a QR code-based audio app that narrates gripping stories from the battlefields. Furthermore, the Indus Viewpoint in Batalik will open to offer visitors a direct view of the Line of Control, providing insight into the strategic terrain.
