Minority quota hike only after fresh housing targets by govt
Housing and minority welfare minister BZ Zameer Ahmed Khan defended the govt's move and reiterated that the cabinet decision was based on central govt directives.
"The state has no role to play in this quota hike," Khan said. "The central govt directed us to implement the 2006 Sachar Committee report which recommended a 15% housing quota for minorities. The chief secretary received written communication from the Centre in 2019, followed by directions from the National Minority Commission in 2021 when BJP was at the helm."
Khan said the hike in quota can only be implemented when fresh targets are fixed for the housing department. "At present, Siddaramaiah has given us the green signal to complete ongoing work pending from 2013," he said. "The fresh quota is only prospective."
Housing department officials say the 15% quota will not be "added" but will be "offset" from one district to another. "Say, for example, only 3% of the quota is filled in Chikkaballapur, then the remaining 7% from Chikkaballapur will be shifted to Bidar, where there is a demand for 15% from minorities," said an official.

Emphasising this, chief minister Siddaramaiah said: "In many panchayats, the population of minorities is less than 10%. To ensure optimal use of targets, we have allowed the gap from these panchayats to be used elsewhere, subject to the 15% cap in the unreserved section."
Meanwhile, Khan said the total expenditure for ongoing work is about Rs 9,500 crore under various housing schemes and hinted that the quota hike will not be implemented anytime soon due to a paucity of funds.
Appeasement, says BJP
BJP Friday continued to target the govt over its decision to increase reservation in housing for minorities from 10% to 15%, calling it "minority appeasement" and pandering to its core vote bank of the Muslim community.
While criticising the decision, former chief minister BS Yediyurappa Friday, said: "We are not against minorities, but supporting them beyond a point is unpardonable. The govt is supposed to help Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes.
Instead, it is creating confusion like Tughlaq darbar."
He challenged CM Siddaramaiah and his govt to show where, in part of the state, even a kilometre of road was built. He claimed infrastructure development has come to a standstill. "Irrigation projects have been stalled and there is no one to listen to people's concerns," he said.
Meanwhile, his son and party state president BY Vijayendra drew parallels between the state govt and the NDA govt under Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the Centre where "both Hindus and minorities alike are being served justice". He accused Siddaramaiah of practising "devise politics", saying: "The CM's conduct demeans the dignity of his post. People will give him a befitting reply." tnn

Accused in Gopal Khemka murder case gunned down in encounter in Patna
Patna: An accused linked to the murder of businessman Gopal Khemka was gunned down after an encounter in Bihar capital's Malsalami locality early Tuesday morning, officials said. The accused, identified as Vikas Kumar alias Raja, allegedly accompanied the shooter, Umesh Yadav, who was directly involved in Khemka's murder on Friday night. Bihar's Special Task Force (STF) and Malsalami police conducted the raid based on information extracted from Umesh during interrogation. Earlier, police had arrested Umesh, identified as the main shooter in the case. Preliminary investigations have revealed that Vikas was involved in illegal arms trading in the Malsalami area and had sold the weapon to Umesh that was used in the murder of Khemka. According to an official, the police team reached Vikas's house around 2.45 a.m. on Tuesday, where he opened fire on the joint team. The officials of Bihar STF and Malsalami police retaliated. After a brief gunfight, the accused was neutralised. 'So far, we have detained two individuals and arrested the main shooter in the Gopal Khemka case. Our investigation indicates that an individual had taken a contract of Rs 10 lakh to kill Khemka and subcontracted it to Umesh for Rs 1 lakh,' a senior police officer said, adding that further details will be shared as the investigation progresses. Businessman Gopal Khemka was shot dead in Patna on Friday night, triggering shock and concern among the business community and raising questions about the law and order situation in the state capital. The high-profile murder case put the Nitish Kumar government in a spot at a time when the ruling coalition of JD(U) and BJP is prepping for the Assembly polls. The Opposition, the RJD and Congress targeted the state government over Bihar's law and order situation. The Chief Minister met top officials after the shocking murder and asked them to complete the probe into the businessman's murder at the earliest.

Mumbai: After Jharkhand BJP MP Nishikant Dubey stirred a fresh political row on Monday, saying people in Maharashtra were surviving on their money and those targeting non-Marathi speakers in the state would be thrashed badly again and again, the BJP in Maharashtra and the ruling Mahayuti alliance distanced themselves from the remarks. Ashish Shelar (Hindustan Times) Cultural affairs minister and Mumbai BJP chief Ashish Shelar said that nobody should question the contribution and achievements of the Marathi manoos in the country. While replying to the long duration debate in the assembly, Shelar said he did not want to name the Jharkhand MP as he had not given notice, although he wanted to clear the stand of the state government, the Mahayuti and the BJP. 'The MP should not raise questions over the performance of the Marathi manoos. The contribution of Maharashtra in the national GDP is highest in the country,' Shelar said. Mashelkar committee report to be tabled Shiv Sena leader and Marathi language minister Uday Samant on Monday said the government would table the Mashelkar committee report on implementation of the three-language formula under the National Education Policy, 2020. Samant, while speaking in the legislative assembly, reiterated that the government had tried to make Hindi compulsory, but introduce it as a third language in schools. The Maharashtra Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government led by Uddhav Thackeray had accepted Masheklar committee's report, which has a paragraph recommending Hindi be made mandatory alongside Marathi and English from class 1 to 12, on February 22, 2022, Samant said. 'The then CM had clearly tweeted on his social media account that the report would be implemented,' he said.
