UH's NSM Career Center is redefining STEM talent pipelines — and Houston industry is taking notice

In an era where the demand for STEM professionals is outpacing supply, Houston-based companies—particularly those in energy, healthcare, technology, and aerospace — are facing a strategic imperative: how to attract, retain, and develop the next generation of scientific and technical talent. Amid this challenge, the University of Houston's College of Natural Sciences & Mathematics (NSM) has introduced a bold solution that is already drawing attention from employers across the region.
The NSM Career Center is not just another campus career office. It is a first-of-its-kind, student-driven talent development engine, designed in collaboration with industry leaders and tailored specifically to the evolving needs of candidates. This innovative model is transforming how corporations engage with early-career STEM talent by focusing not only on recruitment, but also on long-term workforce development and brand alignment.
A modern pipeline for STEM Talent — rooted in Houston
With more than 6,000 undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in its programs—and over 2,000 studying computer science alone, NSM stands out as one of the largest and highest quality STEM talent pools in Texas. The college offers rigorous, industry-relevant training across many areas including:
Computer science, cybersecurity, AI and machine learning
Data science and analytics, finance, and actuarial science
Geology, geophysics, environmental sciences, atmospheric sciences, hydrocarbon exploration
R&D, carbon sequestration, chemistry, biology, biochemistry, gene fusion and immunotherapy
Physics, medical imaging, superconductivity, nanotechnology and materials science
By combining technical rigor with practical skills and professional development, NSM is producing job-ready graduates who are both capable and agile—traits increasingly critical in today's complex, multidisciplinary work environments.

More than recruitment: A strategic talent partnership
Rather than rely solely on traditional career fairs and job boards, the NSM Career Center adopts a consultative, co-creative model designed to deliver meaningful outcomes for employers. Each corporate partner is paired with a dedicated student director, who is a trained undergraduate leader who works in close coordination with NSM's award-winning faculty and staff to deliver customized engagement plans that amplify employer brand visibility and maximize applicant yield. 'Opportunities can be arranged to interact directly with students and faculty to discuss the technical and social skill sets needed for success in the workforce', says Donna Pattison, Ph.D., associate dean of curriculum, instruction, and career development.
These partnerships can include custom career events such as employer-hosted Tech Talks, resume reviews, and industry-led 'Escape Room' info sessions, targeted promotional campaigns across student networks and social platforms, resume books filtered by skillset and class year tailored to employer needs. Organizations can offer business challenges allowing companies to present real-world problems to student teams in exchange for fresh, data-driven solutions and have an inside look at potential hires in action. For companies with complex challenges, tight innovation cycles, or a desire to evaluate potential candidates before making a hire, these projects offer a compelling ROI.
For employers, this model creates a deeper and more authentic presence on campus. Instead of one-off interactions, companies become embedded within the NSM ecosystem, gaining access not only to top students but also to the unique insights, energy, and creativity that student-led initiatives can offer.
Corporate partnership tiers: Flexible, impactful, and scalable
Whether you're exploring early engagement or seeking a robust, long-term collaboration, NSM offers flexible partnership tiers designed to meet a range of strategic goals. Benefits include premium career fair booth placement, customized outreach via the HireNSM platform, priority scheduling for events like hack-a-thons, mentorship days, and internship bootcamps, Co-branded marketing, early access to project teams and invitations to talent showcases.
Corporate partners are provided strategic advising from the NSM Career Center's leadership to align campus engagement with corporate workforce objectives. These partnerships are not just about immediate hires—they're about building long-term pipelines and embedding your brand into the educational journey of high-caliber STEM talent.

Microsoft exec offers horrifying advice to laid off employees

Microsoft (MSFT) made an announcement last week that's become hauntingly familiar news in recent months: it's decided to conduct yet another round of layoffs. On June 2, the Redmond-based tech company said it will lay off less than 4% of its global workforce, which adds up to about 9,000 of its employees. Don't miss the move: Subscribe to TheStreet's free daily newsletter Microsoft has done multiple rounds of layoffs this year as it scales up its AI plans, leaving many wondering if they'll be next on the chopping block. It's a scary time to be in tech, as Meta, Amazon, and Google have also announced layoffs this year. All these companies have also been building their AI investments, with Meta committing to spend $65 billion in 2025, Amazon committing $100 billion, and Google committing to $75 billion. Related: Microsoft sends a brutal message to loyal employees Add into this that the news is crammed with threats of AI eliminating jobs, and it's naturally creating a lot of anxiety for those who have been laid off and need to look for a new role. People often wax philosophical on LinkedIn about layoffs, whether they were affected by them or simply want to comment on what they mean for the affected industry. But when a key Microsoft executive decided to do so in a recent post, he hit a nerve with comments that seemed tone-deaf to the newly unemployed. In a now-deleted LinkedIn post screencapped by BlueSky user and Necrosoft Games Creative Director Brandon Sheffield, Executive Producer at Xbox Game Studios Publishing Matt Turnbull shared some thoughts on what he believed those affected by the recent Microsoft layoffs should do. More Layoffs: Disney makes a devastating layoffs announcementFedEx layoffs signal a concerning business trendMeta quietly plans rude awakening for employees after layoffs "These are really challenging times, and if you're navigating a layoff or even quietly preparing for one, you're not alone, and you don't have to go it alone," Turnbull wrote. "I know these types of tools engender strong feelings in people, but I'd be remiss in not trying to offer the best advice I can under the circumstances," he continued. "I've been experimenting with ways to use LLM AI tools (like ChatGPT or Copilot) to help reduce the emotional and cognitive load that comes with job loss." Related: Microsoft joins Facebook and Google in upsetting practice Turnbull goes on to recommend a few prompts those affected by layoffs can use, including career planning prompts, resume help, how to draft a post to foster networking, and even how to ask an LLM for help with imposter syndrome. In his own post where he shared the screencap, Sheffield said, "Something I've realized over time is people in general lack the ability to think in a broader scope and include context and eventualities. But after thousands of people get laid off from your company, maybe don't suggest they turn to the thing you're trying to replace them with for solace." While the June jobs report looked positive at a glance, with the unemployment rate falling to 4.1% and 147,000 nonfarm jobs added per the Bureau of Labor Statistics, a deeper look reveals other troubles. Unemployment duration increased from 21.8 to 23 weeks, signifying a longer struggle to find work, and the percentage of people unemployed for 27 weeks or more rose to 23.3%. More stories are also emerging about the use of AI in both hiring and applying. Jobseekers have begun to report experiencing job interviews with AI instead of with human beings, with many finding the process clinical and disappointing. To fight back against what seems like an impossible job market, many applicants are also using AI to mass apply to jobs, leaving recruiters overwhelmed and unable to cope. Meanwhile, a recent ResumeBuilder survey also found that 66% of managers now turn to AI chatbots such as ChatGPT when making decisions about layoffs. In addition, 78% turn to it for decisions on raises, while 77% use it for deciding on promotions. How 9 Figure Media Is Redefining Modern Marketing and Branding in 2025

In 2025, the world of marketing and branding moves at a relentless pace, driven by digital platforms, shifting consumer behaviours, and an insatiable demand for authenticity. Amid this whirlwind, 9-Figure Media, a California-based digital PR agency, has carved out a distinct space, reshaping how brands connect with audiences. Known equally as a lifestyle PR agency, the firm blends strategic storytelling with data-driven precision, offering a fresh approach to an industry often criticised for its formulaic tactics. Let's explore how they are setting new benchmarks, drawing on their unique use of press releases, client-centric strategies, and a commitment to measurable outcomes. The role of a digital PR agency has evolved significantly since the early days of social media marketing. No longer just about securing media placements, these agencies now orchestrate complex campaigns that span platforms, formats, and audience segments. 9 Figure Media stands out in this crowded field, emphasising authenticity over polished perfection. For instance, their campaign for organic skincare brand Pureance saw a 47% increase in organic website traffic within three months, driven by targeted publications on Elle Canada and CosmopolitanME. 9-Figure Media's strategic PR efforts helped us secure top-tier media coverage and position Pureance as a trusted brand, significantly boosting our recognition and sales.' – Founder, Pureance What makes them different? It's their refusal to rely on one-size-fits-all solutions. Instead, they tailor campaigns to reflect a brand's unique voice. 'We don't just pitch stories; we build narratives that resonate,' says the CMO, whose background in journalism and marketing informs the agency's editorial approach. This philosophy has attracted clients ranging from tech startups to luxury wellness brands, all seeking a digital PR agency that can deliver both visibility and credibility. Yet, the success of this digital PR agency isn't without challenges. Some industry insiders question whether their hyper-customized strategies can scale for all corporations. From all indications, client testimonials say 'yes! As a lifestyle PR agency, 9FigureMedia excels at crafting campaigns that feel personal, even intimate. Whether promoting a boutique fitness brand or a plant-based food startup, the agency taps into cultural trends with precision. Their campaign for a certain wellness app, for example, used press releases to highlight user testimonials, resulting in a 40% spike in app downloads in Q1 alone. Their process is methodical yet creative. Here's how they approach lifestyle branding: Audience Research : Using tools like Nielsen and proprietary analytics, they identify niche audience segments. : Using tools like Nielsen and proprietary analytics, they identify niche audience segments. Story Development : They craft narratives that align with cultural moments, like the rise of 'quiet luxury' in 2025. : They craft narratives that align with cultural moments, like the rise of 'quiet luxury' in 2025. Multichannel Execution : Social media and experiential events work in tandem to amplify impact. : Social media and experiential events work in tandem to amplify impact. Measurement: They track metrics like engagement rates and conversion lift, ensuring campaigns deliver ROI. This structured yet flexible approach has earned them accolades. They have been named a 'Top Lifestyle PR Agency to Watch,' citing their ability to 'blend heart and hustle.' The press release remains a cornerstone of 9 Figure Media's strategy, even as some question its relevance in a digital-first world. Far from outdated, it has evolved into a dynamic tool for storytelling and SEO. According to a 2024 study by Cision, 68% of journalists still rely on press releases for story ideas, and 9 Figure Media capitalises on this. Their press releases are anything but boilerplate. Each is crafted with a journalist's eye, prioritising clarity and newsworthiness. 'We treat every press release like a mini-article ,' Dan explains. 'It has to inform, not just promote.' However, the agency's strategic use of press releases and immersive storytelling isn't without critique. Some argue it diverts resources from newer formats like video content. Still, this digital PR agency's results of securing over 1,400 media placements for clients in 2024 suggest their approach resonates. One of 9 Figure Media's core strengths as a digital PR agency is the ability to merge creativity with analytics. This balance is even more critical now that every brand needs to justify every penny spent. The agency uses tools like Google Analytics, HubSpot, and custom dashboards to track campaign performance in real time. Data alone doesn't tell the story, so their creative team of journalists and content creators ensures campaigns feel human. For instance, in their work for Gia Borghini, a luxury footwear brand, they paired storytelling with a targeted media campaign on Forbes, sparking a viral website visit and collaboration with high-value partners. 'Working with 9-Figure Media was a game-changer for our brand. Their expertise landed us a Forbes feature that skyrocketed our credibility and opened doors to new partnerships. My vision is now celebrated industry-wide, and our brand stands stronger than ever in the luxury space,' says Barbara Borghini This dual focus has its tensions. Some clients prioritize metrics over storytelling, while others want bold, risky campaigns that don't always guarantee ROI. Navigating these demands requires finesse, and 9-Figure Media does not stumble. 'It's not just about numbers,' says creative director Kheengs. 'It's about making people feel something.' As a lifestyle PR agency, 9FigureMedia doesn't just shape brands; they influence cultural conversations. Their campaigns often reflect not just business but broader societal shifts, from sustainability to mental health awareness. A 2024 PR Trust Barometer report found that 81% of consumers expect brands to take a stand on social issues, and 9FigureMedia's clients are positioned to meet this demand. Yet, this influence comes with responsibility. A 2024 press release for a fashion client touting 'ethical production' was scrutinised when supply chain issues surfaced. 9-Figure Media responded by advising the client to pause the campaign, a decision that preserved credibility but underscored the tightrope they walk. As 2025 unfolds, 9 Figure Media faces new hurdles. The digital PR agency landscape is fiercely competitive, with top PR firms investing heavily in AI-driven PR tools. Can 9FigureMedia's human-centric model keep up? Dan is optimistic but pragmatic. 'Technology is a tool, not a replacement for insight,' he says. Still, the agency has begun experimenting with AI for audience segmentation, a shift that could redefine its workflows. Meanwhile, as a lifestyle PR agency, they must stay ahead of cultural trends. In 2025, with Gen Z driving 40% of consumer spending (per a McKinsey report), they're doubling down on platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and Tumblr. Their press releases now often include multimedia embeds, catering to journalists' demand for rich video content. To date, 9 Figure Media's impact is undeniable. Their ability to blend strategy, storytelling, and data has made them a go-to digital PR agency and lifestyle PR agency for brands seeking relevance in a noisy world. TIME BUSINESS NEWS
