‘It's felt like home': Tarryn Aiken agrees to new deal with Roosters

Reigning Golden Boot winner Tarryn Aiken has re-signed with the Roosters until the end of the 2027 season in a huge boost for the NRLW heavyweights just a month out from the start of their premiership defence.
Aiken has developed into one of the game's elite playmakers for her club, state and country, with the champion playmaker enjoying unprecedented success in 2024 when she won the NRLW title, the State of Origin series with Queensland and the Pacific Championships with Australia.
She capped off her dream year with the Golden Boot award and is set for more success after agreeing to a new deal with the Roosters who are one of the teams tipped to go all the way in 2025.
'I'm incredibly proud to extend my time with the Sydney Roosters,' she said.
'I absolutely love this club and this team; it's felt like home since day one. The culture, the people, and the way we push each other to be better every day – it's really special and I'm excited about what the future holds.'
John Strange led the Blues to Origin glory over Aiken's Maroons this year, but he's glad he gets to work with her again as the pair chase more success.
'Tarryn is an exceptional talent and a genuine competitor,' he said, with the Roosters to begin their NRLW campaign against the Warriors on July 6.
'She brings professionalism, leadership and a winning mindset to everything she does. We're thrilled to have her recommit to the club, and we're confident she will remain a driving force in our future success.'

Australian rugby league legend Sam Backo dies aged 64

Queensland rugby league legend Sam Backo has died aged 64. The Maroons and Australian Kangaroos champion passed away surrounded by family at Cairns Hospital on Sunday. Backo had been in intensive care for some time, having been diagnosed with melioidosis in April. Melioidosis is a bacterial infection commonly found in soil and water in tropical and subtropical regions, and has killed 35 people in Queensland alone so far this year. The former Broncos and Raiders front-rower, who also had a stint with Leeds in England, had been transferred to a hospital in Brisbane for a period before later returning to Cairns. The man affectionately known as Slammin' Sam spent most of his NRL career in Canberra, where he played 114 games between 1983 and 1988, before adding another 20 when he moved to Brisbane in 1989. Backo played 18 games for Leeds in the 1988-1989 UK season, inbetween NRL campaigns. He was without doubt one of rugby league's toughest ever players, but was also renowned as one of the sport's great characters. Backo suited up in seven State of Origin games for Queensland and played six Tests for Australia. Most notable in his international career was his series against England in 1988 when he scored a try in all three games. Backo suffered a heart attack in 2023, after which he was in a critical condition, but survived. He was a proud Indigenous man who was also known for his work in Indigenous health.

Ashes war of words erupts as Broad hits back at Warner's swipe

There's nearly four months until the first Ashes Test in Perth, but the war of words is already well underway. Ex-England bowler Stuart Broad has hit back at comments from former Australian rival David Warner, who took a gentle dig at superstar batter Joe Root ahead of the marquee series. Speaking to BBC Sport, Warner suggested that Root, the second-leading run-scorer in Test history, was susceptible to LBW dismissals, warning that Australian quick Josh Hazlewood will be targeting his front pad during this summer's Ashes campaign. Root averages 51.09 in Tests, but that figure slips to 31.40 when facing Hazlewood. 'The big anchor there is Rooty, who is yet to score a hundred in Australia,' Warner said. 'Hazlewood tends to have his number quite a lot. He will have to take the surfboard off his front leg.' 11 – Pat Cummins (AUS) 11 – Jasprit Bumrah (IND) 10 – Josh Hazlewood (AUS) 9 – Ravindra Jadeja (IND) Root has cracked 15 Test hundreds since the start of 2022, averaging 64.64 in the game's longest format during that period. However, the right-hander has struggled on previous Ashes tours to Australia, scoring 892 runs at 35.68 with no centuries across 15 matches. The Yorkshireman has been toppled by Hazlewood ten times in the Test arena – but as pointed out by Broad, only three of those dismissals were LBW, the most recent of which occurred way back in 2019. 'I've never heard England's best ever batters front pad called a surfboard,' Broad tweeted. 'Just for clarity. Hazlewood has got Rooty LBW in Test cricket three times. Three.' I’ve never heard England’s best ever batters front pad called a Surfboard 😂😂 Just for clarity. Hazelwood has got Rooty LBW in Test Cricket 3 times. Three. — Stuart Broad (@StuartBroad8) August 2, 2025 Since the start of 2013, no cricketer has been dismissed LBW in the Test arena more often than Root with 51, accounting for 19.39 per cent of his wickets, which is noticeably higher than teammates Ben Stokes (12.69), Ollie Pope (15.84) and Zak Crawley (14.29). Warner, who will represent the London Spirit in the upcoming Hundred tournament, and Broad enjoyed an entertaining Ashes rival, with the Englishman removing the Australian opener on 17 occasions. Most LBW dismissals in Tests since 2013 51 – Joe Root (ENG) 36 – Virat Kohli (IND) 33 – Steve Smith (AUS) 31 – Kraigg Brathwaite (WI) 30 – Jonny Bairstow (ENG)
