Mali kills 80 militants after al-Qaeda-linked raids escalate

The Malian Armed Forces (FA Ma) responded to coordinated attacks on military targets in seven cities on 1 July 2025.
The targeted areas were Nioro du Sahel, Diboli, Kayes, Sandere, Gogoui, Molodo, and Niono.
As a result, the attack affected Nioro, Kayes, Sandere and Gogui, deeply alarming residents and local officials.
Near the governor's residence, Kayes residents reported heavy gunfire and smoke.
The attacks occurred near the borders with Mauritania and Senegal, raising concerns about regional security.
The al-Qaeda-affiliated Jama'at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM) claimed responsibility for the attacks.
Moreover, JNIM declared that it had acquired numerous army installations, including three barracks.
According to reports from Al Jazeera, quoting JNIM statements, the group described the operation as 'coordinated and high-quality.' The assault marks the third major JNIM attack in the past month.
In addition, the militants had earlier killed 30 troops in central Mali and attacked the airport in Timbuktu.
Mali's army declared the death of 80 rebels during counteroffensive operations.
Insurgents suffered casualties in every combat zone, according to Army spokeswoman Souleymane Dembele.
Weapons, motorcycles, and vehicles used in the attacks were among the confiscated items.
Images of dead insurgents were broadcast on national television by the military.
Official figures for the number of Malian soldiers' fatalities remained unreleased as of 2 July.
For over ten years, Mali has struggled with Islamist insurgencies, including branches of ISIL and al-Qaeda.
The country's continued military rule following the 2020 coup hinders international cooperation. In May 2025, the US Africa Command issued a warning about the growth of militants along West Africa's coastline.
Furthermore, General Michael Langley emphasised the increasing risks of weapon trafficking and smuggling in the Sahel region.
As a result, the attacks highlight growing insecurity in Mali and its neighbouring countries.

A suspected July 2021 unrest instigator believes she's being targeted for being Zuma fan

JOHANNESBURG - One of the suspected instigators of the July 2021 unrest believes she is being targeted for being a fan of former president Jacob Zuma. Bogadi Maphisa, along with four co-accused, appeared at the Roodepoort Magistrates Court on Wednesday. The group stands accused of conspiracy to incite public violence. Maphisa showed up to court on Wednesday in full uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party regalia – an organisation led and founded by Zuma. It was Zuma's incarceration in 2021 that led to the deadly unrest in parts of KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng. Maphisa said that while she was angry at Zuma's imprisonment, she didn't participate in any criminal activity. 'Maybe my sin is that I am a fan of my president, Jacob Gedleyihlekisa Zuma, and I will let him go at any given moment. I know that I do not have a case. I am not guilty of anything, so they can go as far as they want to go. My conscience is clear - I didn't incite anybody to go and do anything.' The matter returns to court on 29 July for full disclosure of the charge sheet.

Sassa payments delayed due to review process

Several Pietermaritzburg residents were unable to collect their South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) grants on Wednesday due to a review process targeting beneficiaries suspected of having undisclosed income. According to an article published by The Witness, Sassa said payments have not been suspended, but reviews are being conducted to ensure that only eligible individuals receive grants. When The Witness visited payout points yesterday, some beneficiaries said they were advised to wait before checking their accounts. 'I have received my payout as my details are correct. We are shocked that there are people among us who are dishonest and getting extra money, while we are in need,' said one beneficiary, who asked not to be named. Lower Northdale Ward Councillor Rooksana Ahmed sent out a notice informing beneficiaries that they should check again with their respective banks the following day, due to the review. In a statement, Sassa said it is reviewing the eligibility of targeted beneficiaries who may have other income sources not disclosed at the time of their application. 'These targeted beneficiaries are expected to present themselves at a Sassa local office where their eligibility will be reviewed. Those who fail to comply may face suspension of their grants. Continued non-compliance may result in permanent cancellation,' the agency said. Sassa emphasised that beneficiaries are legally required to fully disclose all income sources during the application process and report any changes in financial circumstances thereafter. Sassa national spokesperson Paseka Letsatsi said failure to comply with these rules is a violation of the Social Assistance Act 13 of 2004 and may lead to corrective action. 'Sassa has undertaken a review of its database and processes to root out fraud and ensure grants go to eligible recipients. Reviews are focused on those active in the labour market, especially where income exceeds the means threshold and was not declared,' said Letsatsi. He added that no grants have been suspended at this stage. 'Only the payment schedule has been amended for those asked to undergo the review.' Letsatsi said Sassa is concerned that many clients do not update their contact details, which causes missed notifications. A second payment date has been issued for those under review, but if no contact is made within two months, the grant will be suspended. Beneficiaries will then have one month to respond before the grant is permanently cancelled. A fraud investigation may follow. Sassa urged all beneficiaries to declare any additional income or bank accounts and to replace green ID books with smart ID cards due to the risk of fraud.
