Rivian Offers Massive Lease Discount, Making The R1S More Affordable

Rivian EVs are expensive. But Rivian is trying to make them more affordable with hefty discounts.
The R1S SUV is now the Irvine, Calif.-based EV manufacturer's best selling model. It's outselling the R1T pickup by about 2 to 1, according to Cox Automotive's Electric Vehicle Sales Report Q1 2025. And Rivian is now promoting the 2025 Dual Motor Rivian R1 vehicle with the tagline 'your down payment's on us, so you can start exploring.'
'Rivian will contribute $6,500 toward each lease of a new 2025 Dual Motor Rivian R1 vehicle with Max battery and Performance Upgrade ordered through R1 Shop between May 1, 2025 and May 31, 2025,' according to the Rivian website. Other vehicle configurations are excluded, Rivan says.
Here's what makes the deal potentially very sweet. The $6,500 lease offer 'may be combined with the $7,500 EV Lease Credit,' according to Rivian. That would add up to a tidy $14,000 discount. I confirmed this lease pricing with a Rivian salesperson.
Note that Rivians won't always be out of the reach for more price sensitive buyers. The upcoming Rivian R2 SUV is expected to have a starting price of approximately $45,000 before taxes and fees. That is due in 2026.

Image source:Last week during a cabinet meeting, President Trump threatened a 50% tariff on copper imports, a move that could make it harder for carmakers and suppliers that already face slim margins due to tariffs. The U.S. already has 50% tariffs on imported aluminum and steel, increasing manufacturing costs for automakers in the process. Analysts have estimated that those tariffs could add $1,000 or more to the cost of each vehicle. Car makers have been relying on their stockpiles to serve customers without raising prices, but inventories are being exhausted. U.S. copper prices rose to a record of $5.682 a pound or $12,526 per metric ton. Meanwhile, the same metal is trading for $9,600 on the British exchange. The price of delivery has also tripled to 60 cents a pound since President Trump's inauguration. According to estimates from Cox Automotive and Benchmark Mineral Intelligence, carmakers are already paying an average of $1,700 in tariffs for every car they import. With copper tariffs in place, tariffs could add as much as $5,700 for every car imported from places other than Canada and Mexico. The president hasn't officially set a date for when the tariffs will take effect. Auto sales have climbed sharply in recent months, as consumers were motivated by the incentives and the need to buy vehicles before any tariff-related price increases. But Bank of America is now saying that the growth it saw in consumer vehicle loan applications has declined from its peak in April, "suggesting that 'buying ahead' has largely run its course." Bank of America expects lower-income and younger buyers to feel the most pain, as its data shows that median car payments have grown faster than new and used car prices since 2019. Shockingly, of those households with a monthly car payment, 20% have a payment over $1,000. In addition to capping your car payments at about 15% of your monthly take-home, financial experts also recommend shoppers aim for a 20% down payment, a 36- to 48-month loan term, and expenses (including insurance) at between 8% and 10% of your gross monthly income. Experts also recommend that you know your credit score and loan approval amount in advance and that you shop around with different lenders for the best rate. Rivian taps Google to bring custom maps into its EVs and app
For 18 months, Rivian and Google engineers worked together. Today, they're showing off their work. Rivian is pushing out a software update that will bring a unique version of Google Maps into its EVs. It's the latest step in Rivian's continued effort to distinguish its vehicles with software — an effort that has helped it strike up a joint venture with one of the world's biggest automakers, Volkswagen. This isn't a typical the Google Maps integration and it's unlike the tech company's other collaborations in the automotive sector. For years, Google has pushed into automotive through its smartphone projection app called Android Auto as well as Google built-in, an Android Automotive operating system that integrates Google services directly into the vehicle and is used by automakers like Volvo. The collaboration with Rivian is neither. Instead, Rivian customers who use the in-car navigation will no longer see the Mapbox-based maps. Now, they'll see Google Maps, but with a lot of Rivian DNA sprinkled on top, including its trip planner, user interface and design, and EV charger locations, according to Rivian's chief of software Wassym Bensaid. 'We obviously closely watch customer feedback, and I think one of the areas where we had some level of criticism was navigation,' Bensaid said. The company could have tried to incrementally improve its existing in-car navigation. Instead, it started working with Google to launch a new product. Rivian's challenge: it didn't just want the default Google Maps application. 'Google really wanted to embrace a new model of collaboration with a more open integration down to the API levels for Google Maps, and that required working with a tech partner on that journey to integrate both solutions, and I think we're really super happy with the result of this collaboration,' he said. The new maps feature will include estimated time of arrival, traffic updates, place information, and satellite imagery from Google Maps, all of which is integrated into Rivian's navigation system. The in-car navigation will also include tappable points of interest. Carrying over Rivian's trip planner is crucial as it showcases EV range estimates and charging stop selection, all powered by A Better Routeplanner. Other Rivian features like its 'range on arrival,' charging stops and preferences, and the EV maker's charging score, which gives a rating for individual charging sites based on plug-in data from Rivian vehicles, have also been folded into the Google Maps. The new Google-based maps will start to roll out today via a software update in Rivian vehicles and its mobile app. The updated Rivian mobile app will include additional trip planning features as well. Rivian said it added place photos, place descriptions and satellite view (with a Connect+ subscription), as well as the ability to see traffic and traffic incidents in the app. Users can also continue to share destinations and trips from the Rivian mobile app to their vehicle.
