Honywood School head had 'personal attacks' over skirt ban
Mr Saunders also highlighted concerns from some that the parents of Muslim children had influenced his decision to initially ban skirts. However, the school said the policy idea came from uniform issues, understood to be related to skirt length.
Mr Saunders compiled a lengthy report outlining some of the parental feedback he had received."Some parents express strong ideological backlash against the term 'gender neutral,' viewing it as 'forced upon our children' or linked to 'trans-gender activists' and 'LGBT+ being pushed down [their] throat'," Mr Saunders wrote.Others said it was "exhausting" having to fight for girls "to be seen as human and not sexual objects".One suggestion made by a parent was to introduce a "strike" system against pupils wearing inappropriate skirts.
'I am a human being'
The head teacher said the debate "exposed underlying tensions" within society."The uniform debate has become a battleground for broader societal discussions around gender roles, victim-blaming, and the interpretation of 'wokeness'," he added.Department for Education guidance stated that schools had the power to set uniform policies, and it encouraged them to have dress codes that promoted "good behaviour and discipline".Mr Saunders said any future uniform changes would be implemented with clear guidelines via a phased introduction from September 2026.Writing to parents about his report, Mr Saunders criticised "disrespectful" emails that had been addressed to him."Whilst I am the head teacher of Honywood School, I am also a parent and a fellow human being, and personal attacks achieve nothing," he said. "I have been asked what my personal values are, as if this drives how I lead the school."The school was contacted for further comment.

Peter Mandelson ‘called Jeffrey Epstein my best pal in birthday book message'
The UK's ambassador to Washington, Peter Mandelson, reportedly called Jeffrey Epstein 'my best pal' in a book of messages collated for the notorious paedophile's birthday. The Labour party grandee was reportedly included in a section titled 'friends', alongside current US President Donald Trump and former president Bill Clinton. A letter from Lord Mandelson included photographs of whisky and a tropical island, and called Epstein 'my best pal', according to the Wall Street Journal (WSJ). The leather-bound album was put together in 2003, before Epstein was first arrested in 2006. A spokesman for Mandelson declined to comment to the paper. Two years ago, Lord Mandelson said he 'very much regrets ever having been introduced to Epstein'. Earlier this year, he reacted with a foul-mouthed rant when pressed about his friendship with the disgraced financier. He also accused others of having an 'obsession' with his relationship with the convicted sex trafficker who died six years ago. He said: 'I regret ever meeting him or being introduced to him by his partner, Ghislaine Maxwell. I regret even more the hurt he caused to many young women.' He went on to add: 'I'm not going to go into this. It's an… obsession and frankly you can all f*** off. OK?' Maxwell is serving a 20-year jail sentence for recruiting and trafficking underage girls for Epstein. Mr Epstein was found dead in his prison cell in 2019, but the circumstances surrounding his death and his activities continue to make headlines. President Trump has faced anger from some of his Make America Great Again (MAGA) supporters over his campaign promise to release the FBI files on the Epstein case. Conspiracy theorists have long demanded the release of a so-called 'client list' of celebrities, politicians, and other prominent associates, that some claim Epstein blackmailed over their alleged involvement in his trafficking ring. Earlier this week, the WSJ reported that Trump had sent a 50th birthday greeting in 2003, which was described as including a sexually suggestive drawing and a reference to 'secrets' both men shared. Trump has denied penning the letter or drawing and has never been accused of wrongdoing in connection with the Epstein case. He is suing the WSJ, its parent company and owner Rupert Murdoch for $10 billion. The messages were put together into a professionally bound birthday book. According to the WSJ, Clinton handwrote a single paragraph in the album, which read: 'It's reassuring isn't it, to have lasted as long, across all the years of learning and knowing, adventures and [illegible word], and also to have your childlike curiosity, the drive to make a difference and the solace of friends.'

Stockton MP criticises approval of Byers Gill solar farm
An MP says he is "disappointed and angry" over a government decision to approve a large, £200m solar Matt Vickers, who represents Stockton West, has warned the Byers Gill Solar Farm near Darlington and Stockton will harm the local landscape."It will damage our rich tapestry of wildlife and biodiversity and could have a huge impact on our village communities and food security," Vickers government said it would reduce bills and provide energy security, while developer RWE said the facility would be removed at the end of its estimated 40-year lifespan. Vickers previously spoke against the solar farm during a House of Commons debate in 2024, as large swathes of nearby greenbelt land have been obtained by developers for solar to the Local Democracy Reporting Service, the 180MW farm would be made up of several blocks of development located in Brafferton, Hauxley Farm, Byers Gill Wood, Great Stainton and two near said the development will cover about 490 hectares (1,211 acres) of land in total. Speaking after the government's decision to approved the plans, Vickers said: "Labour is so obsessed with net-zero and solar farms that they're happy to bulldoze through the views of local residents to push ahead with it."He claimed Labour "couldn't give a damn about the views of local people".But the energy consumers minister Miatta Fahnbulleh said: "Families in the North East have seen their energy bills go through the roof as a result of our exposure to volatile gas prices. "The only way to make British people better off in the long term is by securing clean, homegrown power that we control." Follow BBC Tees on X, Facebook, Nextdoor and Instagram.

Far-left campaign group headed up Jeremy Corbyn and Zarah Sultana urged people to join Palestine Action - days after it was banned under terror laws
Jeremy Corbyn and Zarah Sultana head up a group which was inciting people to join Palestine Action after it had been proscribed. Progressive International - a far left campaign group - was urging supporters (via its website) to 'take on US complicity with the Israeli war machine' by joining Palestine Action for several days after it had been banned in Britain under terror legislation. This revelation comes one day after the pair launched a new far-left political party which will focus on defending 'the right to protest against genocide' and ending 'all arms sales to Israel '. The former Labour leader also received thousands of pounds worth of donations from Progressive International to pay for multiple costly trips abroad including to Brasil, the United States and Columbia. Shortly after The Daily Mail contacted Progressive International for comment on July 9, references to Palestine Action were deleted from its website. But last night [25.07.2025] the organisation was still promoting a jointly made Progressive International, Palestine Action map of Elbit factories as part of Palestine Action's direct action #ShutElbitDown campaign. The Linkedin post also included a link to the now-deleted Palestine Action website. Palestine Action was proscribed by the Government on July 5 after protesters associated with the group broke into Britain's largest airbase and vandalized two RAF Voyager aircrafts. Expressing support for or being a member of the group is a crime under terrorism legislation and can lead to up to 14 years in prison. But for almost five days after its proscription, the Progressive International website was still encouraging people to join Palestine Action. Under a heading titled 'Palestine Action' it read: 'Palestine Action is a direct action group founded to take on Elbit systems. 'In its first year of operation, Palestine Action caused over £15 million in losses to Elbit sites alone and shut down the operation for 105 days.' Palestine Action alleges that Elbit Systems UK is involved in the manufacture and supply of weapons to the Israeli military - a claim the company strongly denies. Until July 10, the page also featured a map highlighting the locations of dozens of Elbit factories alongside the caption 'Elbit systems target map. 'Global targets for the campaign to #ShutElbitDown. 'Follow Palestine Action.' The so-called target map also linked directly to Palestine Action's 'The Underground Manual' which instructed supporters how to form 'cells', 'pick targets' and commit criminal damage. Both Jeremy Corbyn and Zarah Sultana are members of the Progressive International Council meaning they are responsible for setting its 'strategic direction', according to the website. Progressive International also paid to fly Jeremy Corbyn and in some cases his wife on a series of lavish and exotic trips. In October 2022 the campaign group took the politician and his wife to Brazil for a five-day trip costing £3,680.00, according to his Registered Financial Interests. They also took the former Labour leader to Washington in January 2023 to attend Congressional meetings and advocate for 'press freedom and the case of Julian Assange' - a trip worth £1,452.00. In May 2022 the organisation also flew Mr Corbyn to Bogota, Columbia - covering costs of £1,667.70. In response to the allegations that they were illegally expressing support for a banned group after it had been proscribed, a spokesperson for The Progressive International explained that the web pages referencing Palestine Action were published in December 2023 - pre-dating the ban. [MUST KEEP] They added: 'The Progressive International is proud to organise in defence of international law and the inalienable rights of all peoples. 'The Progressive International opposes the authoritarian constriction of the right to protest, in the United Kingdom and across the world.' Jeremy Corbyn, Zarah Sultana and the Metropolitan police have been contacted for comment.
