WBSSC scam: Job losing staff's protest march to state secretariat today

A section of the non-teaching staff in Group-C and Group-D categories in state-run schools of West Bengal, who have lost their jobs following a Supreme Court order in April this year, will be conducting a "march to the state secretariat" on Tuesday afternoon. This section of the non-teaching staff, united under the banner of "Group-C & Group-D Adhikar Mancha (Group-C & Group-D Rights Forum)", will conduct a rally to press a four-point demand from the state government in resolving the ongoing impasse. The forum has calculated that of the total non-teaching jobs cancelled following the Supreme Court order in April this year, a total of 3,395 were "untainted" and hence should be reinstated, while the jobs of the identified "tainted" ones should be terminated immediately. Their second demand is the immediate publication of certified copies of the "untainted" non-teaching staff by the West Bengal School Service Commission (WBSSC). Their third demand is the immediate publication of all the optical mark recognition (OMR) recognition sheets used in the written examination for recruitment, so that it becomes clear who was "tainted". The fourth and final demand is that the state government should work out some alternatives for the time being but only for the "untainted" ones and excluding the "tainted" ones. The untainted staff will start assembling in front of Howrah Maidan Metro station in Kolkata-adjacent Howrah district from 11.30 a.m. on Tuesday onwards and thereafter march toward the state secretariat, Nabanna located at Mandirtala, also in Howrah district. Initially, they decided to conduct the rally on July 3. However, being denied police permission to conduct the rally on that day, they finalised Tuesday as the date for the protest programme. "We had several rounds of meetings with WBSSC on the matter. However, the latter was unable to come out with any specific solution. So ultimately we were forced to give this protest call," said a representative for the forum. Meanwhile, security arrangements in and around Nabanna have been tightened over this protest march. A three-tier security system has already been raised around the state secretariat. All the roads connecting to Nabanna have been blocked with barricades.

Mahayuti, BJP disown Jharkhand MP remarks on Marathi manoos

Mumbai: After Jharkhand BJP MP Nishikant Dubey stirred a fresh political row on Monday, saying people in Maharashtra were surviving on their money and those targeting non-Marathi speakers in the state would be thrashed badly again and again, the BJP in Maharashtra and the ruling Mahayuti alliance distanced themselves from the remarks. Ashish Shelar (Hindustan Times) Cultural affairs minister and Mumbai BJP chief Ashish Shelar said that nobody should question the contribution and achievements of the Marathi manoos in the country. While replying to the long duration debate in the assembly, Shelar said he did not want to name the Jharkhand MP as he had not given notice, although he wanted to clear the stand of the state government, the Mahayuti and the BJP. 'The MP should not raise questions over the performance of the Marathi manoos. The contribution of Maharashtra in the national GDP is highest in the country,' Shelar said. The first film in India was produced by a Marathi person and the first army in Indian history was established by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, he said. 'We should not be questioned about our contribution….Nobody should say that Maharashtra is surviving on their money,' Shelar said in the assembly. His party and the state government would safeguard Marathi pride and ensure that non-Marathi people living in the state were not disrespected. Mashelkar committee report to be tabled Shiv Sena leader and Marathi language minister Uday Samant on Monday said the government would table the Mashelkar committee report on implementation of the three-language formula under the National Education Policy, 2020. Samant, while speaking in the legislative assembly, reiterated that the government had tried to make Hindi compulsory, but introduce it as a third language in schools. The Maharashtra Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government led by Uddhav Thackeray had accepted Masheklar committee's report, which has a paragraph recommending Hindi be made mandatory alongside Marathi and English from class 1 to 12, on February 22, 2022, Samant said. 'The then CM had clearly tweeted on his social media account that the report would be implemented,' he said. The Mashelkar committee report would be tabled in the house and copies of the report would be made available to all MLAs, he added.

LU plans political museum, new dedicated space for pol science dept, exam building

Lucknow University is set to receive a new political museum. It will be constructed on the first floor of the building housing Human Resource and Development Centre (HRDC), shared vice-chancellor prof Alok Kumar Rai. The construction of an examination building will help in re-structuring various departments at Lucknow University (HT Photo) 'The museum will include photos, busts or both of leading political thinkers. A showcase with the photos and busts where writings of the political leaders will be displayed is also planned. We will also include write-ups on political leaders in the showcase,' said Rai. He said that along with the museum, the political science department will also be shifted on the first and second floor of the building housing HRDC. At present, political science classes are held in the rooms shared with the Hindi department. The shifting of the departments will provide proper space to both Hindi and political science departments. 'This shift is made possible due to the construction of a new examination building near the Cameroon Road. The area for the examination building was cleared after two residences formerly constructed for faculty members which were lying deserted for a long time due to their dilapidated state were razed,' said Rai. Currently, evaluation of examination copies is done in six buildings - one housing HRDC, in the buildings housing SBI bank and UCO bank, in the buildings housing Jyotirvigyan department, ONGC and in some portions of Arts Quadrangle. 'The new building will enable us to provide appropriate space for various departments through re-shuffling and have one specified hub for examination purposes. The new evaluation building will be centrally air conditioned with proper seating space for over 200 people on each floor. The building will have ground plus four floors in all. It will also have a separate designated space for examination copies,' Rai added. He also said that they are also planning to bring UCO bank in the same building as SBI bank which will provide an appropriate space for banking.
