Bangladesh-Adani dues: Bangladesh pays $384 million to Adani Power, trims outstanding to $500 million

Bangladesh has paid $384 million to Adani Power this month, significantly reducing its outstanding dues under a 2017 power supply agreement with the Indian company, according to sources. As of June 27, Bangladesh has paid $384 million of the committed $437 million scheduled for the month. Sources said this amount clears the country's "admitted" dues till March 31, though "claimed" dues by Adani remain about $500 million—provided Bangladesh completes its June-end payment commitment, PTI reported. The payments come amid Dhaka's ongoing struggle to meet obligations under the 25-year power supply pact signed during the tenure of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The agreement had come under strain after rising import bills—exacerbated by the Russia-Ukraine war—and a severe dollar crunch triggered by months of political turmoil that led to Hasina's ouster in August 2024. In response to mounting unpaid bills, Adani Power halved electricity supply to Bangladesh in November 2024. Full supply from its 1,600 MW Godda plant in Jharkhand resumed in March 2025 after Bangladesh resumed monthly payments. With the latest tranche, Bangladesh has paid nearly $1.5 billion of the total $2 billion billed so far. Adani has reportedly agreed to waive late payment surcharges for January to June 2025, amounting to $20 million, contingent on timely future payments. However, differences remain between Adani's 'claimed' and Bangladesh's 'admitted' dues—primarily due to disagreements over coal costs and plant capacity calculations. A spokesperson for Adani Power confirmed the June payments but declined to comment on outstanding disputes, calling the discussions private. The 2017 deal has faced renewed scrutiny under Bangladesh's interim government led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus. The administration has initiated a review of several power purchase agreements, including Adani's, through a committee comprising energy and legal experts. Adani's contract involves supplying the entire output from its coal-based Godda plant to Bangladesh. Following payment defaults, Adani had reduced supply by half in late 2024 but resumed full exports after partial liability clearance, the report said. Bangladesh's financial crunch, driven by reduced forex reserves and growing import bills for energy, had resulted in widespread power outages last year. The country has since been repaying monthly dues and recently sought an additional $3 billion from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), atop an earlier $4.7 billion bailout package. Adani Power is among several Indian firms selling electricity to Bangladesh. Others include state-run NTPC and PTC India Ltd. The interim government has labelled several Hasina-era power deals 'opaque' and is in the process of evaluating their long-term financial and legal implications. 3 Lakh Visit Jagannath Temple In Digha For Rath Yatra Festival: ISKCON

Digha, West Bengal: An estimated three lakh devotees visited the new Jagannath temple in Digha on the day of Rath Yatra and the preceding day, a senior ISKCON monk said. International Society of Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) Vice-President Radharaman Das also told PTI that 70,000-1 lakh people are likely to visit the temple every day till the 'Ulto Rath' (return car festival) on July 4. ISKCON is entrusted with the job of performing the rituals and puja of the deities - Lord Jagannath, Lord Baladev and Devi Subhadra - in the Digha temple. "Altogether three lakh pilgrims visited the temple premises on the two days of Netrotsav (the day of the deities getting vision)," Das said on Saturday. Asked about the expected turnout of pilgrims in the coming week till 'Ulto Rath', he said, "We are anticipating 70,000-1 lakh devotees on an average every day." People are visiting the temple and their number has been steady every day despite intermittent rains, the monk said. All rituals are being performed before the deities now stationed at another temple, considered their aunt's place, which is around 750 metres from the main shrine, he said. Around 33 lakh people had visited the temple since its inauguration on April 30, Das said. A Digha Shankarpur Development Authority (DSDA) official said, "The seaside resort has also turned into a religious tourism hub in West Bengal. We expect the turnout to be higher by next year." West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee inaugurated the temple in Digha in April.

"Imposed by Central government," says Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut on three-language formula

Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], June 28 (ANI): Shiv Sena (Uddhav Thackeray) faction leader Sanjay Raut on Saturday stated that the decision to introduce Hindi as a third language in Maharashtra schools was not made by the state government, but was 'imposed' by the central government. Raut further stated that the new education policy, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, has encountered opposition from all states. Addressing a press conference, Raut said, 'This decision was imposed by the central government, not made by the state government. The new education policy is something Modi and Shah have given to the whole country, and all of our states stand against them.' Opposition parties continue to voice their objections against the Maharashtra government's plan to introduce Hindi as a third language in schools. The Maharashtra government has been criticised twice regarding its language policy. Initially, a government resolution issued on April 16 mandated Hindi as the compulsory third language in Marathi and English-medium schools. However, n response to the backlash, the government revised the policy through an amended resolution, stating, 'Hindi will be the third language. For those who want to learn another language, at least 20 willing students are required.' On June 24, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis stated that the final decision regarding the three-language formula will be taken only after discussions with litterateurs, language experts, political leaders, and all other concerned parties. A meeting on the issue of the three-language formula was held at the Chief Minister's official residence, Varsha, on Sunday night (June 22). Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, School Education Minister Dada Bhuse, Minister of State Dr Pankaj Bhoyar, and officials from the education department were present. Raut further accused the Centre of misusing law and order over the past decade and stated that the judiciary and the Election Commission have treated the Shiv Sena (UBT) and NCP-SCP unfairly. 'The law and order have been misused for the last 10 years. The judiciary, including the Supreme Court as well as the Election Commission, has done injustice to Shiv Sena (UBT) and NCP-SCP... Who is giving the verdicts under pressure... We need an unbiased investigation to get justice,' Raut said. (ANI)
