Federal ‘arrogance' could tilt support to Sabah parties, says analyst
PETALING JAYA : Voters in Sabah could be pushed towards supporting local parties because of the perceived intervention of Pakatan Harapan-Barisan Nasional's national leaders in the Sabah state elections, according to a political analyst.
Academy of Sciences Malaysia fellow Jayum Jawan said PH and BN were both perceived as 'outsiders' in the eyes of Sabah's voters.
He said the insistence of national party leaders in Kuala Lumpur to make the final call on the direction of their Sabah chapters would not augur well for the two coalitions, as BN and PH would seem to be arrogant and dismissive of local voices.
'Their insistence on taking the lead can be seen as an attempt to dominate local politics. This would not endear them to the local Sabahan voters,' he told FMT.
Jayum added that this kind of top-down decision-making will lose them the support of Sabahan voters.
'Viewed with suspicion'
Jayum Jawan.
He also said national leaders in PKR, DAP, and Amanah were being increasingly viewed with suspicion in Sabah, especially when they appear to be making decisions on behalf of Sabahans.
He added that some of the same politicians in Kuala Lumpur that were displaying arrogance were perceived as fueling racial and religious tensions back in West Malaysia.
'That doesn't sit well with Sabahans. Here, people live side by side. Christians, Muslims, animists; they don't want that harmony disrupted by outsiders.
'There is already deep resentment over the way Malayan leaders have handled the Malaysia Agreement 1963 and other state-level issues,' he said, adding that key issues involving the agreement remain unresolved and continue to stir emotions.
Yesterday, the unity government coalition secretariat announced that PH and BN have agreed to work together for the Sabah polls, following a meeting between their chairmen, Anwar Ibrahim and Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
While seat talks and possible negotiations with other parties would be handled by both the PH and BN leadership in Sabah, the secretariat said the final decision would be made by the national leadership.
GRS in good position, better off solo
Jayum said BN and PH could find they have made a costly miscalculation in leaving the ruling Gabungan Rakyat Sabah out of the equation.
Hajiji Noor.
He said GRS, led by Hajiji Noor and composed of eight Sabah-based parties, has developed strong appeal, even though it is relatively young, particularly because it was not tied to peninsula-based political agendas.
'GRS is in a good position right now,' he said. 'They can compete with other local parties like Warisan for Sabahan support without being seen as part of the peninsula's political game.'
He also believed that chief minister Hajiji's GRS would be better off contesting the state polls on its own. 'Local-based and Sabahan parties will be more acceptable to local voters. This is a strong pulling point and will give their rivals a run for their money.'
Hajiji had said GRS was ready to go solo in the state polls if PH and BN's decision to join forces was final. The chief minister said GRS consistently held that Sabah parties should lead the state government as they better understood the realities, cultures and needs of Sabahans.

Wan Ahmad Farid is Malaysia's new chief justice
Justice Wan Ahmad Farid Wan Salleh has also been elevated to the Federal Court to allow him to helm the highest office in the judiciary. (Wikipedia pic) PETALING JAYA : Justice Wan Ahmad Farid Wan Salleh has been appointed as Malaysia's new chief justice, taking over the post from Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat who retired earlier this month. In a statement, the office of the chief registrar said the Yang di-Pertuan Agong had also consented to Abu Bakar Jais's appointment as president of the Court of Appeal and Azizah Nawawi's appointment as Chief Judge of Sabah and Sarawak. They will be sworn in and presented their letters of appointment at Istana Negara on July 28. The statement said the Yang di-Pertuan Agong consented to the appointments on the advice of the prime minister and after consultation with the Conference of Rulers, which is in line with Article 122B of the Federal Constitution. Chief Judge of Malaya Hasnah Hashim is currently serving as acting chief justice following the retirement of Tengku Maimun, while Federal Court judge Zabariah Yusof is acting Court of Appeal president after Abang Iskandar Abang Hashim retired two weeks ago. Wan Ahmad Farid, a Court of Appeal judge, has also been elevated to the Federal Court to allow him to helm the highest office in the judiciary. He was appointed as a judicial commissioner in December 2015 before being elevated to the High Court in 2019 and then the Court of Appeal in November 2024. Wan Ahmad Farid served as the political secretary to former prime minister, the late Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, and was an Umno member. However, he quit politics in 2013. The 62-year-old had also served as a deputy home minister for just over a year, between 2008 and 2009, and was a senator from 2005-2009. In 2009, Wan Ahmad Farid was the Barisan Nasional candidate in the Kuala Terengganu parliamentary by-election but lost to PAS's Abdul Wahid Endut. Abu Bakar, 63, started his career in the Attorney-General's Chambers before going into private practice. He was appointed judicial commissioner in 2013 and elevated as High Court Judge three years later. Abu Bakar was promoted to the Court of Appeal in December 2019 and to the Federal Court in June 2023. Azizah is the first woman to be appointed Chief Judge of Sabah and Sarawak. She will replace Abdul Rahman Sebli, who is set to retire on July 24. Azizah has served at the Court of Appeal since August 2019. She was made judicial commissioner in November 2012 and elevated to the High Court in September 2014.

Umno division chiefs ask AG to drop appeal against Najib's house arrest bid
Some of the 145 Umno division chiefs who had gathered at a hotel in Kuala Lumpur tonight. KUALA LUMPUR : Umno division chiefs have called on Attorney-General Dusuki Mokhtar to drop his appeal against a Court of Appeal decision allowing former Umno president Najib Razak to initiate a judicial review related to a royal addendum allowing him to serve the remainder of his prison sentence under house arrest. The AG is appealing to set aside a majority 2-1 ruling on Jan 6 that allowed the former prime minister's application to adduce additional evidence and order the High Court to hear his judicial review. In a statement, they said that as the principal legal adviser to the government, the AG should 'uphold' the royal addendum and 'support justice'. The statement was issued on behalf of 160 Umno division chiefs, 145 of whom gathered at a hotel here tonight. They also proposed that all 191 Umno divisions nationwide that have yet to hold their conferences include a special motion on the addendum during their respective meetings. 'This motion is crucial as a show of party unity and solidarity in defending the institution of Malay rulers and upholding the principle of justice for all,' they said. The division chiefs also called on Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim to implement the addendum. The Federal Court was told last Wednesday that AG Dusuki Mokhtar had acknowledged the existence of the addendum but was disputing whether it was genuine or valid. Najib wants the government to implement the order, dated Jan 29 last year, allowing him to serve the remainder of his jail sentence in the SRC International case under house arrest. The former prime minister learnt about the addendum soon after the Federal Territories Pardons Board announced in early February last year that his 12-year jail term in connection with the SRC International case had been halved and his RM210 million fine reduced to RM50 million.
