Abang Johari: Sarawak charts own path in energy with statewide piped gas plan backed by Petros
BINTULU, July 23 — Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg has reaffirmed the Sarawak government's strong commitment to expanding piped gas infrastructure to every household in the state – a move aimed at enhancing energy accessibility and economic equity. Speaking to reporters after launching the piped natural gas supply to homes in Sungai Plan here today, Abang Johari said the initiative is part of a long-term master plan to ensure Sarawakians benefit directly from the state's own gas resources. 'This is just the beginning of our effort to supply gas to our people so they can enjoy the benefits of the gas extracted in our own backyard,' he said. He cited a successful pilot project in the Quadruplex Taman Ceria (QTC) housing area in Miri, where residents have seen savings of up to 40 per cent or around RM40 monthly after switching from gas cylinders to piped delivery. Determined to extend these benefits across Sarawak, the premier unveiled the Sarawak Gas Roadmap, which outlines a statewide piped gas distribution system. 'We are developing a network of gas distribution hubs throughout Sarawak in Bintulu, Kuching, Miri, and possibly Sibu from where piped gas can be channelled to surrounding areas, even reaching remote towns like Kapit,' he said. According to him, the concept of piped gas is not new to Sarawak, citing earlier systems in Lutong, Sarawak and Seria, Brunei, that predate the formation of Malaysia. Abang Johari emphasised that Sarawak's legal framework, particularly the Sarawak Gas Distribution Ordinance, remains intact and continues to empower the state to regulate and manage its own gas sector. Under this framework, Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (Petros) has been formally appointed the sole gas aggregator for Sarawak, with full authority to manage supply from upstream to end users. He expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim for endorsing this via a joint declaration between the federal and state governments, which enabled Petros to operate as the sole legal and operational aggregator. 'All companies involved in the gas business must comply with our existing laws. This is a people-centric project, and through the hub-and-spoke model, it will benefit not just urban dwellers but rural communities as well,' he said. The roadmap, he added, will offer tiered benefits across various user groups – residential homes, SMEs, and heavy industries such as methanol production – with rates based on consumption levels. 'The greatest impact will be on ordinary Sarawakians, especially B40 households and those with lower incomes, by easing their cost of living,' he said. Abang Johari also welcomed the federal government's latest cost-of-living measures announced today, including fuel price reductions and other incentives. 'PMX announced his support, and we too are helping our people. Thank you for the initiatives. It shows that the people of Sarawak benefit both from Kuala Lumpur and from Petra Jaya, Kuching,' he said. Also present at the event were deputy premiers Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas and Datuk Amar Prof Dr Sim Kui Hian, Petros chairman Tan Sri Datuk Amar Hamid Bugo and other state Cabinet ministers and their deputies. — The Borneo Post

RM100 cash aid and Rahmah sales boost ease cost of living
Malaysian Islamic Chamber of Commerce (DPIM) president Datuk Mohammad Sahar Mat Din - BERNAMAPIX PUTRAJAYA: The one-off RM100 cash assistance for every Malaysian aged 18 and above, along with the increased allocation for the Rahmah MADANI Sales, has been described as a timely and appropriate move to help the people cope with the rising cost of living. Malaysian Islamic Chamber of Commerce (DPIM) president Datuk Mohammad Sahar Mat Din said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's announcement reflects the government's targeted and comprehensive approach to addressing long-standing issues faced by the people. 'Overall, it is a very appropriate and timely move, especially the RM100 initiative under the Sumbangan Asas Rahmah (SARA) or basic Rahmah contribution initiative and the increased allocation for the Rahmah MADANI Sales,' he told Bernama. Meanwhile, the chairperson of the Bandar Tun Razak Single Mothers Association, Zaini Zakaria, described the RM100 assistance as proof of the government's concern for the low-income group and expressed support for the continuation of the initiative. However, the 66-year-old Zaini hopes the government will consider expanding the scope of purchases under SARA to include wet goods such as chicken, fish, and vegetables, which are also essential daily necessities. 'If we can buy wet goods, that would be good too. Sometimes the biggest kitchen expenses come from fresh produce, not just dry goods,' she said. Personal driver Nor Azreen Nabila Mohd Maliki, 30, also welcomed the government's decision to maintain toll rates and fuel prices, saying it provides much-needed relief for those who commute daily to work. Nor Azreen Nabila said fuel and toll costs are among her most burdensome fixed expenses. 'I really appreciate the government's move to postpone toll hikes and maintain fuel prices. My daily commute is long, so any savings on these costs really help,' she said. For Lee Wei Choon, 48, an engineer at a private company, the SARA assistance reflects the Malaysia MADANI concept, which emphasises unity among people of various races and religions. 'I feel touched because this is the first time we, the M40 group, have received direct benefits from the government. All this while, we felt that we were only taxpayers, but this time, in the spirit of National Day, I feel fortunate to be Malaysian. 'Moreover, I have many options of supermarkets and locations to use this assistance. The initiative announced by the Prime Minister will not only ease the cost of living but also make it easier for us to benefit from it,' said the father of two girls. The Prime Minister, in his announcement today, said the RM100 would be channelled via MyKad under the SARA programme, benefiting 22 million adult citizens with a total allocation of RM2 billion. He said the aid, in conjunction with National Day on Aug 31, is an immediate measure to ease the people's cost-of-living burden while appreciating their contributions to the country. At the same time, the allocation for the Rahmah MADANI Sales has been doubled to RM600 million this year, compared with RM300 million previously. - Bernama

New bill in the works to tackle homelessness, begging and urban poverty
KUALA LUMPUR: The Women, Family and Community Development Ministry is drafting a bill on homelessness, begging and urban poverty (gelandangan, pengemis dan kemiskinan bandar) to address these issues more effectively and systematically. Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri said the bill would include both rehabilitation and enforcement efforts, so that intervention initiatives to assist the homeless were well-structured and effectively targeted. These measures, she said, aimed to help individuals regain independence and lead better, more meaningful lives. The ministry also plans to amend the Destitute Persons Act 1977, following a comprehensive review. "The ministry has completed a review of the act, aimed at identifying outdated or irrelevant provisions that require amendments to better address issues related to homelessness, begging, and urban poverty. "The ministry is studying the findings in detail to ensure a more holistic framework that provides protection and support in all aspects from enforcement, rehabilitation and social integration," she said in reply to Datuk Mohd Isam Mohd Isa (BN-Tampin). Isam, in his supplementary question, had inquired about the findings of the comprehensive review of the Destitute Persons Act 1977 conducted by the ministry. Nancy also said the ministry, through the Social Welfare Department, had taken in close to 8,000 destitute persons between 2021 and May this year. She said 1,528 destitute persons had been taken in in 2021, followed by 1,280 in 2022, 2,080 in 2023 and 1,987 in 2024. "This year, up to May, we have taken in 987 destitute persons." She said out of the 8,000 destitute persons, Kuala Lumpur recorded the highest number with 1,742 taken in, followed by Penang (1,288) and Johor (1,199). "Based on age breakdowns, 515 destitute persons were under 18 years old, 5,068 were aged 18 to 59, and 2,018 were 60 years and above. The ages of the remainder were unconfirmed." She said under Subsection 3(1) of the Destitute Persons Act 1977, the welfare officers were empowered to take destitute persons into custody within 24 hours before bringing them before a magistrate. She added that the Social Welfare Department conducted such initiatives on an ad hoc basis in response to complaints, as well as through scheduled or periodic operations, either independently or jointly with other enforcement agencies such as the Health Ministry, the Immigration Department, the National Anti-Drugs Agency and local authorities.
