(Standing, from second left) Debbie, Salmah, Fatimah, Then and others gather for a group photo, taken after the launch of Attiya Spa's latest branch. SIBU (July 6): Minister for Women, Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development Dato Sri Fatimah Abdullah has lauded the 'Women of Strength' (WOS) initiative taken by Attiya Spa to empower women, especially those from the B40 (low-income) group. She regarded it as being line with the ministry's, and also Sarawak Women and Family Department (JWKS)'s intention of enabling women to generate income not just to provide for their families, but also for them to come out of poverty. Under the initiative, Attiya Spa provides free massage training programmes, with the participation targeted at underserved women, especially those in the rural areas. 'At the same time, this initiative enables women to be financially independent and live a life of dignity and respect. 'Often, when a corporate body starts a chain like this, they prioritise profits. 'But Attiya is leading by example giving focus and attention to those who are at disadvantage and the needy segment of our society. 'Their effort is in line with Sarawak government's intention of ensuring that the Sarawak people would have strength in economy, and that the vulnerable groups are always given attention and are never marginalised,' she said when officiating at the opening of Attiya Spa third branch here today. Established in 2019 in Kuching, Attiya Spa also has a branch in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah. The Muslim-friendly spa is rated five stars by the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (Motac). Adding on, Fatimah suggested for the spa to open branches in Miri and Bintulu. Meanwhile, Attiya Spa founder Dr May Then said the goal was to equip women with practical, income-generating skills, so as to create pathways to employment and support them in achieving financial independence. 'The WOS initiative is part of our commitment to social responsibility providing women, especially those from underserved backgrounds, with an opportunity to gain valuable experience and enter the wellness industry with confidence. 'Some participants may go on to join Attiya Spa as therapists, while others may use their new skills to pursue careers locally or abroad,' she said in her speech earlier. Among those present were JWKS director Salmah Jobeli, Motac Sarawak director Debbie Jenggut Nyelang and Sibu Labour Office industrial relations officer Hasimah Ahmad. Rosey Yunus: Human capital Key to Sarawak's sustainable future
(From right) Razak, Salina, Sarkawi, William (behind Sarkawi), and Japri visit one of the exhibition booths. MIRI (July 4): Investing in human capital is not a choice but a strategic necessity, said Sarawak Deputy Minister of Women, Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development Datuk Rosey Yunus. She said without quality human capital, even the infrastructure, investments, and economic policies would not yield optimal outcomes. Delivering her opening speech for the Sustainable Sarawak Seminar 2025 organised by Pustaka Negeri Sarawak yesterday, she said the state is currently in a crucial phase of transitioning from a resource-based economy to one driven by knowledge, technology, and innovation. Her speech was read by Political Secretary to the Sarawak Premier, Sarkawi Suhaili, who represented her at the event. Themed 'Human Capital as the Driver of Sarawak's Economic Sustainability', the seminar is in its third edition and held for the first time in Miri. 'I am confident that by strengthening human capital development ― especially among youth, women, the B40 group and rural communities ― we can not only reduce inequality, but also elevate Sarawak's economy to a more sustainable and inclusive level,' she said. Rosey explained that human capital development is not limited to the labour force, but includes all segments of society who are knowledgeable, skilled, ethical, and competitive ― individuals who can actively contribute to the state's development. 'We need more Sarawakians to have access to lifelong education, relevant skills training including TVET, and professional growth opportunities,' she said. She pointed out that the Sarawak government has prioritised human capital as one of the main pillars under the Post Covid-19 Development Strategy 2030 (PCDS 2030 to achieve high-income status by 2030. However, she added that success will require collaboration across multiple sectors, including educational institutions, training agencies, industries, civil society organisations, and grassroots communities. 'We must ensure every Sarawakian ― regardless of background ― has equal opportunity to contribute to the state's development. 'This is the true meaning of sustainable development: when economic growth goes hand-in-hand with empowering the people,' she said. Rosey expressed hope that the seminar would serve as a constructive platform to generate fresh ideas and foster strategic collaborations for a more sustainable and resilient Sarawak. The initiative, she noted, is part of Pustaka Negeri Sarawak's ongoing awareness and advocacy efforts on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), entrusted to the agency by the Premier. She said the seminar offers a valuable platform to reassess strategies, share best practices, and develop a more integrated approach to human capital development in Sarawak. Also speaking at the event was the Chief Executive Officer of the Pustaka Negeri Sarawak, Japri Bujang Masli. Among those present were Pustaka board member Datu William Patrick Nyigor, Deputy CEO (Services) Salina Zawawi, and Miri Regional Manager Razak Rambili. human capital investment lead Rosey Yunus

DID called to monitor coastal embankment in Kpg Bungai following house collapse from waves
Rosey inspects the collapsed house in Kampung Bungai during her working visit. MIRI (June 30): The Department of Irrigation and Drainage Malaysia (DID) was called to Kampung Bungai to monitor the coastal embankment area following the recent collapse of a house after it was hit by waves. Deputy Minister of Women, Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development Datuk Rosey Yunus said the urgency was due to the many houses there that were at risk. 'DID must monitor and take the necessary actions to protect the residents. A sea wall needs to be built, because one house has already collapsed here in Kampung Bungai. 'So, I don't want to just hear about tender (process). What I want to see is actual implementation,' she said during a working visit to the collapsed house site last Saturday. Meanwhile, she said the Miri Welfare Department had been informed to come and assess the needs of the victim, and that necessary assistance would be channelled to them through the department. Following the incident, the houseowner, fisherman Bihie Ismail, 72, is temporarily staying with his children who live nearby. The collapsed house was said to be part of the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security's Fishermen's Special Housing Project (New Construction) 2024 programme, and the implementing agency was the Malaysian Fisheries Development Authority.

Fatimah: Kids' Athletics programme builds healthy, confident future leaders
Fatimah (third left) presents a token of appreciation to a participant. MUKAH (June 22): The Kids' Athletics programme is not merely a sporting event but a meaningful initiative to nurture healthy, intelligent and grounded youths, said Sarawak Minister of Women, Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development, Dato Sri Fatimah Abdullah. She said the event, which was participated in by 25 primary schools across Mukah, Daro and Dalat, reflected the strong sporting spirit among the children. 'They are not only competing in a healthy manner but also building friendships, self-confidence and discipline — values that are essential in shaping future generations,' she said when officiating the Kids' Athletics 2025 Series 2.2 for Mukah Zone closing ceremony at the Mukah Stadium here yesterday. The Dalat assemblywoman said the programme provided a safe and fun platform for children to learn through experience, discover their potential and develop their talents. 'Activities such as Sprint Hurdles, Formula One, Cross Hopping, Overhead Backward Throwing, and Pole Long Jumping provide a balanced physical and mental challenge, requiring teamwork, strategy, and efficiency. 'I'm truly impressed by the holistic approach offered through Kids' Athletics, which integrates physical, spiritual, emotional, and social elements into an effective outdoor learning method. 'In this digital era, we must encourage our children to be more physically active so that they can excel not only academically, but also maintain physical and mental wellbeing,' she said. Fatimah said sports could be a catalyst for social change, contributing to the development of a healthier, more resilient, and united society, adding: 'We are not only developing athletes, but also future leaders who understand the meaning of competitiveness, teamwork, and perseverance.' She also called for stronger collaboration among ministries, the Education Department, sports associations, schools, and communities in advancing grassroots sports development in Sarawak. 'On behalf of the Sarawak government, I assure that support for programmes like this will continue to grow and be strengthened. I hope other zones will take the initiative to organise their own editions in the future,' she said. Fatimah expressed hope that such initiatives would spark greater interest in sports and help unearth athletic talent. 'Not everyone may be interested in sports, but some will, and perhaps one day, they may represent Sarawak – or even Malaysia – on the world stage,' she said. The programme was jointly organised by the Sarawak Athletics Association, Sarawak State Education Department, and Sarawak Sports Corporation. Also present were organising chairman Bong Soon Kee, Malaysian Athletics Federation vice president and Sarawak Athletics Association deputy president Lim Tze Yaw and treasurer Josephine Kang Teok Koon. fatimah abdullah Kids' Athletics programme lead Mukah

Community-led BSL programme helps SMK Dalat students pass SPM
Fatimah (back row, second left) takes a group photo with students who achieved excellent results in the 2024 SPM. Also seen are Mathew (left) and Magdaline (right). DALAT (June 22): The 'Bimbing Sampai Lulus' (BSL) programme at SMK Dalat has successfully helped all participating students obtain their Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) qualifications. Sarawak Minister of Women, Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development, Dato Sri Fatimah Abdullah said the programme — which began in 2021 at Kampung Medong — initially served to assist students who failed to obtain their SPM certificate, with a focus on Bahasa Melayu and History. 'The core objective of BSL is not just to boost passing rates; it is a reflection of a united community effort in educating our children. As the saying goes, it takes a village to raise a child. 'Education is no longer the sole responsibility of teachers — it is a shared commitment involving parents, community leaders, government agencies and the wider community,' said the Dalat assemblywoman during the 'Program Intervensi Bimbingan Khas Sekolah' (PIBKS) Appreciation Ceremony organised by the Dalat District Education Office (PPD) at Dewan Jerunai, SMK Dalat here yesterday. Fatimah said following the success of the pilot phase, the programme was expanded to other villages and continued to deliver positive results, with SMK Dalat again recording success in 2022. In 2023, the programme was introduced at SMK Oya and achieved outstanding outcomes, with all participating students obtaining their SPM certificates. 'In 2024, the BSL programme was further enhanced — in addition to Bahasa Melayu and History, Mathematics was added due to the need to address persistent underperformance in this subject. Early results show encouraging improvements.' She also commended SK Saint John for its implementation of PIBKS, which is a pilot remedial initiative carried out through collaboration between PPD Dalat, the school and the Kampung Medong community. She said as of January this year, four out of 12 students under the Bahasa Melayu remedial module successfully exited the programme, while 10 out of 20 students in the Mathematics module had shown similar progress. 'Remarkably, the teaching modules are guided by SPM school leavers and local community members under the supervision of special remedial teachers. This is a true example of effective grassroots collaboration,' she said. Fatimah added that with the active involvement of the district office, KMKK, parents, and local communities, Dalat is well-positioned to become a pioneer district in community-based education. 'This is no small achievement – it is living proof that when a community unites for education, extraordinary things can happen,' she said, expressing confidence that with continued commitment, creativity, and collaboration, Dalat could one day be known not only for its renowned 'balau' and sago products, but also as a hub for producing knowledgeable and well-educated human capital. Among those present were Dalat District Officer Mathew Hubert, PPD Dalat officer Magdaline Jon, and SMK Dalat principal Samsul Bohari. Bimbing Sampai Lulus BSL fatimah abdullah lead SMK Dalat SPM
