Gujarat Bridge Collapse Death Count Now 15, Rescue Teams Tackle 3-Metre Mud
The death count in the Gambhira bridge collapse in Gujarat's Vadodara district has climbed to 15, and three people are still missing. Disaster response teams are conducting the rescue operation and two more vehicles are likely in the river.
Sharing the updates about the rescue operation, District Collector Anil Dhameliya said, "The death count is now 15 and three people are missing." The Collector said two more vehicles are likely in the river. These likely include a car and a truck. "If you have any information about a missing person, share it with our control room so that it aids the rescue work," he said.
The Collector said deep mud, about three metres deep, is disrupting rescue work and a makeshift bridge is being prepared to aid rescue workers. Rescue workers are also battling heavy rain in the area.
Multiple vehicles, including trucks, fell into the Mahisagar river early yesterday after the 40-year-old Gambhira bridge connecting Vadodara and Anand districts gave way. As a stretch of the bridge collapsed, several vehicles passing through fell into the river.
With the bridge tragedy raising questions of administrative apathy, the Bhupendra Patel-led BJP government in Gujarat has ordered an investigation into the factors behind the incident. The probe team visited the site this morning. A team from the Gujarat Pollution Control Board also visited the spot because one of the tankers that fell into the river was carrying chemicals.
The Gambhira bridge, built in 1985, was a disaster waiting to happen. Local residents have said it shook dangerously when vehicles crossed it. Following a recommendation from local BJP MLA Chaitanyasinh Zala, the state government approved the construction of a new bridge. A survey was conducted and plans to build the new bridge were afoot. The Gambhira bridge was repaired and kept open to traffic.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi yesterday said the loss of lives in the Gujarat tragedy is "deeply saddening". "Condolences to those who have lost their loved ones. May the injured recover soon. An ex gratia of Rs. 2 lakh from PMNRF would be given to the next of kin of each deceased. The injured would be given Rs 50,000," the Prime Minister's Office said on X. The Gujarat Chief Minister has separately announced a compensation of Rs 4 lakh to the families of each person who died in the accident. "Additionally, each person injured in the accident will receive assistance of 50,000 rupees, and all treatment arrangements will also be provided by the state government," he said.
Targeting the state government over the incident, the Opposition Congress has said it reflects the "corruption and decay behind the Gujarat Model". "In this accident, several vehicles fell into the river, resulting in tragic deaths and injuries. The Congress family expresses deep condolences and prays for the speedy recovery of the injured," the Congress said in a social media post. The party also alleged "rampant corruption" in the state's infrastructure projects.

Gujarat MPs spent just 4.2% of local area development funds: Report
SLUG: IN OVER A YEAR Gandhinagar: Over a year since the 18th Lok Sabha was constituted, Members of Parliament (MPs) from Gujarat have utilised only 4.2% of their allocated local area development funds, raising serious questions about the pace of grassroots development work in the state. According to a report by Mahiti Adhikar Gujarat Pahel (MAGP)—an organisation working to promote transparency and accountability—no development work was completed in 14 out of 26 Lok Sabha constituencies of Gujarat since the new Lok Sabha came into existence in June 2024. You Can Also Check: Ahmedabad AQI | Weather in Ahmedabad | Bank Holidays in Ahmedabad | Public Holidays in Ahmedabad Under the MPLAD (Members of Parliament Local Area Development) scheme, each MP is allotted Rs 5 crore annually to support public welfare and infrastructure projects in their constituency. For Gujarat's 26 MPs, this amounts to a collective allocation of Rs 254.8 crore. However, by July 5, only Rs 10.72 crore had been spent. The Bharuch constituency recorded the highest utilisation at Rs 1.73 crore, followed by Patan with Rs 1.56 crore, and Sabarkantha with Rs 1.08 crore. In sharp contrast, zero spending was reported in key constituencies such as Ahmedabad East, Ahmedabad West, Banaskantha, Chhota Udepur, Gandhinagar, and Navsari. The MAGP report, citing data from the official MPLAD scheme portal, highlights the stark underutilisation of funds that could otherwise be used for critical projects including public health, education, sanitation, irrigation, flood control, energy, agriculture, and infrastructure such as roads and bridges. Pointers: Implementation in a year - Navsari constituency has the highest number of recommendations (297 works), followed by Mehsana constituency (271 works) and Kheda constituency (265 works). - Out of a total of 3,823 recommended works, only 93 works have been completed - No work was completed in 14 of the 26 Lok Sabha constituencies of the state Box: Lack of Transparency Pankti Jog of MAGP said that the MPLAD portal only provides details of the allocated budget, expenditure incurred, and the number of works. "Analysis of how much fund was used by which MP in which specific area or sector is not available on the portal," Jog said. She added that on the earlier portal, MPs themselves could see details like the number of works they recommended which started, how many received technical approval, and how many were rejected. These details are now not available on the portal, she added.

Syria Says Withdrawing Troops After Agreeing To Ceasefire In Sweida
Damascus: Syria announced it had begun withdrawing its army from Druze-majority Sweida city on Wednesday night after agreeing to a new ceasefire that it said would bring a complete halt to its military operations there. A previous truce announced on Tuesday appeared to have little effect on the ground in the southern region, where days of violence have left more than 300 dead, according to a monitor. According to the text of the new ceasefire agreement, published by the interior ministry, there will be a "total and immediate halt to all military operations", as well as the formation of a committee comprising government officials and Druze spiritual leaders to supervise its implementation. The defence ministry later said it had "begun withdrawing from the city of Sweida in implementation of the terms of the adopted agreement after the end of the sweep of the city for outlaw groups". The ministry's statement made no mention of the withdrawal of any other government security forces deployed to the city. In a video carried by state television, Sheikh Youssef Jarboua, one of Syria's three main Druze spiritual leaders, read out the 10 points of the agreement, which also included "the full integration of the province" of Sweida into the Syrian state. Until now, Druze areas have been controlled by fighters from the minority community. After Islamist-led rebels toppled longtime ruler Bashar al-Assad in December after 14 years of civil war, some Druze fighters said they were ready to integrate into the new security forces. The text of the ceasefire indicates that no harm will come to civilians or their property, after witnesses and a monitor reported abuses in recent days including summary executions and looting on the part of government forces and their allies. It also provides for "the release of detainees" and inquiries into the fate of the missing. Another influential Druze chief, Sheikh Hikmat al-Hijri, rejected the new agreement after it was announced. "There cannot be an accord or negotiations with these armed groups that call themselves a government," he said in a statement. Earlier on Wednesday, Hijri had appealed to US President Donald Trump, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu "and all those who have influence in the world" to "save Sweida". The Men of Dignity movement, one of the two largest Druze armed groups in the area, said Wednesday that "any agreement that does not include the full withdrawal of the invading forces... will be totally unacceptable". In a statement on Facebook, the group added it would keep fighting unless "the invaders withdraw from all the villages and towns that they have desecrated". The clashes in the south began on Sunday between the Druze and Bedouin tribes, who have a long-running feud, sparking an intervention by government forces who deployed in Sweida city. Witnesses reported that upon entering the city, the government forces joined with the Bedouin in attacking Druze fighters and civilians.

Raju Shetty vows to fight against Shaktipeeth highway
Kolhapur / Sindhudurg, Jul 16 (UNI) MP and president of Anti-Shaktipeeth Highway Action Committee, Raju Shetty, today termed the proposed Shaktipeeth Highway being built by the Maharashtra government as a "Swarthpeeth" (selfish pursuit), which will plunge the state into a debt trap, and vowed to continue his fight till this highway is cancelled. Talking to reporters at Sawantwadi in Sindhudurg district after visiting Sri Patradevi Goa area, he said, "Proposed Shaktipeeth Highway being built by the Maharashtra goverment, is a 'Swarthpeeth' (selfish pursuit), which will plunge the state into a debt trap, and I will fight till the last drop of my blood to get this highway cancelled." Shetty emphasised that his agitation for cancellation of proposed Shaktipeeth was not political but was for protecting the rights of the people of the land and to save the fragile environment. He said that the estimated expenditure of this proposed Shaktipeeth highway is Rs 86,000 crore but considering working style of the state government, the proposed expenditure will raise up to Rs 1.50 lakh crore, which will not be affordable for the government but mount the burden of loan on the state, he reasoned. He made an emotional appeal to the people of Sindhudurg district to extend support for cancellation of the proposed Shaktipeeth highway. Asked about statement of Konkan MLA Deepak Kesarkar who had said that the proposed Shaktipeeth highway will not pass through the Sindhudurg district, Shetty replied that the government has not changed its plan.
