Small boat gangs to face five years in prison for online ads

The UK government is introducing a new offence to criminalise gangs promoting illegal Channel crossings and other immigration breaches on social media. An amendment to the Border Security, Asylum and Immigration Bill will create a UK-wide offence targeting online material that facilitates illegal immigration, such as small boat journeys or fake travel documents. Individuals found guilty of this new offence could face a prison sentence of up to five years and a fine. The measure is being implemented as the number of migrants crossing the English Channel in small boats has exceeded 25,000 in 2025, the earliest point this figure has been reached in a calendar year. Home Secretary Yvette Cooper said the move aims to empower law enforcement to disrupt people-smuggling tactics more effectively.

Two arrested in connection to murder of Cambridge student

Two men have been arrested in connection with the murder of a man believed to be a student in Cambridge. A 20-year-old man was assaulted in Mill Park, Cambridge, on Friday 1 August. He was later pronounced dead. He is believed to have been a student at the EF International Language Campuses Cambridge. Cambridgeshire Police said they were called to the scene at 11.27pm on Friday after reports of violence. A 21-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder, and a 50-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender. Both remain in custody at Thorpe Wood Police Station. EF International Language Campuses Cambridge told The Telegraph it was "deeply saddened" at the death of one of its "adult students". The language school, which teaches children and adults, said: "We are working closely with the local police, who are investigating the incident and have confirmed they made arrests. "The safety and wellbeing of our students is our top priority. We are providing support to all students and staff affected by this tragic event and have organised counselling sessions. "Our thoughts are with the student's loved ones during this incredibly difficult time, and we have offered our full support." Detective Inspector Dale Mepstead, from the Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire Major Crime Unit, said the investigation into the murder remains ongoing. He urged anyone with information to contact the force as soon as possible.
