Raichur agri radio goes bilingual to reach global audience

Time of India31-05-2025
Raichur: The Agriculture FM station at the University of Agricultural Sciences, Raichur, will soon be accessible worldwide in two languages: Kannada and English.
Launched in 2023 with a frequency of 89.6 MHz under the title 'Krishi Samudaya Banuli Kendra', the station has so far only broadcast programmes in Kannada, reaching dozens of villages within 20 km radius.
Now, listeners can access agriculture-related programmes by downloading the Android app, KKCRS Raichur. This innovative broadcasting model was introduced on May 27 without any major announcement.
"We are now planning to broaden our outreach by offering information in English shortly. This initiative serves two purposes. Our farmers will be able to engage with experts from around the world, supported by our moderators.
Additionally, those interested in leveraging agricultural technologies and innovations will find it beneficial, as agriculture knows no boundaries," states vice-chancellor Dr M Hanumanthappa.
To turn this long-awaited vision into reality, UAS Raichur gathered the necessary infrastructure, including a well-equipped recording studio, cutting-edge technology, and a technical room. The directorate of agricultural extension is now prepared to broadcast programmes on FM radio, utilising technology that rivals that of any conventional radio station.
Given that a majority of mobile users possess Android devices, it is straightforward to install the app and tune into 'Kalyana Krishi Samudra Banuli Kendra,' explained VC Dr Hanumanthappa. He mentioned that the station will soon be the only agricultural radio station in the state to offer farmer-related programmes in multiple languages.
At present, various programmes are broadcast live daily from 6am to 9am and from 6pm to 9pm.
The KKCRS Raichur Android app has now come to the aid of thousands of farmers through web streaming. Additionally, programmes can be accessed by scanning the QR code created by the extension directorate of the University of Agricultural Sciences using an Android mobile device.
Programmes covering topics such as research scientists, agricultural extension units, horticulture, animal husbandry, university information, various projects, documentaries, interviews with agricultural scientists and progressive farmers, the introduction of agricultural technologies, field experiences, weather reports, as well as entertainment, satirical dialogues, debates, and the promotion of rural agricultural literature and arts will now reach hundreds of thousands of farmer friends globally through the Kalyana Krishi Samudra Banuli Kendra.
The university is organising a formal launch for the event, and the schedule will be announced once all necessary preparations are finalised.

Beta Release: Aristotle AI Promises Smarter Conversations

Vlad Tenev, the co-founder and CEO of Robinhood, decided to co-found an AI company. His new venture, Harmonic, is a different beast altogether: a startup focused on artificial intelligence, now entering public view with the beta launch of its chatbot app, on both iOS and Android, Aristotle is, at the surface level, another entrant in the increasingly saturated AI assistant space. Think ChatGPT, but with more branding flair. Harmonic pitches Aristotle as a reasoning-first model, but not just a chatbot that spits out facts, but one that aims to engage in deeper, more thoughtful conversations. The name alone sets expectations high, evoking philosophical inquiry rather than just transactional queries. Somewhat, the app interface is clean, and the conversation flow feels more nuanced than what you'd get from a baseline language model. Aristotle seems to push users to consider 'why' and 'how' more than just 'what.' It occasionally probes with follow-up questions, which can be refreshing - or redundant, depending on what you're looking said, what Harmonic is doing right is focusing. The company isn't chasing enterprise contracts or trying to be everything to everyone. This is a mobile-first, consumer-facing experience, optimized for individual users rather than institutions. In a market where many AI startups are pivoting toward enterprise sales just to survive, this alone sets Harmonic apart - for now. Aristotle achieved a gold medal performance on the 2025 International Math Olympiad (IMO) through a formal test (meaning the problems were translated into a machine‑readable format). Google and OpenAI also developed AI models that achieved gold medal performance on this year's IMO, but through informal tests taken in natural language. The model itself hasn't been open-sourced or benchmarked publicly, so it's hard to gauge technical merit beyond anecdotal usage. Tenev claims Aristotle is 'built to reason.'Ultimately, Aristotle is interesting. The app feels polished, the ideas behind it are ambitious, and Harmonic's commitment to building a truly conversational AI is commendable. But unless the product can show measurable improvements in logic, comprehension, or trustworthiness over established models, it risks becoming just another pretty interface on top of the same backend now, it's a beta worth keeping an eye on, but not because of what it is, but because of what it might evolve into.

Over 13.6 million mobile numbers disconnected to check fraud: Scindia

New Delhi: Union Minister of Communications Jyotiraditya M. Scindia informed Parliament on Wednesday that over 13.6 million mobile numbers have been disconnected based on citizens' feedback to curb telecom fraud. The minister said that in a major nationwide push to curb cyber fraud and protect citizens from digital threats, the Government of India has rolled out a series of decisive, tech-enabled measures under the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), in close coordination with the Ministry of Home Affairs. A key feature introduced is the 'Know Your Mobile Connections' service, which allows users to check all numbers issued under their name and report any unauthorised connections. This has resulted in the disconnection of 13.6 million such numbers, he explained. The minister said that DoT has also blocked 5.5 lakh handsets and deactivated 20,000 bulk SMS senders. Nearly 24 lakh WhatsApp accounts involved in suspicious activities have also been disengaged. He highlighted that a Digital Intelligence Platform has been developed, bringing together 620 institutions, including 570 banks, 36 state police forces, investigative agencies, and telecom service providers, to jointly tackle fraud in real-time. The platform enables integrated action against scammers and cybercriminals who misuse telecom infrastructure to deceive citizens. To further involve the public in this mission, the Government launched the Sanchar Saathi portal on May 16, 2023, which has since registered over 15.5 crore hits, indicating strong public awareness and participation. Building on this success, the Sanchar Saathi mobile app was launched on January 17, 2025, for both Android and iOS, and has received over 44 lakh downloads. The Government has also deployed artificial intelligence tools, notably the ASTR system, to automatically detect and eliminate fake mobile numbers, leading to the disconnection of an additional 82 lakh such connections. Addressing the serious issue of international spoof calls, where foreign numbers appear as Indian calls, the DoT introduced a centralised software solution under the International Incoming Spoof Calls Prevention. On the very first day, 1.35 crore such spoof calls were blocked, and ongoing efforts have brought down such incidents by 97 per cent. Today, only about three lakh spoof calls are being detected daily, compared to the earlier massive volumes. Telecom operators have also been mandated to display 'International Call' alerts on all such incoming numbers for greater user transparency, the minister said. He also stated that in a significant technological leap, the Fraud Risk Indicator (FRI) system was introduced to assess user risk levels—Very High, High, or Medium—based on banking and transaction behaviour. This risk data is shared with banks in real time, helping them prevent suspicious transactions. Over 3.7 lakh individuals have been flagged under these categories, leading to the prevention of more than 3.04 lakh debit/credit instructions and the freezing of 1.55 lakh bank accounts. Recognising the system's effectiveness, the Reserve Bank of India has instructed all banks to integrate FRI into their internal systems. Additionally, the DoT has taken firm steps against the misuse of Indian SIMs operating from Southeast Asian countries. Over 26 lakh such roaming mobile connections have been disconnected, and around 1.3 lakh devices used in such scams have been blocked. These ongoing efforts signal the Government's strong commitment to protecting citizens, securing telecom networks, and building a digitally secure India. Citizens are encouraged to remain vigilant and make full use of tools like the Sanchar Saathi portal and app to report suspicious activities, check their mobile connections, and help build a fraud-free digital ecosystem, the minister added. Apple Introduces Video Call Support With Specialists For Shoppers In India

New Delhi: With a rising number of people browsing and shopping online, iPhone maker Apple on Wednesday announced a service that would enable customers in India to connect on a video call with an Apple specialist for personalised advice and help in comparing models when buying its products. In a release, Apple said India is the second country to get this service, building on the company's expanding retail presence here. Earlier this year, the company launched the Apple Store app in India for easier and more personalised browsing, buying, and support experience. "Apple today introduced Shop with a Specialist over Video in India, offering customers a new way to shop for Apple products on the Apple Store online. The service connects customers with an Apple Store team member via a secure, one-way video call to browse the latest Apple products, including the iPhone 16 lineup; discover new features; and learn about Apple's trade-in program, financing options, and more - all from the comfort of their homes," Apple said in a release. During the session, customers can get tailored, personalised advice, enabling them to compare models and learn more about available purchase options to decide on the product that suits their needs. The service, offered in English, will support customers on iOS and non-iOS devices. "India is a vibrant and dynamic market, and we're thrilled to deepen our connection with customers here through Shop with a Specialist over Video,' Karen Rasmussen, Apple's head of Retail Online, said.
