Slow down and look up: Extra law enforcement on MN roads starting Thursday
With the summer travel season approaching, authorities are hoping to put the brakes on speeding and other dangerous driving.
Extra law enforcement will be out from Thursday, May 1 through Sept. 2, the Minnesota Department of Public Safety's Office of Traffic Safety announced on Wednesday.
Officers, deputies and troopers from nearly 300 agencies statewide will be participating in the extra enforcement.
Here's why: Memorial Day through Labor Day are typically the most traveled days on Minnesota roads and nationwide.
'These so-called '100 deadliest days' carry some of the largest fatal crash counts every year,' according to the DPS' news release.
'To push back against the rise in deadly driving and to try to save lives, law enforcement will be focusing on speeding, seat belt usage, impairment and distraction — the four behaviors that are the largest contributors to fatal crashes.'
So far in Minnesota in 2025, there have been at least 15 speed-related fatalities, authorities report.

Arrests made in Gwinnett park shootings, 1 linked to gang activity
Four people have now been arrested in connection with two separate shootings at Briscoe Park in Snellville over Memorial Day weekend that left families running for cover. [DOWNLOAD: Free WSB-TV News app for alerts as news breaks] The latest arrest came Thursday when Snellville Police charged 18-year-old Nasear Johnson with five counts of aggravated assault for the Saturday night shooting that injured five teenagers. Two other suspects were arrested in June in connection with the same incident. Joshua Zere, 17, was arrested June 11 and charged as a party to a crime for aggravated assault along with gang-related charges. Eric Meier-Harris, 17, was arrested June 12 on five counts of aggravated assault. Court testimony on July 23 for Zere revealed the Saturday night violence stemmed from gang rivalry between competing groups. Police say rival gangs had an argument at the birthday party that led to a shootout. Paul Williams was taking family photos when gunfire erupted that Saturday night and happened to be near where more than 100 people were at the party. 'Stray bullets were flying. My kids could have got hit. I could have got hit. My wife could have got hit,' Williams said. Williams was near the gazebo with eight children when bullets started flying just 200 feet away. 'We run. We got to the car. My kids got in the car. My kids are crying. We are rushing into the car,' Williams said. Investigators collected more than 30 shell casings from multiple caliber weapons including rifles. Five teenagers between 14 and 17 years old were shot and hospitalized. The next afternoon brought another shooting at the same park when 32-year-old Christopher Gaston allegedly shot one man near the baseball fields while families watched children play. Police have not released a motive for that shooting. He turned himself voluntarily on July 22, according to court records. Since the incidents, Snellville has increased patrols from police and private security. City leaders are also exploring lighting and security camera improvements at the park. 18-wheeler driver who allegedly fell asleep on the highway, killing 5, indicted on 9 felony charges
The man who allegedly fell asleep behind the wheel of an 18-wheeler causing a deadly crash in Kaufman County has been indicted on nine felony counts related to the crash. Alexis Osmani Gonzalez-Companioni, 27, was indicted on four counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and five counts of manslaughter, according to Kaufman County court records. Five people died and a sixth person was hospitalized after the crash on I-20 near Hiram Road on June 28, authorities said. The crash happened at about 2:40 p.m., when the Texas Department of Public Safety said Gonzalez-Companioni allegedly fell asleep behind the wheel of his 18-wheeler and did not see stalled traffic in front of him. He then struck a Ford F-150 carrying five people. Four of the five people in the Ford F-150 were pronounced dead at the scene, while the fifth was flown to a hospital in critical condition, DPS said in a news release. The 18-wheeler driven by Gonzalez-Companioni was then pushed into two other 18-wheelers, causing one to jack-knife and strike a Jeep Compass, a Ford Mustang, and a Honda passenger vehicle, according to DPS. One person in the Jeep Compass struck by the jack-knifed semi was also pronounced dead at the scene, DPS said.

26-year-old's body found months after she vanished in river in CA national park
The body of a 26-year-old woman was recovered months after she was swept away in a river at a California national park, rangers said. Jomarie Calasanz of La Puente was found dead July 24 by search teams, Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks said in a July 29 news release. Her identity was confirmed July 28. 'Now, Jomarie rests in the Peace of Christ—freed from all suffering, embraced by God's eternal love, and welcomed into the joy of everlasting life. May all be comforted in knowing that she is found. We hope that as this Good News brings us closure, it may also bring closure to the many individuals who have been touched by Jomarie's life,' her family said in a July 29 Facebook post. Calasanz went to Sequoia National Park on Memorial Day weekend with her family, McClatchy News reported. At one point, she saw her older sister struggling in the Kaweah River near Paradise Creek Bridge, so she jumped in the water to save her. But both sisters ended up caught in the fast-moving currents. Her sister, Joanne Calasanz, made it out of the water safely, but Jomarie Calasanz wasn't seen again. Search teams looked for Jomarie Calasanz for nine days before 'scaling down due to dangerous river conditions,' park officials said. The teams waited to look for her again until it was safe to do so because of the dangerous high-flowing water, park officials said. Those teams then set out to find her July 24, and they found her body that day, officials said. Diver Juan Heredia and his team also spent two days searching the river for Jomarie Calasanz, he said in a July 14 Facebook post. Heredia said he covered between 5 and 7 miles, 'diving in pools, under boulders, searching the shores—and we couldn't find her.' Heredia said in a July 29 Facebook post that Jomarie Calasanz 'died a hero' saving her sister. 'Jomarie didn't die in vain,' he wrote. Sequoia National Park is about an 80-mile drive southeast from Fresno.
