How grave that crisis was."advertisementIn the audio, Morarji Desai, the prime minister after the Emergency, said the "oppression" of the Indira Gandhi regime was going on for several years but reached its peak in the last two years after the Emergency was imposed.Desai said, "People's right to freedom was snatched away, newspapers were left without freedom. And the way more than one lakh people were put in jail and then arbitrary rule continued, it is difficult to find its traces in the history of the world."Modi said in the broadcast that people were tortured on a large scale during the Emergency for the 21-month period between 1975 and 1977. N. Ramchander Rao To Be New Telangana BJP Chief
Hyderabad: Senior leader N. Ramchander Rao is likely to be appointed as the new President of Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) Telangana unit, party sources said on Monday. The party's central leadership is understood to have finalised Mr Rao as the State BJP President. A High Court advocate and former Member of Legislative Council (MLC), Rao will file the nomination for the post on Monday afternoon. With the Central leadership conveying its choice, no other leader is likely to enter the fray. Mr Rao is likely to be elected unanimously on Tuesday. Though Union Minister of State Bandi Sanjay and BJP MPs Eatala Rajender and Arvind Dharmapuri were seen as strong contenders for the post, the BJP's central leadership is believed to have preferred Ramchander Rao, a party loyalist and non-controversial figure. A Brahmin, Mr Rao had been active in Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad, Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha and the legal cell of the BJP. He earlier headed the BJP's Hyderabad unit. A section of senior leaders of BJP and Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) are understood to have backed the choice of Ramchander Rao. Meanwhile, reacting to reports of Ramchander Rao being picked as the next State BJP President, controversial leader and MLA T. Raja Singh said the state party President should be elected by party cadres. He added that his personal view is that from booth-level workers to senior leaders, the active members of the party should elect the President. The MLA from Goshamahal constituency in Hyderabad said that the party suffered damage in the past due to appointment of Presidents recommended by some people. He said that the party workers are the real strength of the BJP and because of their efforts the party won eight Lok Sabha seats last year. The BJP on Sunday issued notification for election of new state unit chief. Nominations can be filed on Monday from 2 to 4 p.m. while nominations can be withdrawn from 4 to 5 p.m. the same day. Union Minister of State for Ministry of Labour and Employment, Shobha Karandlaje, will serve as the Returning Officer. Several top BJP leaders were seen as front-runners to succeed current state party President and Union Minister G. Kishan Reddy. They included Union Minister of State for Home Bandi Sanjay, who was removed as the state BJP President before 2023 Assembly elections, MPs Arvind Dharmapuri, Eatala Rajender, K. Laxman and D.K. Aruna. Union Minister Kishan Reddy was appointed State BJP President ahead of 2023 Assembly elections, replacing Bandi Sanjay. He led the party in Assembly elections and in 2024 Lok Sabha polls. While the BJP could win just eight seats in 119-member Assembly, it improved its performance in Lok Sabha polls to double the tally of seats to eight. After BJP retained power at the Centre, Union Minister Kishan Reddy was re-inducted into the Cabinet. A change in the state leadership has been on cards for several months.

Lalit Modi's Plea Seeking BCCI To Pay ED Penalty Dismissed By Supreme Court
The Supreme Court on Monday junked a plea filed by former cricket administrator Lalit Modi seeking an order to the BCCI to pay a penalty of Rs 10.65 crore imposed on him by the ED for violating the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA). A bench of Justices P S Narasimha and R Mahadevan, however, said Modi will be entitled to avail civil remedies as available according to law. The Bombay High Court on December 19 last year had imposed a cost of Rs 1 lakh on Modi while dismissing his petition seeking an order to the BCCI to pay a penalty of Rs 10.65 crore imposed on him by the Enforcement Directorate for violating FEMA. The high court had said the petition was "frivolous and wholly misconceived" as the adjudication authority under FEMA has imposed the penalty on Modi. Modi, in his plea, said he was appointed as vice president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India, during which period he was also the chairman of the Indian Premier League governing body, a subcommittee of the BCCI. The plea claimed that the BCCI is supposed to indemnify him as per the bylaws. The HC bench, however, referred to a Supreme Court judgment of 2005, which said the BCCI does not fall under the definition of a 'state' as defined under Article 12 of the Constitution. Despite clear orders from the apex court, Modi filed this petition in 2018, the HC bench noted. "In matters of alleged indemnification of the petitioner (Modi) in the context of penalties imposed upon the petitioner by the ED, there is no question of discharge of any public function, and therefore, for this purpose, no writ could be issued to the BCCI," the HC had said. "In any event, the reliefs are wholly misconceived. This petition is frivolous, and accordingly, we dismiss this petition," the court had said and directed Modi to pay a sum of Rs 1 lakh to the Tata Memorial Hospital within four weeks. Supreme Court rejects plea to hand over Bodh Gaya temple management to Buddhists
The Supreme Court on Monday rejected a petition seeking directions to hand over the control and management of Bihar's Mahabodhi Mahavira temple in Bodh Gaya to Buddhists, reported Live Law. The petitioner, former Minister of State Sulekha Kumbhare, had sought amendments to the Bodh Gaya Temple Act 1949. The act states that a committee constituted by the Bihar government will look after the 'management and control' of the Mahabodhi temple and its property. According to the act's provisions, the committee should include eight members nominated by the state government and four of them should be Hindus. The district magistrate will double as the chairman of the committee, provided he is a Hindu. In February, several Buddhist monks began an indefinite hunger strike in Bodh Gaya, demanding full control of the Mahabodhi temple. This was followed by rallies organised in Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, Telangana and Tamil Nadu, culminating in a massive rally in Bodh Gaya on March 18 and 19. On Monday, a bench of Justices MM Sundresh and K Vinod Chandran ruled that a plea under Article 32 of the Constitution could not be directly entertained by the court on the issue, Bar and Bench reported. The bench instead directed the petitioner to approach the Patna High Court. Article 32 grants every individual the right to move the Supreme Court for the enforcement of their fundamental rights. The petitioner had argued that fundamental rights under Articles 25, 26 and 29 would be violated unless the temple's management was handed over to Buddhists. The three articles of the Constitution deal with fundamental rights related to religion. Article 25 grants freedom of conscience and the right to profess, practice, and propagate religion. Article 26 allows religious denominations to manage their own affairs. Article 29 protects the interests of minorities by ensuring their right to conserve their language, script or culture and prohibiting discrimination in educational institutions based on religion, race, caste or language. The Mahabodhi temple, one of the four shrines associated with the Buddha and revered by followers of the religion, is located where Buddha is said to have attained enlightenment. Buddhism was born in the 6th century BC as an alternative to the emphasis on ritual and caste hierarchy in Hinduism.
