Impaired driving charges dropped against former Halifax Mooseheads star
Charges against the Halifax Mooseheads' career points leader were dropped Friday after the Crown offered no evidence at trial.
Jordan Dumais, who last suited up for the team a year ago, was charged after being pulled over by police in downtown Halifax at 2:20 a.m. AT on March 1, 2024.
But on Friday, the Crown received word shortly before they were due in court that the investigating officer would not be attending.
"As a result, the Crown determined that he could not proceed without the officer's testimony and offered no evidence," said Public Prosecution Service spokesperson Melissa Noonan in a statement.
Dumais, now 21, is from the Montreal area. He was suspended from the Mooseheads for five games at the time the charge was filed.
Defence lawyer Stan MacDonald entered a not-guilty plea on Dumais' behalf last July. He could not be reached for an interview.
Dumais was a third-round pick of the Columbus Blue Jackets in 2022. He played for Team Canada at the 2024 world juniors in Sweden, but then underwent abdominal surgery in Columbus, Ohio, following the tournament.
This season, Dumais played for the Cleveland Monsters in the American Hockey League, scoring four goals and seven assists in 21 games for the Blue Jackets' farm team.
In November 2023, Dumais broke the Mooseheads' franchise point record. He ended his four seasons with the Mooseheads with 325 points.

Toronto police are searching for a group of 14- and 15-year-old boys who allegedly stabbed a man in his 20s at a park in Riverdale early Saturday morning. The Saskatchewan Roughriders have an undefeated record, but the CFL club is admittedly not perfect. Lions in a game that featured a pair of veteran backup quarterbacks going head-to-head for their respective teams. Jake Maier made his first start at quarterback for the Green and White in place of the injured Trevor Harris and his teammates made it easy on him. While Maier was effective moving the ball at times through the air, a strong rushing attack and a defence that forced four turnovers helped take some pressure off him. In 45 career starts with Calgary prior to coming to Saskatchewan, Maier has thrown for 300 yards on 13 different occasions. He threw for 170 yards on Saturday night and that was more than enough to get the win. Article content 2. It's a luxury for the Roughriders to have an experienced backup. While the Lions had two effective touchdown drives, aided by the play of running back James Butler, Masoli threw three interceptions including a costly pick six that was the turning point in the game. After notching his first interception in the CFL since 2018 last week against Toronto, Riders defensive back Tevaughn Campbell was the one scoring on that pick-six as he put exclamation on the first half with an interception returned for a touchdown to put the Riders up 16-7 at the break. Filling that cornerback spot was one of the biggest needs for the Roughriders this off-season and Campbell — who has adjusted back to the CFL game after six years in the NFL — has been a great addition.

City of Ottawa employee charged after National Holocaust Monument vandalized, mayor says

(Sean Kilpatrick/THE CANADIAN PRESS) A City of Ottawa employee currently on leave has been charged in connection to vandalism at the National Holocaust Monument earlier this month, according to Mayor Mark Sutcliffe. Red paint was discovered on the monument just west of downtown Ottawa on June 9. A photo sent to CTV News Ottawa showed the words 'Feed Me' painted in large red letters on the monument. The Ottawa Police Service announced Friday a 46-year-old man was charged with mischief to a war memorial, mischief exceeding $5,000 and harassment by threatening conduct. The name of the suspect was not released. In a post on social media Saturday evening, Sutcliffe said the suspect is a city employee. 'While it's encouraging to see that the police investigation into the incident at the National Holocaust Monument has progressed, I'm very disturbed to learn that the person charged is a city employee who was on leave,' Sutcliffe said. 'As a community and as an employer, the actions at the Monument do not represent our values. I've asked city officials to take all appropriate action in light of these developments.' The suspect was scheduled to appear in court on Saturday. The Ottawa Police Service says anyone with information is asked to contact investigators with the Hate and Bias Crime Unit at 613-236-1222, ext. 5625. 'The OPS treats incidents of this nature seriously and recognizes their profound impact on the community,' police said in a media release on Friday. 'We encourage anyone who witnesses or experiences such incidents to report them to police. Reporting hate-motivated incidents is an important step in stopping cycles of hatred.' According to the National Holocaust Monument website, the monument in Ottawa commemorates the six million Jewish men, women and children murdered during the Holocaust, and the millions of other victims of Nazi Germany and its collaborators. The monument was inaugurated by former prime minister Justin Trudeau in September 2017.
