Nintendo announces new Direct presentation for Thursday

Yahooa day ago
July 30 (UPI) -- Nintendo has announced a new Direct presentation that will showcase new games coming to the Switch and Switch 2 consoles.
The Direct, labeled as a Partner Showcase, will live stream on Nintendo's official YouTube and Twitch channels Thursday starting at 9 a.m. EDT.
The Partner Showcase title means Nintendo will be highlighting games from third-party publishing partners, as opposed to games made and published by Nintendo.
The Direct will run about 25 minutes.
Upcoming third-party games that could potentially make an appearance include titles such as the eagerly anticipated sequel Hollow Knight: Silksong, Hades 2, developer FromSoftware's The Duskbloods and a Switch 2 version of the highly-acclaimed Elden Ring titled Elden Ring: Tarnished Edition.
Nintendo launched the Switch 2 console in June alongside Mario Kart World. Nintendo then released the critically-acclaimed Donkey Kong Bananza for the new console in July.

Temuera Morrison wants native Hawaiians to be proud of 'Chief of War'

Photo courtesy of Apple TV+ NEW YORK, July 31 (UPI) -- Aquaman and The Book of Boba Fett actor Temuera Morrison says he hopes native Hawaiians are proud that Chief of War focuses on their history and features a primarily Polynesian cast. "This is very fresh. I haven't seen anything quite like this before in my whole life," Morrison, 64, told UPI in a recent Zoom interview. "At the end of the day, I want Hawaiian people to be proud and reclaim themselves, reclaim their identity and feel proud about their Hawaiian heritage," the New Zealander added. "We're blessed because we're all the same people." Morrison said that on the first day of filming, the woman who operated the boom microphone told him he was playing her ancestor. #ChiefOfWar premieres tomorrow. ʻĀpōpō ka hōʻike mua o Chief of War. Apple TV (@AppleTV) July 31, 2025 "That's all she said and she waled away and I said, 'Oh, my God!' It suddenly hit me that we have a responsibility here. We are representing all these people and I am playing her ancestor. Fortunately for me, she never hit me on the head with her microphone, so I must have been on the right track." Premiering Friday on Apple TV+, the nine-episode series takes place in 18th century Hawaii when the islands' leaders disagreed about whether they should peacefully unify or conquer each other. Jason Momoa co-wrote and produced the action drama, in which he also plays Ka'iana, the titular hero. Morrison plays his frenemy Chief Kahekili and Cliff Curtis plays Keoua, another rival king. "Jason needed some support posts around him. He knew Cliff and I had the experience in this medium," Morrison said. "We were humbled to get the opportunity. Personally, it was quite an adventure, spiritually, culturally. We all had to learn the Hawaiian language. That was quite challenging." Morrison admitted he initially had some reservations about taking on the pivotal role in such an epic. "I'm very, very grateful that I decided to do this project because I was trying to run away in the beginning. I didn't think I could do it," he recalled. "Then, there were things like the cold. We were running around with hardly any clothes on. My feet aren't as hard as our Polynesian ancestors' used to be. Every now and then, I'd be like: 'Ah! Ah! Can I wear my shoes, please, please!' The volcanic rocks were killing me, but what a journey it's been." It was Hawaiian-born Momoa who convinced Morrison to join the epic project. "Jason said: 'Bro, bro, we're the same people, man! We're the same people. Get on board!' So, with those words of encouragement, I said, 'Yeah, bro, you are right. I think it's about sharing our Polynesian culture and heritage and supporting one another," Morrison said. Fear the Walking Dead and The Meg alum Curtis, 57, described his and Morrison's characters as the antagonists of the story. "The hero's journey is shown through the character Ka'iana, played by Jason Momoa. He's the chief who left the Hawaiian islands, went into the world and came back with technology to help unite the islands," Curtis said. "The chief of war has to choose which king he is going to fight for. It's a classic, archetypal story structure. Even though there is a new language and new costumes, visages and things that look different, the classical structure is something that all of humanity can relate to and recognize themselves in it." The geopolitics of the bygone era mirrors what some people are still experiencing in 2025, Curtis noted. "As we look back to our past, we see our ancestors struggle with the very same things as our current situation in the world," he added. "To live in peace or live in war." The ensemble also includes Luciane Buchanan,Te Ao o Hinepehinga, Kaina Makua, Moses Goods, Siua Ikale'o, Brandon Finn, James Udom, Mainei Kinimaka, Te Kohe Tuhaka and Benjamin Hoetjes. Jason Momoa's career: epic action roles and red carpets Jason Momoa (C), a cast member in "Conan the Barbarian," attends the premiere of the film with his girlfriend at the time, actress Lisa Bonet (R), and her daughter with Lenny Kravitz, actress Zoe Kravitz, at the Regal Theatre in Los Angeles on August 11, 2011. Battlefield 6 Beta: How to Get Early Access and Open Beta Times

EA's DICE studio has blown the lid off the multiplayer for its upcoming military shooter Battlefield 6, and players will soon get to join the fray themselves. A Battlefield 6 public beta is coming on two consecutive weekends starting on August 9 -- and if you're lucky enough to get in Early Access, to play starting August 7 -- and here's how to join. The Battlefield 6 open betas will be the first chances for players to get to experience the game's multiplayer before its full release on October 10. The first open beta weekend will start at 1 a.m. PT on August 9 through August 10 and the second will kick off at 1 a.m. PT on August 14 and run through August 17. Fans can visit Battlefield's website to get info for the open beta, which just requires linking your EA account to your platform account. Note that publisher EA hasn't provided a specific sign-up for the beta just yet, but it will be open to all players. We'll update this post if or when EA has provided explicit instructions for signing up, but we do know the open beta can be pre-downloaded on respective platforms starting August 4. The beta will be playable on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. Twitch's drops campaign list includes various campaigns that reward players for watching streams participating in the campaign -- like this one granting early access to Battlefield 6's public beta. Screenshot by David Lumb/CNET How to get Battlefield 6 open beta early access There is one way to secure your spot in the open beta a couple days early on August 7: watch your favorite streamer playing Battlefield 6 today (July 31), as explained in an official post on X. You can watch on the official Battlefield Twitch or on a participating creator's channel -- here are the steps: Sign into your Twitch account Make sure you have drops enabled and the Battlefield 6 Early Access Beta Key Drops selected from among the drops campaigns list Watch a single streamer participating in the Battlefield 6 Early Access Beta Key Drops for 60 minutes Find your beta key access in your Drops Inventory Players who have participated in Battlefield Labs, studio DICE"s pre-release feedback program for the game, will be granted early access to play the beta starting August 7. Studio DICE didn't detail which modes, weapons and other options will be playable in the open beta, though they did confirm that "Closed Weapons" modes that restrict certain guns to certain classes will be available to try out. If the preview is anything to go by, players will be able to load up a handful of multiplayer modes, like Conquest, Squad Deathmatch and Breakthrough, on maps like Siege of Cairo, Empire State and Liberation Peak. PC specific notice for Battlefield 6 beta A special note if you haven't played a Battlefield game on PC recently: studio DICE and EA recently started requiring players to set their computers to Secure Boot when playing Battlefield games in order to combat cheaters, and Battlefield 6 is no different. To even play the open beta, you'll need to delve into your BIOS and switch your PC to Secure Boot -- check EA's guide for help.
