Steve Sarkisian earns spot on Dodd Trophy preseason watch list
As Sarkisian looks to add to his trophy case, he will have competition. He was one of 26 coaches in the nation on the list. This is not unfamiliar territory for the architect of the Longhorns' success. Last year, Sarkisian was honored on both the 2024 Dodd Trophy preseason and midseason watch lists.
During Sarkisian's tenure, the Longhorns have been one of the most successful programs in the country. They have one of the best chances at winning a national title after tying the program record with 13 wins last season. Over the last two years, with Sarkisian leading the way, Texas has 25 wins. However, his impact on his players extends beyond the box score.
He has also helped his players reach their dreams. Just a few months ago, former Longhorns stars such as Matthew Golden, Gunnar Helm, Quinn Ewers, and Andrew Mukaba were drafted by NFL teams. The year before, Adonai Mitchell and Xavier Worthy heard their names called after being coached by Sarkisian. That is partly why the Longhorns head coach is up for another honor.
Although Sarkisian's focus is on winning a national title, he won't have to wait long to see if he advances to the next round. The field will be narrowed down at midseason. The winner will then be picked by a panel that includes previous winners, national media, a member of the Dodd family, and a College Football Hall of Fame member.
While Sarkisian will ultimately be judged by wins and losses, adding more hardware to his trophy case would be a reason to celebrate. He has a good resume to back it up with what he has accomplished during his time in Austin.

Finally! Longhorns win recruiting battle for four-star CB Samari Matthews
Texas has had a rough patch in recruiting. During the Fourth of July week, the Longhorns lost nine recruiting battles in a row, then saw a tenth prospect commit elsewhere this week. But the streak is over. UT has landed a commitment from four-star cornerback Samari Matthews. The Cornelius, NC native chose Texas over South Carolina, Miami, and Florida State. Matthews ranks as the nation's No. 6 cornerback and No. 5 best player from North Carolina and No. 57 overall, according to 247Sports industry rankings. Currently, the Longhorns 2026 class includes one cornerback, three-star Hayward Howard Jr. While he is a talented prospect, adding more depth at the position is key for UT. Matthews took official visits to all four of his finalists over the past few weeks. What stood out about Texas? "What stood out was the players and staff, and how much they all love being around each other," Matthews told Horns247 in June. "I can't really tell you why I like Texas, I've just always liked it. It's something about them that stands out to me." Follow us on X (formerly Twitter) at @LonghornsWire.

Texas' recruiting struggles could end tonight—will a four-star choose the Longhorns or South Carolina?
Texas' recruiting struggles could end tonight—will a four-star choose the Longhorns or South Carolina? originally appeared on A to Z Sports. Hough (N.C.) cornerback Samari Matthews will decide Friday between Texas, South Carolina, Florida State, and Miami on YouTube. As of this writing, recruiting analysts are predicting the Longhorns to receive good news. But things could potentially shift as the time to commit approaches. Advertisement Matthews is the the No. 70 overall prospect, the No. 9 cornerback, and the No. 6 recruit in the state of North Carolina, per Rivals' Industry Ranking. The 6-foot, 180 pound recruit was rarely tested in his junior season, finishing with 19 tackles and two interceptions. 247Sports' scouting analyst Clint Brewster evaluated Matthew in-person earlier this summer. The takeaways were eye-opening. Matthews qualifies as one of the top-tier cornerbacks in the class as a complete player that's checked boxes in terms of physical ability and testing metrics. Adequate height/weight/speed with ability to shell and mirror in both man coverage of zone situations. Stays lockstep both underneath and over the top with quick-reacting traits and physicality through contested catches. Pattern match skills that translates to the next level. Very technically sound and can read, drive, and finish. The type of cornerback that can matchup against bigger wide outs and hold his own. Doesn't get much action his way to show off ball skills and athleticism when the football is in the air. Projects as a Day-2 draft pick with multi-year starter potential for a an elite college team. - Clint Brewster, 247Sports View the original article to see embedded media. South Carolina is the biggest threat to Texas heading into Samari Matthews' announcement. On3's Wes Mitchell, South Carolina recruiting analyst, gave his thoughts on the head-to-head matchup this week. With the caveat that things can always change in recruiting, my expectation is that Cornelius (N.C.) Hough four-star cornerback Samari Matthews will pick Texas on Friday. It's gone, at least from the info I've gathered, from being something I thought was at least a possibility to being the expectation. While Texas did enter the game later than other schools that were in the mix, cornerbacks coach Mark Orphey was heavily involved with Matthews when he was at Rutgers, so there was a long-standing relationship here that predated the Longhorns officially getting involved. - Wes Mitchell, On3 The Longhorns only have two defensive back commits in the 2026 class so this one is big. Matthews is predicted by most to pick Texas this evening, but this commitment could go a lot further than just a checkmark in the commitment column. The recent struggles on the trail won't seem as bad if the talented prospect says "hook 'em" before the weekend starts. Longhorns basketball adds talented center from London
Texas Longhorns basketball has been busy improving their roster this week. On Tuesday, they signed a talented center in Lewis Obiorah. The London native spent last year playing at Barking Abbey Basketball Academy. While he may be an unknown to many in Texas, Obiorah has been making headlines in the Elite Academy Basketball League. Last year, Obiorah earned EABL championship finals MVP honors while leading Barking Abbey to the EABL championship. He averaged 10.7 points, 9.6 rebounds, and 3.7 blocks per game and was a human highlight reel every time he stepped on the court. In his first year with the Longhorns, Obiorah will join a roster that has undergone a lot of change. New head coach Sean Miller has been busy in the transfer portal upgrading the offense. Those additions include Dailyn Swain, Camden Heide, Matas Vokietaitis, and Simeon Wilcher. That group will be tasked with turning a program coming off a disappointing season. The Longhorns posted a 19-16 overall record during the 2024-2025 campaign. They struggled on the road and did not do well defending their home court. In his first season calling the shots, Miller is looking to get Texas back to the NCAA Tournament to make a deep March Madness run. With the start of the regular season only a few months away, the Longhorns roster includes three European players. Earlier this week, they signed Germany's Declan Duru Jr. Now that the roster is mostly set, the Longhorns can focus on building their team chemistry. While he still has a lot of room to grow, Obiorah has the potential to be a very good player for the Longhorns and gives Sean Miller another option at center.
