7 members of South American theft group arrested for Phoenix burglaries

Fox News26-05-2025
Seven members of a "South American Theft Group (SATG)" were arrested Friday for their involvement in two Phoenix-area burglaries, authorities said Saturday.
Both heists – one in Tempe and another in Mesa – were committed on May 23, the Scottsdale Police Department said.
All seven suspects were arrested on Friday at a short-term rental where they were staying, police said.
Scottsdale Police were alerted to the group on May 20 by the Burbank Police Department in California. They were warned about a SATG group from Colombia that had allegedly committed burglaries in California, Oregon and Washington, and were possibly headed to Arizona.
Among the stolen property in California was a French Bulldog, which will be given back to its owner, police said.
Authorities in California shared the group's vehicle descriptions and other information with Arizona authorities. Scottsdale detectives eventually tracked the suspects down to the short-term rental property, police said.
From May 20-22, authorities watched the group and followed them to the burglarized homes on May 23, police said.
"They observed all seven suspects coordinate and participate in burglary activity at both locations," a police statement said.
The suspects were identified as: Nicolas Rojas Leon, 23; Joan Sebastian Orozco-Vargas, 26; Andres David Sanchez-Novoa, 38; Natalia Isabella Ortiz-Daza, 26; Martha Juliana Echiverri-Guzman, 28; Lady Johanna Gueito, 32; and 25-year-old Angie Paola Herandez-Manrique.
Each suspect was ordered held in the Maricopa County Jail pending "numerous criminal charges" on $150,000 cash-only bonds.

Delta Air Lines pilot arrested after flight: Reports

A pilot on a Delta Air Lines flight from Minneapolis to San Francisco was arrested by federal agents after landing, according to reports. Travel outlet View from the Wing reported that officers "stormed to the front" of flight 2809 following its arrival at San Francisco International Airport on July 26. The plane landed at approximately 9:35 p.m. following a delay for heavy fog, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. Neither outlet named the pilot. Sarah Christianson, a first-class passenger on the flight, told the Chronicle that she witnessed at least 10 law enforcement officers, including agents from Homeland Security Investigations and people identifying as air marshals, involved in the arrest and that a second team of agents retrieved the pilot's belongings. "A group of people with badges, guns, and different agency vests/markings were pushing their way up through the aisle to the cockpit," Christianson told the newspaper. "It was rage-inducing to see someone being disappeared right in front of me." Footage following the arrest published by View from the Wing shows some of the alleged officers wearing plainclothes and badges. It is unclear from the footage if the officers were masked. Delta Air Lines declined to comment, referring USA TODAY to law enforcement. USA TODAY reached out to Homeland Security, ICE and the TSA for comment and did not receive an immediate response. Arizona man arrested after DNA match in 1984 murder-rape case of 2 California teens

An Arizona man was awaiting extradition to Shasta County, California, where authorities say he's their suspect in a murder-rape case that's gone unsolved for nearly 41 years. Roger Neil Schmidt Sr. of Tucson was arrested July 19 in connection with the 1984 shooting death of 18-year-old Terry Arndt and the sexual assault of a girl Arndt was with when he was killed, the Shasta County Sheriff's Office announced July 23. The 64-year-old faces murder and sexual assault charges, authorities said. Schmidt, who was born in Shasta County, was 23 years old and a Burney, California, resident when the crimes were committed in 1984, according to investigators. Arndt, an 18-year-old Shasta College student, was shot twice through the window of his parents' car with a rifle on a wooded lovers' lane near Burney High School, according to authorities. The assailant then sexually assaulted the teenage girl Arndt was with, authorities said. Another man was previously accused in the case. Thomas Elmer Brewster was exonerated during a 1997 capital trial. DNA taken from the girl's semen-stained blouse proved that Brewster wasn't her assailant. Nearly 30 years later, investigators had what seemed to be a breakthrough in the case, the Record Searchlight of Redding, California, first reported. In a press conference, Shasta County Sheriff Michael Johnson said his department worked with Tucson law enforcement officials and a private company specializing in investigative genealogy to carry out a search warrant and collect DNA evidence from Schmidt. Authorities compared Schmidt's DNA to evidence collected from the girl the night she was assaulted and obtained a match, he said. The DNA analysis "opened up a whole new avenue to the investigation, which ultimately led to the suspect's arrest," Johnson said. Schmidt was booked into the Pima County jail.
