Thailand's Khunying Patama Leeswadtrakul became the second woman president of the Badminton World Federation as her appointment as the new chief of the governing body was confirmed at the 86th BWF Annual General Meeting in Xiamen, China held on Saturday. Leeswadtrakul won unopposed as she was the only nominee for the position.
Khunying Patama succeeds Denmark's Poul-Erik Høyer, whose 12-year tenure as BWF President ends on Saturday.
Lu Shengrong, who served in the role from 1993 to 2001, was the first female chief of the global governing body. Lu's election as IBF President in 1993 was also the first Chinese president of any international sporting organisation.
'For me, badminton has always been more than a sport and tonight marks a deeply meaningful milestone,' said Khunying Patama. 'While badminton is in a strong position today, we must continue to work towards making badminton a truly global sport.
'The next Olympic and Paralympic Games in Los Angeles are just three years away and LA28 presents a powerful opportunity to elevate our sport on the world stage. We must be ready to grab this moment.' Høyer was awarded Honorary Life Vice President by the BWF membership at the AGM.

Utah Mammoth sues to obtain team name in trademark battle with hockey bag company

Utah Mammoth NHL team (via Getty Images) The Utah Mammoth NHL team has pursued legal action to safeguard its brand name and has filed a federal lawsuit against Mammoth Hockey LLC, the maker of hockey equipment, amidst escalating trademark conflict. The Smith Entertainment Group-owned team has requested the U.S. District Court to resolve the matter, presenting "months" of ongoing uncertainty due to the current dispute. Utah Mammoth resorts to courts as branding standoff with Mammoth Hockey escalates Utah's newest NHL team, the Utah Mammoth, is advancing to the next stage of its team development saga—not on the playing field, but inside the courtroom. The league has filed a complaint against Mammoth Hockey LLC, a business that manufactures premium hockey bags, following the latter's assertion that the naming of the NHL team "Mammoth" infringes its trademark rights. As per the court records, Mammoth Hockey initially favored the use of the name by the NHL team as part of the branding exercise through fans in 2024 and 2025. A June 2024 Facebook post, filed in the lawsuit, indicated that Mammoth Hockey was flagging the "Mammoth" choice using a thumbs-up emoji and statement. Mammoth Hockey went so far as to contact Chris Armstrong, president of the Utah Mammoth, in April 2025 to discuss a potential cooperation. SEG Hockey, which owns the Utah Mammoth, sent a letter back rejecting that assertion and highlighting distinctions in logo designs, colors, and markets. NHL team asks court to clarify in growing trademark dispute The Utah Mammoth is now requesting the court to resolve the disagreement under the U.S. Declaratory Judgment Act based on the bag company's unclear threats of a lawsuit as a continued and unacceptable source of uncertainty. Attorneys for the team said the team's branding efforts have been stalled by the unresolved dispute.
