Badminton: Thailand's Khunying Patama Leeswadtrakul becomes BWF president, only 2nd woman ever to take up the role
Khunying Patama succeeds Denmark's Poul-Erik Høyer, whose 12-year tenure as BWF President ends on Saturday.
Lu Shengrong, who served in the role from 1993 to 2001, was the first female chief of the global governing body. Lu's election as IBF President in 1993 was also the first Chinese president of any international sporting organisation.
'For me, badminton has always been more than a sport and tonight marks a deeply meaningful milestone,' said Khunying Patama. 'While badminton is in a strong position today, we must continue to work towards making badminton a truly global sport.
'The next Olympic and Paralympic Games in Los Angeles are just three years away and LA28 presents a powerful opportunity to elevate our sport on the world stage. We must be ready to grab this moment.' Høyer was awarded Honorary Life Vice President by the BWF membership at the AGM.

Khunying Patama added: 'Badminton has come a long way over the past decade, and I am truly grateful for the strong foundations that have been laid by my good friend Poul-Erik Høyer.
Høyer reflected on his 12-year term, the growth of the sport, and his wishes for the future. 'It's a great honour to pass on the baton of BWF President to my dear friend and colleague Khunying Patama Leeswadtrakul,' said Høyer. 'I am sure badminton and the BWF will continue to grow and blossom under your leadership and guidance.
Paris 2024 CEO Etienne Thobois of France was confirmed as Deputy President-elect. He was the sole candidate for the position. Also at the AGM, the BWF membership formalised the permanent banning of the controversial 'spin serve' which was earlier temporarily banned. The next BWF AGM is planned for April or May 2026 in conjunction with the BWF Thomas & Uber Cup Finals 2026 in Horsens, Denmark.

Thrissur to host State School Kalolsavam from January 7 to 11
The 64th State School Kalolsavam will be held in Thrissur from January 7 to 11, 2026. Minister for Education V. Sivankutty said here on Tuesday (August 5) that a meeting to form the organising committee would be held at Indoor Stadium, Thrissur, on August 12. Sanskrit and Arabic literary festivals too will coincide with the school arts festival to be held at 25 venues. Thrissur last hosted the State school arts festival in 2018. The Minister said that school-level arts festival will be held in September, sub-district festival in the second week of October and district-level festival in the first week of November. Mr. Sivankutty said that an action plan was being prepared to demolish the school buildings in disrepair following a directive from Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan. State sports meet The Minister said that the State school sports meet will be held at Thiruvananthapuram in an Olympic style from October 22 to 27. About 24,000 students are expected to take part in the meet. District-level competitions will be completed by September. Mr. Sivankutty said that the State meet will be held in 20 venues. Last year's event was held in Kochi. An elaborate organising committee will be convened for the meet. There will be competitions for boys and girls in Under-14, Under-17 and Under-19 categories. Young athletes from schools in West Asia following Kerala syllabus can join the State sports meet, he said. Mr. Sivankutty said that a torch rally from Kasaragod to Thiruvananthapuram will be organised to promote the State school sports meet. Sports and arts celebrities will attend the closing ceremony of the State school sports meet. There will be march-past of districts and cultural performances by the children. The arts festival of teacher training institutes (TTI) and pre-primary teacher training institutes (PPTTI) will be held in Wayanad on September 12. Until 2007, TTI fest was held along with the State School Arts Festival. About 600 teacher-students will attend the festival. The State special school festival will be held at Malappuram from November 6 to 8, said the Minister.

The Smith Entertainment Group-owned team has requested the U.S. District Court to resolve the matter, presenting "months" of ongoing uncertainty due to the current dispute. Utah Mammoth resorts to courts as branding standoff with Mammoth Hockey escalates Utah's newest NHL team, the Utah Mammoth, is advancing to the next stage of its team development saga—not on the playing field, but inside the courtroom. The league has filed a complaint against Mammoth Hockey LLC, a business that manufactures premium hockey bags, following the latter's assertion that the naming of the NHL team "Mammoth" infringes its trademark rights.
