Meanwhile, CCTV footage was being examined to ascertain whether the glass came from a damaged vehicle or was deliberately thrown by miscreants.
The police, however, in a statement said that the glasses were accidently broken when they were being carried to the destination via an e-rickshaw, as reported by news agency ANI.
It said that the e-rickshaw, which was carrying a total of 19 glasses from Shalimar Garden to Seelampur has been identified and vehicle's driver has been detained for further questioning.
'The e-rickshaw, which was carrying a total of 19 glasses from Shalimar Garden to Seelampur, has been identified. The glasses were broken during the journey to the destination. The driver has been identified as Kusum Pal. He has been detained for further questioning," it said in a statement.
The incident came to light after Delhi Cabinet Minister Kapil Mishra raised the matter on social media on Saturday, expressing concern over the safety of the pilgrims and assuring that action would be taken. He had alleged that it was an act by some anti-social elements and that Chief Minister Rekha Gupta had taken note.
'In Delhi's Shahdara, some mischievous elements scattered glass shards along the Kanwar Yatra route for nearly a kilometre. PWD and municipal workers are cleaning the route. Local MLA Sanjay Goyal ji is present there. CM@gupta_rekha ji has personally taken cognisance of the incident. An FIR will be filed by PWD against the mischievous elements," Mishra said in a post on X.
Earlier today, Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena had posted on X, 'It came to notice yesternight that a large amount of shards of broken glass had been strewn on a stretch of about 1 km road in Dilshad Garden, on the route of Kanwar Yatris, who walk barefoot."
He said the police came to the spot and the public works department (PWD) cleaned the road within two hours. The police have also filed a first information report (FIR).
'… Crime branch is investigating the matter," the Lt Governor said.
BJP leader and Shahadara MLA Sanjay Goyal, who reached the spot to oversee the cleaning work on Sunday, said it was not the first time pieces of glass have been found on the same route.
Following the incident, police personnel were deployed in the area and they patrolled roads near the flyover and surrounding Kanwar camps to ensure safety.
Raman, a Kanwar yatri resting in one of the camps, told news agency PTI that the journey had been peaceful so far. "All arrangements are good and we have no issues. We saw a few glass pieces on the flyover, but many workers were cleaning the roads even at night," he said.

Odisha student who self-immolated over harassment inaction cremated; congress-led opposition calls bandh on 17th

NEW DELHI: The body of the college student who set herself ablaze following alleged sexual harassment by a professor reached her village in Odisha's Balasore district on Tuesday. The student's body was cremated in the presence of her family and other villagers. Thousands of people thronged the crematorium ground to attend her cremation. Balasore MP Pratap Sarangi, district officials and others walked to the crematorium ground from the house of the student. The 20-year-old second-year B. Ed student of Fakir Mohan (Autonomous) College, Balasore had accused the Head of Education Department, Samira Kumar Sahu of sexually harassing her. She set herself on fire on Saturday on the college campus over alleged inaction against the professor and suffered 95 per cent burns. The woman was first admitted to the Balasore district hospital and then shifted to AIIMS Bhubaneswar for advanced treatment. Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Tuesday announced ex gratia of Rs 20 lakh for the family of the student. Majhi directed officers concerned to conduct a proper investigation into the incident so that all guilty are punished in accordance with the law, according to a statement issued by the Chief Minister's Office (CMO). Condemning the Odisha BJP government, eight opposition parties, led by the Congress, called an Odisha bandh on July 17 to protest the death of the student. State Congress president Bhakta Charan Das said the bandh is being supported by eight parties, including the Left. He claimed the incident, which happened at the Fakir Mohan (Autonomous) College in Balasore, showed that the state government has failed to protect women. "She brought petrol, and everyone watched silently. No one acted," he said, attacking the ruling BJP.

Elevated corridor above Inner Ring Road on the cards to decongest Delhi: Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh

To tackle traffic congestion in the national capital, the Delhi Public Works Department (PWD) is planning to construct an elevated corridor or a third ring road above the existing Inner Ring Road. PWD Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh said the key aim is to decongest traffic jams and provide a smooth vehicular movement along one of Delhi's busiest arterial roads. A meeting in this regard was held last week, where the minister directed the department to appoint a consultant to prepare a Detailed Project Report (DPR). 'Looking at the increasing traffic load on the Ring Road, we plan to construct this elevated corridor over the existing road. Some parcels of land will be acquired, and ramps and loops will be built to connect the elevated road with arterial routes,' said the minister. Officials said that the inner ring road is 55 km long, starting from Shalimar Bagh in North Delhi to Azadpur. This is a vital commuter link that witnesses severe congestion during peak hours. The proposed elevated corridor is expected to span around 80 kilometres when ramps, loops, and additional connecting roads are included, offering improved connectivity and easing traffic flow at several known bottlenecks, said officials. PWD officials have also been instructed to expedite the consultant selection process to evaluate the technical and feasibility aspects of the project. 'Once the DPR is completed, the department will move toward execution, subject to approvals and funding,' said the minister. The initiative forms part of the Delhi government's broader plan to address persistent traffic snarls at multiple choke points across the capital, many of which are located along the Ring Road corridor. 'An expert committee formed earlier to examine traffic issues across the city is scheduled to meet this week to review the corridor proposal and suggest further steps. This project is a step toward a long-term solution for Delhi's traffic woes,' officials said.
