Mary Berry's 'unusual' ingredient for chilli con carne that 'adds to the flavour'
Whether you fancy your chilli packed with heat, topped with a generous helping of guacamole, or perhaps you swap the meat for beans, everyone has their own trusted approach. Yet one surprising ingredient in Mary Berry's recipe has left culinary experts amazed by the incredible flavour it brings to the dish, reports the Express.
Sugar is commonly added to counteract the sharpness of tomatoes, but in this recipe, Mary Berry opts for a different sweet component typically saved for curries and Indian cooking. Home chefs revealed the unexpected addition mellows the sharp taste in tomatoes, helps counterbalance the heat, and creates a rich depth of flavour.
The former Great British Bake Off presenter's recipe incorporates beans and red pepper to create a vegetarian version; though the trick works equally brilliantly with beef.
She also incorporates it into her hearty Irish stew. In a clip for Food Network, she explained: "You may think mango chutney is an unusual ingredient for a stew, but I find that it just adds to the flavour."
One home cook who attempted to recreate the chilli recipe overlooked the chutney initially but then discovered what a significant impact it created.
They posted on the Mary Berry Recipe fan website: "I even skipped the mango chutney because I figured, how much difference could it make? Spoiler: a lot.
"Once I stuck to the recipe properly-gave it time in the oven, let the spices mingle, and kept that chutney in-I finally got it. Deep, rounded flavour, tender beef, and a warmth that lingers."
Speaking about the flavour profile, they added: "Sounds odd, works wonders. It softens the tomatoes' acidity and adds just enough sweetness to round out the spice."
Another chef Anabelle Mclean said the chutney "is a delightful twist on the classic chili".
Writing on Belles Best Bites, she said: "It adds the tangy sweetness of mango chutney, enhancing the robust flavours of the chili and creating a harmonious balance between spicy and sweet."

BBC drama series praised as 'absolute perfection' by fans arrives on Netflix this weekend
One of the most raved about series of the 2020s is making its way onto Netflix this weekend and fans cannot wait. One of the most praised and gripping series that took the world by storm a few years ago is making its long awaited debut on Netflix this weekend. Normal People, the BBC drama that has been hailed by fans as a "masterpiece," will officially be available to stream from Sunday, August 3. Originally released in 2020 on BBC iPlayer, the 12-part series quickly became a cultural phenomenon, drawing both widespread critical acclaim and a passionate fanbase. Now, Netflix audiences will finally have the chance to revisit, or discover for the first time, the emotional and deeply affecting story that captivates the world. Adapted from Sally Rooney's best-selling novel, Normal People follows the intense and evolving relationship between two Irish teenagers, Connell Waldron and Marianne Sheridan, as they navigate the complexities of love, class and identity from their school days in Sligo to their university years in Dublin. The series spans more than a decade, following the main characters from their teenage years into adulthood. At the start Connell is the well-liked, quietly intelligent student while Marianne is the wealthy but socially isolated girl whose home Connell's mum cleans. When their paths cross again at university, the dynamic between them has shifted. Marianne has grown into herself, while Connell struggles to find his place, but despite these changes, the deep connection they share continues. As their relationship weaves in and out of romantic and platonic territory, the series earned widespread praise for its raw and honest portrayal of themes such as male mental health, sexuality and the emotional complexities of "friends with benefits" relationships. The show was an instant hit, and boosted the careers of Paul Mescal who plays Connell and Daisy Edgar-Jones who plays Marianne. Mescal went on to star in Gladiator II, and is playing Paul McCartney in the upcoming Beatles biopics, while Daisy has since starred in Where the Crawdads Sing and Twisters. The duo's chemistry and acting skills earned the show raving reviews with fans calling it a "masterpiece." Following the show's initial success on BBC iPlayer, Normal People received raving reviews and an impressive 91% Rotten Tomatoes score. Writing on Rotten Tomatoes, one fan of the series described Normal People as "deeply moving" expressing that the series "stayed with them long after watching." As another fan stated: "Real, raw and vulnerable. This highly emotional show had me hooked from the beginning." While other viewers added that the show is an "Irish masterpiece," and "absolute perfection." Another viewer praised the actors performance, writing: "Beautifully filmed with a great music score and pulled together by two extraordinary performances by Paul Mescal and Daisy Edgar-Jones. You felt every moment with the characters and at the end you just want to go back and watch it all over again." Viewers will be able to watch Normal People on iPlayer from Sunday, August 3, on Netflix.

Rylan Clark's ongoing heartbreak after divorce as he battles 'sharp pain'
Rylan Clark has opened up about his divorce from ex Dan Neal and his struggles years after separation. Getting over a relationship can be extremely difficult, it's a mountain range of emotions on a stormy sea as both parties deal with their emotions and attempt to heal following the split. Whether or not marriage was involved, the end of a relationship often leaves both individuals wrestling with grief, confusion and the task of healing. This was one topic former X Factor contestant Rylan Clark explored with his guest Vanessa Williams on his podcast 'Rylan: How to Be In Love', during which they shared their personal romantic experiences. Rylan was married to Dan Neal for six years, from 2015 to 2021. Whilst The Devil Wears Prada musical star Vanessa has been married three times, the Express reports. Her marriages include Ramon Hervey II, followed by Rick Fox, and most recently Jim Skrip. Interestingly both Rylan and Vanessa shared a similar timeline in one of their marriages, with Vanessa marrying Jim in 2015 and divorcing in 2021, the same years as Rylan's marriage. Reflecting on the experience, Rylan admitted he wouldn't want to go through a divorce again, describing the emotional toll as deeply painful. "I've had to do it once, and once was enough for me," he confessed. "You still get that weird sharp pain every now and again." The 36 year old continued: "It'll be something so stupid like, 'Oh that glass looks like...' and it's, like, that little. I couldn't imagine going through that twice. I don't know how I'd fare." Rylan has previously opened up about his marriage to Dan, with the BBC Radio 2 presenter sharing the emotional toll of his marriage ending. Rylan met Dan whilst on set for Big Brother's Bit on the Side, when Dan was giving his eviction interview in 2013. The pair hit it off instantly, with Rylan previously revealing to the Guardian in 2019, that he knew Dan was the one from their first kiss. He said: "The first one I had with my husband Dan in late 2013. I just knew." Their marriage came to an end in 2021, with Rylan admitting his infidelity was the reason for their split. He revealed in his 2022 memoir that he had been unfaithful years before and decided to confess in May 2021, not expecting that Dan would leave him. On the same podcast with Vanessa, Rylan delved deeper revealing how the breakdown of his marriage affected his romantic life in unexpected ways. He admitted: "I have found that, since the breakdown of my marriage, if I've gone on any dates or started seeing people, when I've had sex with them, I lose interest pretty quickly." "I actually got pretty worried about a year or two ago, because I thought, hang on a minute, I don't remember this from BM, I call it, before marriage." "I don't remember having sex with someone, or orgasming with someone, climaxing, and then after that thinking, 'Oh, I'm just not bothered now'."
