Sipitang folks urge probe on volleyball court renovation

SIPITANG: Kampung Kaban residents want the Youth and Sports Ministry to investigate the renovation of a volleyball court carried out by a contractor which the community claim was done without their consultation or proper authorisation. The situation is further complicated by the location of the renovated court, which sits within the grounds of a church currently under construction that may eventually be demolished. The community's frustration stems not only from the lack of consultation but also from the apparent waste of resources on unnecessary repairs while genuine maintenance needs go unaddressed. Too early to decide on Nick Adams's nomination as US envoy, says Anwar

PUTRAJAYA: Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim says it is premature for the government to decide on whether to approve conservative political commentator Nick Adams as the next US ambassador to Malaysia. Anwar said Putrajaya is following the proper protocol in considering foreign ambassadorial appointments. Advertisement 'It is still too early (to decide),' he told reporters after Friday prayers here. 'Of course, the government will give it due consideration. At the same time, we will maintain good relations between Malaysia and the US.' US president Donald Trump has nominated Adams as Washington's new ambassador to Malaysia. His nomination will need to be confirmed by the US senate before he can assume the role. While no date has been set for the senate vote, Adams is expected to be approved as the Republican-held Senate has backed every Trump nominee since he became president in January. Adams's nomination has faced opposition from former law minister Zaid Ibrahim and former health minister Khairy Jamaluddin, who said Malaysia had every right under the Vienna Convention to reject the appointment without providing a reason. Zaid described Adams as a 'right-wing agitator and partisan provocateur' who is unfit to serve as a US ambassador because of his lack of diplomatic credentials. Adams previously criticised alleged efforts to 'teach Islam in schools'. Known to be a staunch supporter of Israel, he has said that those who expressed solidarity with Palestinians supported terrorism. Selangor PAS Youth chief Sukri Omar said accepting Adams's nomination will be seen as an insult to the country's Muslim community and the Malaysians who support Palestine. Siti Kasim wins suit over unlawful arrest by Jawi officers

Kuala Lumpur: The High Court here has ruled that the Federal Territories Islamic Religious Department (Jawi) and its officers unlawfully arrested and detained lawyer-activist Siti Kasim during a raid on a private fundraising dinner in 2016. Judge Su Tiang Joo said the court was satisfied that Siti had proven her case on a balance of probabilities. Advertisement He affirmed that Siti had been present in her capacity as an assistant advocate when she was arrested at around 10.30pm on April 3, 2016, and held without basis until her release at approximately 2.30am the following day. Su said the religious officers involved had neither the lawful grounds to arrest the plaintiff nor the authority to act on offences under the Penal Code. He then awarded Siti RM160,000 in general and aggravated damages, along with RM100,000 in legal costs. Siti filed the civil suit against Jawi and the government in September 2019, claiming compensation for wrongful arrest and illegal detention. She contended that she suffered 'loss of freedom' for four hours after she was detained by Jawi officers on April 3, 2016 as well as nervous shock, insult and mental anguish. She said she was only carrying out her duty as a lawyer during the raid, and insisted that she had not obstructed the officers from carrying out their duties. Siti was acquitted by the magistrates' court here on Aug 21, 2020, of a charge under Section 186 of the Penal Code for allegedly obstructing Jawi officer Nor Jihan Saleh during the raid, which took place at a transgender beauty pageant event.
