Ellie Carpenter joins Chelsea from Lyon, teaming up with Matildas captain Sam Kerr
The defender, 25, leaves Lyon after a successful five-year stint at the French women's football giant, winning two Champions Leagues.
Carpenter is reuniting with coach Sonia Bompastor, who was in charge of Lyon for those Champions League triumphs, with the duo hoping to add to Chelsea's immense success in the women's game.
Chelsea has won six consecutive English Women's Super League titles, while also claiming the FA Cup and League Cup last season.
"I'm very proud to join such a big club, one of the biggest in women's football," Carpenter said in an interview with the club.
"Chelsea have enjoyed so much success in England, and I'm delighted to now be a part of it."
Carpenter joins Matildas captain Kerr, who has been a stalwart for Chelsea over a number of years.
Kerr has missed a season-and-a-half after sustaining an ACL injury in January of 2024.
Born in Cowra, NSW, Carpenter has achieved more than most despite being just 25 years of age.
She earned her first Matildas cap at the age of 15 and became the youngest ever woman to compete in football at the Olympic Games in Rio, 2016.
She was named Young Footballer of the Year in Australia in 2018, 2019 and 2020, won an A-League premiership and grand final with Melbourne City.
Carpenter has also had a stint in the United States playing for Portland Thorns.
The Australian is now contracted to Chelsea until the end of the 2028-29 season.

Tyson Fury gets green light from his wife to come out of retirement
Tyson Fury could confirm his Anthony Joshua comeback as early as next week. The 35-year-old Gypsy King hung up his gloves for the umpteenth time after his second consecutive loss to Oleksandr Usyk in December. But Joshua's promoter Eddie Hearn has confirmed his star attraction is waiting by the phone for a call and Fury's wife Paris – who lost a baby boy six months into her 2024 pregnancy – has given her man the green light to return. UFC 318: Holloway vs Poirier 3 | SUN 20 JULY 12PM AEST | One of the most iconic careers in MMA history will come to a close, as UFC veteran Dustin Poirier makes his final walk to the Octagon for a trilogy with current BMF Champion Max Holloway. | Order Now with Main Event on Kayo Sports. The undisputed heavyweight decider between Ukraine's unbeaten WBC, WBA and WBO champ Usyk and London's IBF holder Daniel Dubois is taking place at Wembley on July 19. After that four-belt rematch, The Sun reports Fury will be able to weigh up his options and cherry pick his opponent. Speaking at the latest mega-money IBA show in Turkey, Fury revealed: 'Although AJ has been a rival of mine for 10 years, he has been a fantastic advocate for British boxing and has played the game well. 'I wouldn't say I hold all the power over him but if he's only sitting there and waiting for me to come, he could be waiting a long time. 'He might be f***ing 60 by the time I decide I want him – or it might be next week. 'I am looking forward to contemplating the idea of returning. 'I am taking it all on board and I will make a decision in the forthcoming few months.' One thing that could still stand in the way of the biggest all-English fight in British boxing history is Fury's desire for a hometown crack at Usyk, after two desert defeats. 'The all-British fight with Joshua will be big and if we both go to our grave – without having fought each other – it would be a travesty for British boxing,' Fury said. 'But I feel like, what I really want is revenge. 'But I only want to fight Oleksandr Usyk at Wembley, in front of 100,000 people, and lift all the belts. That would be my dream. 'My second dream would be that massive fight with Anthony Joshua. 'I am a prize fighter first and foremost. So, if the money is right, then we can do a deal. If the money is right then it's a deal.' Fury seemed to announce his latest retirement in a hasty rage, from the front seat of his ten-year-old Land Rover Defender on his Morecambe driveway. Nobody expected it to last long and he admitted the itch never showed any sign of leaving him in peace. The 205cm veteran explained: 'Retirement is not easy to handle, every day I wake up and start shadow boxing and inside I want to fight. 'I will never ever get over that because I have been born and bred to do what I do – I mean did! 'It's hard to let it go when it's something I enjoy. It's hard, f***ing hard man. It's hard to walk away from it. 'I have had offers and Paris has said she will support me and that has made me smile. 'It might be because she is sick of me being at home with her, or it's because she is my ride-or-die, we're Bonnie and Clyde.' Fury's childhood sweetheart Paris lost their baby in the build-up to the first Usyk loss in May 2024. Incredibly the mother of seven hid the devastating news from her man so he could focus on the fight. And Fury confirmed that heartbreaking scenario made this latest – albeit predictably brief hiatus – an easy one to enjoy. 'Yes it made retirement a lot easier,' he said. 'The hardest thing for me around that first Usyk fight was that I could not be there, for the person who has been there the most for me in my life, when she needed me the most. 'That was the toughest thing.' Usyk will defend his undisputed heavyweight titles against Dubois, with the fight a rematch of their 2023 bout, where Usyk defeated the Brit by TKO.

Josh Papali'i relishing Maroons' State of Origin recall against Blues in series decider
He has just become a father for the fourth time, but Josh Papali'i was never going to turn down an opportunity to make a State of Origin return for Queensland. The 33-year-old was in hospital with wife Mesepa and baby son Jeremiah when Maroons coach Billy Slater called to ask if he wanted to make a 24th and final Origin appearance. "I missed the first couple of calls because my little fella and my wife were still in hospital at the time and there were a few complications with my little one," Papali'i said. "I spoke to Bill when I had that little break and he asked me one question, if I had one more game in me, and I replied with an 'F-bomb' and said, 'Yes, I had one more left'. "Hopefully I can go out there next week and put on a good performance." Papali'i last played for the Maroons in 2022 and had retired from representative football. He is playing his final season in Canberra this year and has been in career-best form. The Maroons are looking for extra punch in the middle for the Origin decider in Sydney on July 9 and Papali'i was the obvious choice for one last hurrah. "It's definitely my last. I'm obviously just looking forward to it and soaking in the week," Papali'i said. "I'm still buzzing just being back in maroon. I just need to work hard and turn up next week and hopefully perform. "I was happily retired. I was happy to just slug away down in Canberra. We're going pretty well down in the capital as well. "When I saw the first couple of missed calls (from Slater), I just didn't know what to expect. And obviously I spoke to Bill and it's very nice to be back." ABC Sport will have live blog coverage of the State of Origin series. In camp on the Sunshine Coast with the Maroons squad, Papali'i was as refreshed on Thursday as he had ever been in recent times. "It's the best sleep I've had in a few weeks," Papali'i grinned. "Last night was good. I had one of the boys come and wake me up." AAP

Race-by-race tips and preview for Tamworth on Friday
Track soft 7 and rail true. RACE 1 8. Capsity is the only two-year-old in the field, and she makes her debut for the Brett Cavanough stable. A daughter of prolific sprint sire Capitalist, she starts after two progressive 1000m trials, and is bred to thrive on rain-affected ground. 3. Tough Guy is an ex-Victorian three-year-old having his first start for the new home stable, with a string of gear changes in play, and likely to jump a short-priced favourite. Was never far away in three handy efforts down south before spelling, and been tuned up for a strong NSW debut with a solid soft-track trial at Scone. 1. Jagerschnitzel is another one having his first outing for a new Scone yard since transferring from Victoria. Form this prep is very average, but the blinkers come off. Gap to the rest. How to play it: Capsity to win. RACE 2 5. Shamister is an underrated and very fit Dubbo five-year-old that emerges as the one to beat in an average field despite having a poor winning strike rate. Has beaten all but the winner in two of his past three from off the speed, and can settle a bit closer from a softer draw this time, and finish over them. 2. Imezaaki is trained on the course, and right in the hunt third up over the longer trip, with a leading jockey taking over. 7. Libby is still searching for that breakthrough win deep into the prep, but has run home into the placings in her past three, and looking for this longer journey now. 3. Your Temptation, back in grade over further, and 6. Bill Peyto, deep into the campaign, can both add value into exotic plays. How to play it: Shamister to win. RACE 3 7. Yanabah is a progressive and locally trained four-year-old primed to break through fifth up. Has hit the line hard to miss out narrowly in his past two from near the speed and much further back, and has placed five times from nine career runs, often by small margins. Gets enough speed on to settle back and round them up late. 9. Halle Bee is another local, and logical threat fourth up with the leading jockey booked to ride. Has a near 50 per cent place rate from 19 starts. 3. Hardhead is over the odds deep into the prep from a soft draw, while 2. Hanoverian is a market watch resuming for only his second start off two trials. How to play it: Yanabah to win. RACE 4 2. Louisbugh can start the redemption trail here fourth up coming back 100m in trip three weeks between runs. Has been rolled in his last couple as a short-priced favourite on heavy ground, but winkers come off and drawn further out where he settles with more room in the run home are keys to an overdue win. 1. Justice Warrior is a real toiler that has beaten all but the winner in his past two at the provincials, boxing on OK after leading at Wyong last start. This draw and a drop in distance suit. Watch the betting on 4. Snap Decision, a three-year-old son of Proisir in the local Cody Morgan yard, that makes his debut from the inside draw behind an easy trial. Big gap to the remainder headed by 5. Xerxes, which can run into the minor money resuming off a quiet trial. How to play it: Louisburgh to win.
