What should you do if you accidentally hit send on the wrong message?

CBS News01-04-2025
With just a click of the mouse or tap on your phone, many have felt a rush of embarrassment.
Maybe you accidentally hit "reply all" on that email or sent it to the entirely wrong person.
To avoid future awkward moments: What should you do if you accidentally hit send? Good Question.
Your fingers are flying across the keyboard on an email. You even proofread it to be sure before confidently clicking send. Only then do you suddenly see typos, an incorrect date, or that it went to the wrong person.
Amira DeSabatino described the feeling as, "A bit of panic." Her friend Ashley Tagoorpersaud said, "Your heart just sinks into your stomach."
If that mistaken email was sent to a superior at work or a potential job offer.
"It's just like that you want to crawl under your desk and die," said Will Kuhnz.
From email to text message, the "accidental send" is a common mistake, but that doesn't diminish the swift embarrassment it creates.
"It seems like everyone has a fair amount of grace for email," said Kuhnz.
If you find yourself in this position,
employment experts at The Muse
said the first step is to accept the accidental send happened. Ignoring it, or hoping nobody noticed, could make it worse.
Next, acknowledge your mistake to the recipients.
"Sometimes, I have given my boss a heads up before, that 'hey this went out, it had an error in it'," said Kuhnz.
Follow-up emails with apologies and clarifications go a long way, especially when sent out quickly.
Lastly, Kuhnz says move on rather than emotionally attaching to it. Especially early in your career, it's a lesson you have to learn.
In recent years, technology has caught up to our inevitable errors.
Right after clicking send on Gmail, an unsend prompt appears giving users five seconds to snatch the email back. You can increase that grace period to 30 seconds in the settings.
Outlook has a recall feature, but it only works if the recipient is also using Outlook and hasn't opened the email.
If you text with an iPhone, you can unsend the message by pressing it, then selecting "undo send." The recipient will be notified that a message was unsent, however they won't see the initial message. It too has a time limit.
"I love the convenience of it. I wish it had come sooner," said Tagoorpersaud.
Given the constraints of these digital do-overs, take a couple extra seconds to give the message another look before sending it out.
"Super cautious, very intentional, a little bit nervous when I send an email," said DeSabatino of her new habits to avoid mistakes.
"I just make sure I proofread the message and double check the top of my (recipients)," said Jameela Martin.
Others suggested filling in the recipients as the last step of the email writing process.
Facebook Messenger and Instagram also have an unsend feature that deletes messages. Both have a time limit.

Apple (AAPL) Reiterated as Hold by Jefferies Amid iPhone 17 Price Hike Expectations

Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) is one of the On July 30, Jefferies analyst Edison Lee reiterated a Hold rating on the stock with a $188.32 price target According to the analysts, Apple may increase prices for the upcoming iPhone line-up due to strong second-quarter demand and increasing cost pressures. 'We saw more evidence of strong iPhone demand in 2Q25, as key US telcos reported ~22% growth in equipment sales in 2Q driven by pull-in, the highest in the last 6 Qs. So CP/IDC's reported growth (4%/1.5%) may be an under-estimate. Separately, we expect a US$50 selling price hike for iPhone 17 Slim/P/PM to offset higher component costs and China tariff. iPhone just tipped for killer OLED upgrade that could leapfrog Samsung phones

When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. Apple is reportedly considering using tandem OLED technology for future iPhones. That's according to Korean tech website The Elec (via AppleInsider), which cites sources claiming that Apple had spoken with LG Display about a 'simplified tandem OLED' as early as 2024. Apple is allegedly discussing this technology with its other display partner, Samsung Display, for potential use in its smartphones. Tandem OLED tech stacks two OLED panels on top of each other for increased brightness and dynamic range. Since OLED is self-illuminating (i.e., there is no backlight), it allows for thinner panels that are more energy efficient. Apple will use a simplified tandem OLED panel, which is reportedly easier to manufacture since it doesn't double up the pixels, according to the report. However, it still has two layers stacked on top of each other. Regardless, this simplified tandem OLED panel will still have the benefits of the technology, namely a brighter and more energy-efficient display. The Elec reports that Apple hasn't committed to using tandem OLED panels for iPhones, but the company is still in discussions with the aforementioned partners about utilizing the technology. The report claims that Apple might partner with LG Display, but it wants other partners to get on board before moving forward. If this happens, however, we might not see the first tandem OLED iPhone until 2028 at the earliest. It would be interesting if iPhones potentially utilize tandem OLED before Samsung's Galaxy phones, given that the latter is developing tandem OLED panels for cars (via The Elec). So far, we haven't heard anything about Galaxy phones with tandem OLED panels. If Apple beats Samsung to the punch, it would give the company's phones a serious edge over its main competitor. As always with these kinds of reports, take everything written above with a healthy dose of skepticism. That said, The Elec has a decent track record with industry scoops, so we don't want to completely dismiss this latest report. Given how Apple already uses a tandem OLED panel in the iPad Pro M4, it wouldn't be surprising if said technology makes its way to iPhones. If we hear anything more about this, we'll keep you posted! Apple Just Hit a Major iPhone Sales Milestone

If you bought an iPhone in the last three months, it's possible it was the three billionth sold. The brand announced this major sales milestone during its latest earnings call. During the quarter, "we shipped the 3 billionth iPhone since its launch in 2007," said Suhasini Chandramouli, director of investor relations. Samsung is thought to have hit the 3 billion mark last year. A mid-2024 report using IDC data said Samsung sold 2.93 billion phones between Q1 2014 and Q1 2024. However, that didn't take into account sales of the first four generations of the Galaxy S series, or Samsung's handsets sold before its Galaxy range began in 2010. It also doesn't include Samsung phones sold in the last 18 months. Samsung recently said the Galaxy Z Fold 7 had the highest number of preorders ever in the US for one of its Fold-branded phones, and it reports a 25% rise in preorders across these devices compared with the previous generation. Nokia might have also met this target before Apple, but not with smartphones. The Nokia 1100 alone sold 250 million units worldwide, and the Nokia 1110 sold another 248 million. Nokia never released overall sales figures, so it's unclear if the brand ever reached 3 billion. We do know that Nokia sold its billionth handset in 2005. The brand continued until 2013, when it became part of Microsoft and then moved under the HMD Global brand, so it may have hit that 3 billion number without any fanfare. If so, Samsung and Apple are the only two brands to top 3 billion in sales from smartphones alone. Apple also has far fewer devices than Samsung, which has had hundreds of variants, compared with the 47 models from Apple to date. Apple marked the anniversary of its billionth phone sale in July 2016. It then took the brand nine years to gain another 2 billion shipments. In Apple's earnings report, CEO Tim Cook said the brand is in the process of "significantly" increasing its investment in AI. Amid a lackluster response to Apple Intelligence, the company is considering purchasing other AI companies to help it get ahead of its rivals.
