Anwar thanks Malaysians for patience amid efforts to strengthen economy

KUALA LUMPUR, July 24 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has expressed gratitude to Malaysians for their continued patience and support as his administration works to restore the nation's finances and address the lingering effects of past scandals. This comes in the wake of recent revelations by investigative journalists Bradley Hope and Tom Wright, who disclosed that Malaysia's actual losses from the 1MDB scandal could total up to US$18 billion (RM75.9 billion). The prime minister said this figure underscored the scale of the damage inherited by the Madani government. 'From the very first day the prime minister took office at the end of 2022, he remained committed to repairing the country's financial standing so that he can better serve the people,' said the prime minister's senior press secretary, Tunku Nashrul Abaidah, in a livestream today. With the country's financial position now gradually stabilising, Tunku Nashrul said the government has begun rolling out targeted assistance to ease the public's burden amid global economic uncertainties. 'The prime minister said that these measures were made possible only through disciplined governance and improved fiscal space. 'The prime minister also extends his sincere apologies for delays in fulfilling some of the promises made before taking office, as rebuilding trust takes time and deliberate effort. 'Despite constant personal attacks from Opposition figures, including Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor and the Opposition Leader, the prime minister said that insults and mockery on social media won't derail the government's mission to serve the rakyat,' said Tunku Nashrul. The government has recently come under fire for its decision to reduce the RON95 petrol price from RM2.05 to RM1.99, and for providing a one-off RM100 cash assistance to all adult Malaysians. While some Opposition leaders dismissed the move as trivial, Tunku Nashrul said it was a meaningful gesture in line with National Month celebrations — especially as it marks the first time all Malaysians, regardless of background, have received such direct support. He also clarified that the recently announced aid — including the nationwide rollout of Sumbangan Asas Rahmah (SARA) starting 31 August — is not part of Budget 2026, which will only take effect next year. 'Instead, these initiatives are funded through responsible fiscal planning within the scope of Budget 2025. 'These measures are immediate and necessary, aimed at alleviating the cost-of-living pressures faced by the people now. 'Budget 2026, which will be tabled this October, will contain broader allocations for the following year,' said Tunku Nashrul. The Prime Minister's Office has also offered to brief Opposition leaders on basic budgetary principles, for those who may still be unclear about the difference between fiscal assistance and formal budget allocations. 'If there are no interruptions from 'the grasshoppers by the sea' like Sanusi and his allies, InsyaAllah, the Madani government will continue to deliver more prosperity for all Malaysians,' Tunku Nashrul said.

Indian football ‘hurt, scared' as domestic game hits fresh low

NEW DEHLI, July 24 — Former Fifa president Sepp Blatter once called India a 'sleeping giant' of football, but the sport is mired in fresh crisis in the country and faces problems from the top down to grassroots. The men's national team are without a coach and the Indian Super League (ISL) — India's top competition—is in danger of collapsing over a dispute between the federation and its commercial partner. 'Everybody in the Indian football ecosystem is worried, hurt, scared about the uncertainty we are faced with,' Sunil Chhetri, the celebrated veteran striker, wrote on X about the fate of the ISL. The former national skipper unwittingly summed up one of the issues facing Indian football when he came out of international retirement in March aged 40. The striker has 95 goals for his country and is only behind Cristiano Ronaldo (138), Lionel Messi (112) and Ali Daei (108) in the all-time international scoring charts. His best days are well behind him, but with no younger replacements coming through he returned to the national side. India's men are 133rd in the Fifa rankings—their lowest placing in nearly a decade—and have won just one of their last 16 matches. They have never reached the World Cup and Spaniard Manolo Marquez stepped down this month as head coach after just one year and one win in eight games. His last act was to oversee a 1-0 defeat in Asian Cup qualifying to Hong Kong, population 7.5 million to India's 1.4 billion. Disarray The ISL is usually played between September and April. But a rights agreement between the All India Football Federation (AIFF) and Football Sports Development Limited (FSDL), the company which runs the ISL, ends on December 8 and is yet to be renewed. The league is now paralysed ahead of the new campaign and the uncertainty has affected over 5,000 players, coaches, staff and others. National football team director and former captain Subrata Paul is confident the sport in India—a country obsessed with cricket—will come out stronger. 'Indian football, like any growing ecosystem, will face its share of challenges and transitions,' Paul, regarded as one of India's best-ever goalkeepers, told AFP. 'I see this as a time to pause, reflect and refocus. Yes, the recent results and the uncertainty around the ISL are difficult for all of us who love the game, but I see a silver lining as well. 'It's an opportunity to strengthen our foundation by investing in youth development, infrastructure and quality coaching.' The franchise-based ISL started in 2014 as a league that brought global stars including Italy's Alessandro Del Piero to India, and aimed to promote the game in a new avatar. Bur rather than boom, the ISL has seen dwindling TV ratings and falling sponsor interest. Wenger help and hope Football's global bosses have long been keen to tap the potential that India has as the world's most populous country. Arsene Wenger, the former Arsenal manager and now Fifa's chief of global football development, visited in 2023 to inaugurate an academy. AIFF president Kalyan Chaubey—who is also a politician with the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party—last month met Wenger, who has backed India's football development, particularly at grassroots level. Chaubey said Wenger believes starting football at 13 years of age, as is the norm in India, is too late. Players should start by eight, he said. While India have never reached the World Cup and again will be absent in North America next year, there has been modest success in the distant past. India qualified for the Olympics four times between 1948 and 1960. At the 1956 Melbourne Games India came fourth after losing the bronze-medal match to Bulgaria. Blatter in 2007 called India a 'sleeping giant'—but it remains in a deep slumber. 'Own benefit' Football is a distant third in popularity in India after cricket and hockey, with the eastern city of Kolkata and the southern state of Kerala hotspots for the sport. Compounding that, there has long been mismanagement by Indian football chiefs, said veteran sports journalist Jaydeep Basu. 'The fact that the team which was ranked 99 in September 2023 has come down to 133 basically shows poor management,' Basu told AFP. 'There is a caucus working in the AIFF of two or three people who are running the show for their own benefit,' added Basu, who recently authored a book, 'Who stole my football?'. AFP has contacted the AIFF for comment. — AFP

Anwar, govt cleared as court strikes their names from Mukhriz Mahathir's RM5m tax challenge

KUALA LUMPUR, July 24 — Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and the government succeeded today in having their names removed from a judicial review application filed by Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir. Mukhriz is challenging the Inland Revenue Board's (IRB) issuance of additional tax assessment notices for the years 2017 to 2019, demanding payment of over RM5 million. High Court Judge Datuk Amarjeet Singh allowed the application by Anwar, in his capacity as Finance Minister, and the government to strike out their names as respondents in the judicial review proceedings. However, the court dismissed their bid to expunge several paragraphs in Mukhriz's affidavit that made reference to both respondents, and fixed December 16 for the hearing of the substantive judicial review application. On January 2, Judge Amarjeet granted leave for Mukhriz to commence judicial review proceedings, having found that the case raised arguable grounds. Earlier, senior federal counsel Nur Irmawatie Daud, representing both the second and third respondents, argued that the additional assessment notices were issued by the first respondent, the Inland Revenue's chief executive officer or director-general. 'The judicial review application is scandalous, frivolous and an abuse of court process,' she submitted. However, Mukhriz's counsel, Syed Afiq Syed Albakri, contended that the second respondent had influenced the first respondent in the issuance of the said notices against his client. Mukhriz, 60, filed the judicial review application on December 20 last year, naming the IRB's CEO or Director-General, Anwar and the government as the first to third respondents respectively. The businessman sought an order to quash the decision of the first respondent to issue additional assessment notices for the years 2017 to 2019, amounting to RM5,020,707.18, on the grounds that the decision was unlawful and unreasonable. The Pejuang president also sought a declaration that the imposition of penalties under Section 113(2) of the Income Tax Act 1967 was null and void, as well as ultra vires. The former Kedah Menteri Besar further sought a declaration that the second respondent (Anwar) had abused his powers in causing the first respondent (the government) to issue the said notices. Finally, he sought a declaration that the second respondent had similarly abused his powers in directing the issuance of a certificate under subsection 104(1) of the Income Tax Act 1967. — Bernama
