Deepti Sharma on cusp of top spot in T20I rankings following heroics in England
Deepti has been in the top 10 rankings for T20I bowlers for the majority of the last six years, but the 27-year-old has never held the top position despite maintaining great consistency in recent times.
The latest update to the T20I rankings has seen Deepti gain one spot and overtake Australia pacer Annabel Sutherland to regain second place on the rankings, with the right-arm now just eight rating points behind Pakistan's Sadia Iqbal at the top of the rankings, as per ICC.
Deepti earns her latest rise on the back of a three-wicket haul in the third game of India's five-match T20I series against England, and the off-spinner could claim top position from her Pakistan rival with some strong performances over the final two contests in the series. So far in the series, she has six wickets at an average of 14.83.
Teammate Arundhati Reddy is also on the rise, with the seamer gaining 11 places to jump to equal 43rd on the list for T20I bowlers following her own three-wicket haul in the most recent match of the series against England at The Oval.
There were gains for a host of England bowlers too following their narrow five-run triumph at the iconic London venue, with pacers Issy Wong (up three spots to equal 57th) and Lauren Filer (up 21 rungs to equal 68th) the two biggest risers as fellow quick Lauren Bell maintained fourth spot on the rankings.
Australia's Beth Mooney maintains her narrow advantage at the top of the rankings for T20I batters, though there is some change just outside the top 10 following some strong performances from players from England and India in their ongoing series.
India dynamo Jemimah Rodrigues gains two places to move to 12th overall after she contributed a half-century in the second match of the series in Bristol, while openers Danni Wyatt-Hodge and Sophia Dunkley are the big winners from an England perspective following their superb partnership at The Oval. The pair put on 137 for the opening wicket in decent time to help set up England's victory, with Wyatt-Hodge improving three spots to 14th on the T20I batter rankings as a result and Dunkley gaining four places to move to 26th on the same list. Dunkley played a knock of 75 while Danni scored 66, taking his team to a match-winning total of 171/9, which India missed out by five runs.
There are also some gains for England's premier spinner Sophie Ecclestone, who jumps three places to eighth on the list for T20I all-rounders following a career-best contribution of 35 with the bat during the second match of the series in Bristol. (ANI)

'Well done to both teams': Jay Shah as Italy, Netherlands qualify for T20 World Cup 2026
New Delhi [India], July 12 (ANI): International Cricket Council (ICC) chairman Jay Shah lauded Italy and the Netherlands after both teams qualified for the 2026 Men's T20 World Cup. It is scheduled to be hosted in India and Sri Lanka. In a post on X on late Friday evening, Shah said, 'An amazing result for @KNCBcricket and @FedCricket, qualifying for the @ICC Men's @T20WorldCup 2026 through the Europe Qualifier,' Shah wrote. 'For Italy, it will be their first-ever appearance at the tournament that India will defend early next year. Well done to both teams!' While the Netherlands are a familiar face in the global T20 landscape, Italy's qualification marks a significant moment in the nation's cricketing journey, as they prepare to showcase their talent on the world stage. India, the defending champions, will host the tournament along with Sri Lanka in 2026, with the growing list of qualified teams promising a truly global showcase of T20 cricket. The final day of the Europe Qualifiers for the ICC Men's T20 World Cup turned into a roller coaster ride. All four sides, Italy, Netherlands, Scotland and Jersey had an opportunity to confirm their presence in the tournament. Scotland, who have featured in the last four editions of the tournament, hoped to qualify, but their hopes ended on a bitter note after a last-ball defeat against Jersey earlier on Friday. In a must-win battle, Jersey crossed the line on the final delivery of the game and pulled off a stunning win by chasing a 134-run target. Even after pulling off a one-wicket heist, Jersey, who were level with Italy on five points, were knocked out of the race due to Italy's superior net run rate. Italy needed to avoid a heavy defeat, which they managed by stretching their defence from 134/7 to 16.2 overs. After opting to bat, Italy lost their opening pair, Justin Mosca and Emilio Gay, within the first three overs. Italy captain Joe Burns hammered 22 before falling in the seventh over, which reduced them to 41/3. Wicketkeeper-batter Marcus Campopiano's cheap dismissal added to Italy's woes as they tottered on 46/4 in the ninth over. Benjamin Manenti's 27-ball 30 and Grant Stewart's 25(16) helped Italy garner 33 runs in the last three overs, which propelled them to 134/7. In reply, the Netherlands were quick off the blocks and hammered 66/0 in the powerplay. Michael Levitt and Max O'Dowd's 81-run opening stand ended in the eighth over. Crishan Kalugamage removed Levitt's stay on 34(25), but the Dutch side quickly rebounded after captain Scott Edwards forged an unbeaten 64-run stand for the second wicket to see the Netherlands home. As of now, 15 teams have qualified for the T20 World Cup. The Asia EAP qualifier will see three more sides feature in the competition, while two further teams will make it through from the Africa qualifier. Teams qualified for the T20 World Cup 2026: Afghanistan, Australia, Bangladesh, Canada, England, India, Ireland, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa, Sri Lanka, USA, West Indies. (ANI)

Sergio Lobera: Enduring architect of style, success in ISL
New Delhi [India], July 12 (ANI): In the constantly evolving world of the Indian Super League (ISL), where tactics are ever-changing and clubs are in relentless pursuit of the winning formula, one name has consistently risen above, Sergio Lobera. The Spanish tactician has become a symbol of flair, efficiency, and championship success, as per the official website of ISL. With stints at FC Goa, Mumbai City FC, and now Odisha FC, Lobera's name is etched in ISL folklore as not just a successful head coach but as a pioneer who changed the way Indian football is played. Sergio Lobera arrived in India ahead of the 2017-18 ISL season, taking charge of FC Goa. At the time, the club had a solid foundation, but underwhelming results in the previous campaign meant a fresh direction was needed. Lobera entered with a blueprint that was bold, attacking, and heavily inspired by his roots in Spanish football. A former assistant to Tito Vilanova at FC Barcelona, Lobera brought with him the ideals of possession-based football that focused on ball circulation and positional play but while many head coaches spoke about philosophy, Lobera backed it with tangible results. Within weeks, FC Goa were transformed from a solid outfit to arguably the most exciting team in the league. With players like Ferran Corominas, Ahmed Jahouh, and Edu Bedia at the helm, the Gaurs topped the scoring charts for three seasons in a row during Lobera's time in charge. After reaching the semis during the 2017-18 season, Lobera's side reached the ISL final the following season, narrowly losing to Bengaluru FC. But the foundations were firmly in place. In the 2019-20 season, FC Goa finished top of the league to win the Shield, a first in the club's history, and became the first Indian club to qualify for the AFC Champions League group stage. Lobera's ability to work with Indian players was equally important. He helped elevate the games of players like Mandar Rao Dessai, Seriton Fernandes, Brandon Fernandes, and Jackichand Singh, among others, creating a strong domestic core that complemented his foreign stars. FC Goa under Lobera wasn't just a winning team; it was a team fans loved to watch. Despite parting ways with the club just before the playoffs in 2020, Lobera had already cemented his status as a transformative figure in Indian football. If FC Goa was about laying the foundation, Mumbai City FC was where Sergio Lobera proved he could marry style with silverware. Taking charge ahead of the 2020-21 season, Lobera was handed the reins to a revamped Mumbai City FC side. Backed by the City Football Group, he was reunited with several key figures from his FC Goa days, including Hugo Boumous, Mourtada Fall, Ahmed Jahouh, and Mandar Rao Dessai, to name a few. The result was arguably the most dominant ISL campaign in history. Mumbai City FC topped the league table, clinched the Shield and then went on to win the ISL Cup, becoming the first club in ISL history to do the double. What set that team apart was how effective they were at both ends of the pitch. Mumbai City FC played expansive, attacking football, which were hallmarks of Lobera's philosophy, but were also defensively resolute and structured. The Islanders netted a league-high tally of 35 goals that campaign while conceding 18 goals, the second fewest. For Lobera, this was not just redemption for the 2018-19 final loss but also validation. He had now built two top-tier sides in the league and delivered silverware in style. Lobera returned to the league in 2023, this time taking charge of Odisha FC. At the time, Odisha FC proved they were a side with potential but often struggled. They had made the playoffs in 2022-23 but needed to take the next step. Lobera's arrival instantly lifted the club's stature. His first task was to build a team that could compete with the league's best and, more importantly, sustain that level. He once again leaned on familiar lieutenants, Ahmed Jahouh and Mourtada Fall, who followed him to Odisha FC, forming the spine of an experienced squad. In typical Lobera fashion, Odisha FC quickly developed a brand of football that was possession-heavy, attack-minded, and extremely watchable. The club didn't just collect points but began to control matches. The Juggernauts qualified for the playoffs again and this time reached the ISL semi-finals for the first time in their history. The run included an impressive unbeaten stretch at home. There was also a visible improvement in the performances of Indian players like Isak Vanlalruatfela, Jerry Mawihmingthanga, Amey Ranawade, among others. Odisha FC narrowly missed out on the playoffs in the 2024-25 season, marking the first time a Sergio Lobera-coached team failed to qualify for the knockouts. The Kalinga Warriors remained in contention until the very last league game. Their fate, however, rested on Mumbai City FC losing, which didn't go their way. Lobera once again proved that his teams are defined not by standout players but by his philosophy and system, which consistently brings the best out of everyone. Lobera's success in the ISL hasn't been just about silverware, but it has been about doing things with consistency, style, and purpose. Across three different clubs, he's built teams that not only win but play with a clear identity. His philosophy is simple yet effective: control possession, play attacking football, and stay organised. Be it FC Goa, Mumbai City FC, or now Odisha FC - his teams have played with intent and confidence. Lobera has also got the best out of his players, especially Indian talent. From transforming roles to building trust, he's helped many grow under his guidance. At the same time, he's stuck with his tactics, not making adjustments based on the opposition or the situation. His biggest strength is building a strong team culture. Everyone knows their role and there's a clear system in place. And when it has been about rebuilding a squad, Lobera has brought structure and belief. With three different clubs, multiple silverware and a tactical identity that continues to influence others, Lobera's ISL journey has already left a lasting legacy. One of the respected head coaches in the league, the Spaniard has changed the conversation around how Indian clubs should play and given what he has achieved at three different clubs, Lobera's influence will be felt for years to come. Jasprit Bumrah Sends Big Message To Critics After 5-Wicket Haul: 'Sensationalise...'
By his own admission, Jasprit Bumrah is no spring chicken and doesn't have energy to celebrate like a 21-year-old. Instead of overt celebrations, he is creating milestones, one game at a time and saving those stories for his son Angad's grown-up years. Like his 5/74 which will be on the Lord's Honours board following a special spell on day two of the second Test against England. The Indian pace spearhead reached the coveted milestone by castling Jofra Archer but there were no over the top celebrations as one would expect from Bumrah. 'Reality is I was tired. I can't jump around like a 21-year-old. I was happy that I contributed. The name on the Honours board feels good. It is something I can tell my son about when he is grown up,' said Bumrah who had rested from the Edgbaston Test due to workload management. Bumrah once again took a dig at naysayers who question his fitness. "People want to sensationalise for viewership, I understand they want to make money through all that. I am happy that I am helping them do that. Memories are important and want to contribute as much as I can,' said Bumrah. He also said that the conscious decision of not thinking about the famous Lord's slope helped him execute his plans better. 'I thought about the slope on the last tour, it did not help. My lesson from that was not keep that in mind and I got the benefit of that. In these hot conditions, it is all about maximizing the new ball. It was not like that in the previous tour, that has been the major difference,' Bumrah added.
