Bumpy ride for Kolhapur city residents as potholes emerge on major roads

Time of India23-06-2025
Kolhapur: The Kolhapur Municipal Corporation (KMC) has initiated the filling of potholes using 'murum', following development of potholes on various city roads despite the civic body allocating Rs 100 crore towards major road works.
Devkar Panand resident Suresh Chavan said, "The road near my house, from Nikam Park to Tapovan ground, has been in a pathetic condition for six months. Poor roads are increasing vehicle maintenance costs, especially for tires and suspension. If KMC can't fix potholes during monsoon, what were they doing in summer?"
The roads that were recently repaired in front of Rankala Lake near Sandyamath have also deteriorated.
Meenal Patil, a street food joint owner on Rankala Road, said, "The Rankala Lake road was reconstructed just a fortnight ago, and now it's already filled with potholes. With lakhs of tourists visiting the Mahalaxmi Temple and Rankala Lake, these poor road conditions create a negative impression and inconvenience locals.
"
The public works department of KMC said the asphalting work of the roads under the urban development scheme has been stopped owing to the ongoing rain.

"The remaining work is planned after the end of the monsoon season. For now, only the pothole-filling exercise will be carried out with murum," an official said.
A KMC engineer said, "Sixteen roads in the city received a fund of Rs 100 crore under the Maharashtra Suvarna Jayanti Nagarutthan Yojana. Of these, works on 13 roads have been completed to about 70%. The work on the remaining three roads is pending because of land acquisition and other technical issues. Several roads in the city were dug up for gas and water pipelines. Since the monsoon began, the potholes in the roads will have to be filled with murum, and asphalting will be done only after the monsoon ends.

EV charging points must for all new housing societies

Lucknow: All new group housing projects in Lucknow will now have to reserve 20% of their parking space exclusively for electric vehicles. Charging points and required infrastructure must be provided in these designated slots. This provision is part of the revised building bylaws being implemented under Awas Bandhu, aimed at integrating EV infrastructure into the city's residential developments. "This step is intended to encourage low-emission transport and support the shift towards sustainable mobility," said a senior Lucknow Development Authority (LDA) official. Moreover, the LDA is preparing to launch a series of residential projects in Gomti Nagar, Aishbagh and Basant Kunj. The scale and configuration of these projects will be based on responses to an online demand survey that remains open until July 31, 2025. Designs are being revised to prioritise better cross-ventilation and reduce dependency on air conditioning. Floor plans will include larger kitchens, washrooms and balconies, and more structured green zones will be included in each housing complex. LDA chairperson and divisional commissioner Roshan Jacob recently reviewed these housing proposals and directed officials to make the designs more functional and resident-friendly. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like You might be interested in the content above Undo According to LDA vice-chairperson Prathamesh Kumar, the identified plots include 4.5 acres in Viraj Khand (Gomti Nagar), 3.5 acres near Rapti Apartments (Gomti Nagar Extension), 4.65 acres on Mill Road (Aishbagh), and 3.7 acres in Sector-J (Basant Kunj), all with access to schools, hospitals and public transport. The upcoming units will offer 2BHK and 3BHK options with improved layouts, provision for natural airflow, and dedicated drying spaces. Each site will include common facilities like lifts, parking, water systems, gym, pool, yoga space, children's play area and clubhouse. Officials have been instructed to keep the pricing below current private-sector rates and to increase the tree cover. Site plans for Varun Vihar (Agra Expressway) and Naimish Nagar (Sitapur Road) were also reviewed, with instructions to incorporate mixed-use elements—residential, commercial, and logistics—to align with regional growth.

Gandhi Bazaar's Rs 22-crore parking facility awaits inauguration in Bengaluru

Bengaluru: The long-awaited multi-level car parking facility at Gandhi Bazaar in Chickpet is now complete and ready for public use. Constructed under the Bengaluru Smart City initiative at a cost of Rs 22 crore, the facility includes retail and parking infrastructure to ease congestion in one of the city's busiest commercial areas. BBMP chief commissioner Maheshwar Rao directed officials to expedite the opening of the facility. "We must now finalise a date for the deputy chief minister DK Shivakumar to inaugurate the facility and open it to public at the earliest," said Rao, who was overseeing inspections across the south zone. The four-storey structure includes 50 commercial shops on the basement and ground floor and dedicated parking for 124 vehicles across the upper four levels, with each floor accommodating 31 cars. The facility is equipped with a lift, six toilets, staircases, and a tensile roof canopy on the terrace. MACT orders 1.8 cr payout to accident victims' kin

Mumbai: A Motor Accident Claims Tribunal (MACT) has ordered a payout of over Rs 1.4 crore to the family of Mulund-based marketing manager Mehul Thakkar, who died in a car crash in June 2019. The family of another deceased victim, Harshida Davda, will receive around Rs 38 lakh, and Davda's husband, Bharat Davda, was also awarded compensation of around Rs 4.5 lakh for the injuries suffered in the same accident. MACT ruled that Bhauben Thakkar, owner of the vehicle involved, and her insurance company, Reliance General Ins Co Ltd, must jointly pay the compensation. Mehul's wife, who was in the car too, deposed before the tribunal. A criminal case was also registered against the driver for causing death by negligence. The company initially disputed the claim, arguing that the accident didn't happen as described, and that the driver wasn't negligent or didn't have a valid license. "The company has not challenged the chargesheet and there is no substance in the contention raised by the company proving that the driver of the offending vehicle was rash driving at a high speed and was solely responsible for the accident." the tribunal said. Considering the victims' age at the time of death, MACT included their potential future earnings and the family's financial losses due to untimely death for compensation.
