MIAMI GARDENS ― Miami Dolphins rookie Jonah Savaiinaea will wear No. 72, last worn by future Hall of Famer Terron Armstead.
"Just being able to wear that and knowing that a legend wore it before me, that's something I'm not gonna take it lightly," Savaiinaea said Friday, the first day of Dolphins rookie minicamp. "So I've got big shoes to fill."

Savaiinaea was reminded 1972 is the year of Miami's perfect season.
"All right, there we go," Savaiinaea said.
Savaiinaea was the only one of the eight Dolphins rookies not to sign their initial contract before camp. But that's not a big deal.
There are no longer rookie holdouts in the NFL. Soon enough, Savaiinaea, who attended the University of Arizona, will sign a contract for a slotted number collectively bargained by the league and union.
Unsigned rookies can still participate in camp.
"This is like a dream come true, you know, just being in a league, just knowing that, you know, this is a job now for you, you know, it's not like a regular practice, you know, you're here to take someone's job," Savaiinaea said.

Savaiinaea, 6-foot-5, 336 pounds, appeared more trim than expected.

That should be a bonus in an offense that leans on footwork and mobility.
Savaiinaea was impressed by the Dolphins' top-notch facilities.
He noted the team meeting rooms, the players' lounge, the locker room, the training room and even... the bathrooms.
"Really nice," he said.
Miami Dolphins rookie Jonah Savaiinaea made his minicamp practice debut on Friday, May 9.
One thing Savaiinaea hasn't even thought about is where he might live. At the beach? Near the beach? Inland?
"As of right now, that's not really my focus right now," he said. "I'm at the hotel, and I'm really focusing on working. Again, I'm a rookie. I'm still trying to prove myself and just getting to know the playbook."

Savaiinaea knows why he's here. He knows why the Dolphins traded up in the second round to secure him.

"We wanna run the damn ball," he said. "We know that they know we're running the ball. So we're just gonna line up and then we're gonna push that, create that new line of scrimmage. And we're just gonna move it. Move people."
Rookie minicamp typically last three days.
What is Savaiinaea's goal?
"I haven't done anything yet," Savaiinaea said. "So obviously I'm trying to like prove myself to the vets that they can count on me. First earning their trust because they don't care if you're drafted or undrafted or you just got signed. They want to see you putting in that winning mentality. Here, we want guys that that want to win. So just being able to be a sponge."

The 35-year-old singer-songwriter attended some of the events that took place at Tight End University with her longtime boyfriend, Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce. The Grammy-winning singer also went to the "Tight End & Friends" benefit concert on Tuesday evening at Nashville's Brooklyn Bowl, where she even held a last-minute performance of her hit song "Shake It Off." To celebrate the end of a successful week, Kittle posted a photo dump on his Instagram on Friday afternoon, featuring multiple pictures and videos taken throughout the week with his fellow tight ends and friends. Former NFL RB LeSean McCoy rips Steelers legend Ben Roethlisberger for lack of success

Earlier in the week, former Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger offered up an interesting comparison between quarterbacks Aaron Rodgers and Patrick Mahomes. Roethlisberger said that prime Aaron Rodgers was better than current Patrick Mahomes is. Not the most controversial opinion but it definitely got former NFL running back LeSean McCoy stirred up. McCoy decided to vent about Roethlisberger and his hot take on the FS1 show, The Facility. According to McCoy, "Big Ben hates." McCoy noted that in 18 NFL seasons, Roethlisberger was never named an All-Pro and was never once in his career considered the best or even second-best quarterback in the NFL. Both of these are fair points. Roethlisberger was never a big statistical quarterback in his career. He only led the NFL in passing yards twice, and unfortunately, when you shared the league with guys like Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, Aaron Rodgers, and Drew Brees, among others, you couldn't get much traction from the national media when your team wins but you don't put up huge numbers. But what Roethlisberger did was win. And elevate the play of his teammates. Roethlisberger was 165-81-1 as a starter in 18 years and led the Steelers to two Super Bowl championships. McCoy also has two Super Bowl titles, both late in his career when he was largely a backup and just moving from team to team. If I want an opinion on a quarterback, I'm taking Roethlisberger over McCoy every time.

Buccaneers' Baker Mayfield Was Better Last Season In One Key Passing Stat

Buccaneers' Baker Mayfield Was Better Last Season In One Key Passing Stat originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield has completely turned his career trajectory around since arriving in town ahead of the 2023 season. Advertisement Replacing legend and seven-time Super Bowl Champion Tom Brady is no easy proposition, but Mayfield's transition in Tampa Bay has been seamless. Posting two career seasons since being signed by general manager Jason Licht, Mayfield has helped the Bucs to a record-tying four straight NFC South titles and five playoff appearances in a row. But last season, we saw a part of Baker's game improve that might not have been anticipated. Pro Football Focus measured each quarterback's release rate last season, and Mayfield proved to have the third-most attempts in the league in releasing the ball in under 2.5 seconds. "Baker Mayfield's transition in Tampa Bay is a prime example, as his time to throw has decreased over the past two seasons compared to his previous three, resulting in increased production," Mason Cameron wrote. "This past season, Mayfield recorded 335 attempts in under 2.5 seconds — more than in any season he played outside of Tampa. He posted an 85.8% adjusted completion percentage and 29 touchdowns on such plays in 2024, both of which led the NFL." Advertisement Mayfield has been named to the Pro Bowl for the first and second times in his career since joining the Bucs. In 2023, he posted career highs in yards (4,044), touchdowns (28) and completion percentage (64.3). That earned him a three-year, $100 million deal from Licht and the team, and last season, he bested those career numbers by a lot with 4,500 yards, 41 touchdowns and a 71.4 completion percentage. Baker has built on the previous year each season with the Bucs, and that trend could continue in 2025.
