Police Minister Senzo Mchunu faces criminal charges over Lt-Gen Mkhwanazi's explosive claims

A dark cloud continues to hang over Police Minister Senzo Mchunu, as he now faces criminal charges against him over explosive allegations of misconduct and interference in police operations by KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi.
The DA announced it will lay charges on Thursday at the Cape Town Central Police Station.
The party's Deputy Chief Whip, Baxolile Nodada; justice spokesperson Glynnis Breytenbach; intelligence spokesperson Dianne Kohler Barnard, and deputy police spokesperson Lisa Schickerling are expected to lead the charge and address the media afterward.
The DA has accused Mchunu of misleading Parliament earlier this year when he told the Portfolio Committee on Police that he did not know North West businessman Brown Mogotsi.
Mogotsi has since been implicated in alleged political interference in police operations by Mkhwanazi.
Mchunu has now admitted, four months after his denial, that he does, in fact, know Mogotsi, but only 'as a comrade.'
This comes after he told Parliament on March 5 that he doesn't know Mogotsi.
'I don't know this person,' he said in reference to Mogotsi.

He claimed then that he had been shown a photo of the man after reports emerged that someone was falsely claiming to be associated with him, but he denied recognising the individual.
However, in a statement issued on Wednesday, Mchunu said he had met Mogotsi but downplayed the relationship.
'Whilst the minister knows and has met Mogotsi, he is just a comrade and not an associate of the minister. The minister has never requested or received anything from him,' the statement read.
The admission follows damning allegations by Mkhwanazi, who claimed Mchunu and other senior police leaders are linked to a criminal syndicate with ties to drug cartels and politically connected figures.
Mkhwanazi accused Mchunu of lying about his relationship with Mogotsi and colluding to protect influential individuals from prosecution.
Speaking to the police portfolio committee in March, Mchunu said: 'I think I picked up something that Provincial Commissioner Mkhwanazi is saying about some fellow. Two weeks ago, I got somebody insisting that somebody was going around saying he works with me wherever I am, he is there. I said, 'Show me the face.' And it got to a point where he showed me his face and I told him, 'I don't know this person.''
Mchunu, however, clarified that although he knows Mogotsi, they are not close and have no transactional relationship.
The controversy also involves murder-accused businessman Vusimuzi Matlala.

'Ms Mgwaba, a Black woman and grandmother, was subjected to a deeply traumatic and targeted act of aggression in 2020 when Trappler slashed her car tyres, made threatening remarks, and asserted that Black people did not belong in the neighbourhood,' he said. 'Initially, the case was dismissed despite the existence of CCTV footage showing Trappler approaching the car multiple times and crouching by the tyres before they visibly deflated. Public outcry resulted in the NPA reviewing the case and making a decision, based on the CCTV evidence, to reinstate the charges,' Sayed said. He further called for action to be taken against the SAPS and NPA for refusing and denying Mgwaba justice. The ANC has further called for the blacklisting of Trappler in the legal fraternity. Sayed said the party commended Magistrate Stephen Bengequla for his clear and principled ruling, and noted his decision to refer the matter to the Equality Court to determine whether the crime was racially motivated. He said they believe this is a necessary and just step. 'This case highlights not only the persistence of racism in our communities, but also the need for vigilance in how our justice system responds to such incidents. eThekwini responds to DA's claim about flood victims as 'political grandstanding'
DURBAN - The eThekwini Metro Municipality has responded to claims by the Democratic Alliance (DA) that it failed to take responsibility when flood victims were evicted from their temporary residence. At least 150 people were left stranded when the Bayside Hotel threw them out on the street over the delayed payment of R128 million by government. The DA has called on the SA Human Rights Commission and Public Protector to investigate human rights violations, citing the municipality's account for the eviction. The metro has refuted the claims accusing the DA of playing politics. Last week, when the flood victims were left destitute, Human Settlement MEC Siboniso Duma went to Gauteng to meet the ministry to resolve the matter. This was followed by a R30 million purchase of the Montclair Lodge to house the flood victims. Despite this intervention, the DA said the metro should have acted first since the victims are residents of eThekwini. DA eThekwini caucus leader, Thabani Mthethwa, said, 'Whether those people were put in there by the national or provincial government, as part of the District Development Model the Municipality should have taken responsibility in making sure that they are taken care of.' Meanwhile city spokesperson Gugu Sisilana said, 'The actions of reporting the Bayside Hotel evictions of the flood victims to the Human Rights Commission and the Public Protector is an exercise in futility, and desperate political grandstanding because the matter relating to the dignified resettlement of flood victims has been sufficiently dealt with by all spheres of government.'

Religious leaders, political parties unite against gang violence
A meeting was hosted this week by the Muslim Judicial Council with the South African Police Services Western Cape leadership and various civil society and public representatives from the community to seek collective solutions to the violence ravaging the Cape Flats and surrounding areas. Image: Supplied The Muslim Judicial Council (MJC) has called for a transparent plan of action to secure the safety and wellbeing of gang and violence ridden communities in Cape Town, following a meeting with various stakeholders on Monday. The most recent incident of violence saw a mass killing in Bishop Lavis on Friday night which claimed the lives of four people. Recent weeks have seen a surge in mass shootings wreaking havoc in areas across the city, including in Mitchells Plain, Kraaifontein, Mfuleni, and Lower Crossroads. MJC president, Sheikh Riad Fataar said they called the meeting in their capacity as a senior religious authority and civil society stakeholder. The purpose of the meeting was to initiate 'meaningful deliberations on the immediate and coordinated implementation of solutions'. Attendees expressed optimism about the way forward. National Coloured Congress (NCC) leader Fadiel Adams said: 'I'm optimistic. I think it's about time our religious fraternity and all faiths come together and stand with us, as parents and as activists. I believe we can come up with something that truly benefits our kids.' He added that meaningful dialogue about how sectors like sport, social development, and education can be brought into the fold were necessary. ANC leader of the opposition in the provincial legislature, Khalid Sayed said it was a very constructive meeting where practical ideas were put forward to police in the province. 'The one focus being for greater police visibility and actual boots on the ground in crime-ridden areas. Also to make sure there's greater cooperation. "The other thing that came through which Saps agreed with, was for faith leaders need to be called upon. (Saps) must feel free to walk hand in hand with religious leaders in communities because it's at the community level where religious leaders are active. Whether it be in the mosques or churches, where youngsters who are going into this type of criminality where, their families are at. "The strengthening and vetting of CPFs also needs to happen. Another big aspect was that tackling crime in our communities is not just an issue of policing and boots on the ground. It requires all spheres of government. It requires the social and economic aspects to also be in place. All spheres of society and government must work together to ensure young people have alternatives. From our side, we need to ensure that the necessary oversight must take place to ensure Saps and government implement what they are committing when they have meetings such as this,' Sayed said.
