Residents want DBKL to make repairs, speed up utility mapping
CHERAS residents are urging the authorities to speed up a utility mapping study in their area, citing concerns about sinkholes.
They are calling on Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) to act quickly after noticing at least two new cases of ground subsidence near an initial sinkhole site at the intersection of Jalan Selar and Jalan Selangat in Taman Pertama.
The incident led to the closure of parts of both roads as well as Jalan Semerah Padi for public safety.
Although the affected roads reopened in May, the site remains closed for ongoing monitoring.
Resident Sukhdev Singh Cheema, who lives in nearby Taman Cantik, said one case of subsidence was seen at the junction of Jalan Selar and Jalan Seno­hong 1, less than 100m from an earlier sinkhole.
'The interlocking bricks are visibly sinking and it's getting worse,' he said, adding that another depression had appeared at a corner of Jalan Selangat, which residents believe was covered up earlier this week.
'That spot has caved in several times over the past five years.
'It was repaired each time but keeps recurring,' he said after a site visit.

Also at the location were DBKL officers from the Civil Engineering and Drainage Department, residents and a representative from Cheras MP Tan Kok Wai's office.
Sukhdev, a member of Cheras Federal Territories Residents Representative Coun­cil (MPPWP) for sub-zone 3, said a thorough study of the underground system was necessary given the repeated incidents.
He also pointed out that the area served as a key access route for residents from five neighbourhoods.
'With the constant high traffic here, we need to be sure it is safe.'
Taman Cantik resident Lee Cheok Seng said the current road condition along Jalan Selar was dangerous to motorists.
'The uneven surface can damage vehicle undercarriages and it is especially hazardous for motorcyclists.
'There are also inadequate hazard lights marking the cordoned-off area,' he said.
A DBKL spokesperson said it would take note of residents' concerns and carry out further investigations.
StarMetro previously reported that DBKL's initial checks at the site indicated the sinkhole was not caused by pipe leaks, such as water or sewerage lines.
It said further investigations were focused on the underground drainage system, particularly a box culvert located 7m beneath the road.
Inspections using drone technology and aerial Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR), the authority said, had reportedly revealed damage to the culvert, which was identified as the cause of soil erosion and cavity formation in the surrounding area.
Repair works are expected to take between three and six months, depending on the method chosen.
The authority also said that permanent repair of the box culvert structure would be carried out without the need to excavate the road surface, to minimise disruption.

A pedestrian on a stretch of the walkway along Jalan Tun Razak that is partially blocked from motorists' view by an elevated slip road next to it. A DIRTY and unlit walkway along Jalan Tun Razak, Kuala Lumpur, is sparking safety concerns among regular users. Elena Mei Yun said a portion of the walkway was not visible to motorists on Jalan Tun Razak as it was blocked by an elevated slip road connected to the Kampung Pandan roundabout. 'The dirty condition and lack of lights at that stretch makes it dark, creepy and prone to unsavoury elements,' she said. Mei, who takes the path to work, added: 'I usually use that stretch of walkway before 7am. 'It is still quite dark then, so I am fearful of getting robbed.' During a recent visit, StarMetro observed that the walkway was littered with leaves, while the stretch blocked from view by the elevated slip road was also quite narrow. Mei said she lodged a complaint with Solid Waste Management and Public Cleansing Corporation (SWCorp) on June 4, requesting the agency clean the walkway. 'Alam Flora Sdn Bhd, the concession company under SWCorp which is responsible for public cleansing work in Kuala Lumpur, then called me to explain that cleaning work for the walkway was not under Kuala Lumpur City Hall's (DBKL) jurisdiction as the highway concessionaire had not surrendered that portion to DBKL,' she said. In a separate email response to Mei, SWCorp reiterated that as the cleaning job for the walkway had not been handed over, the agency was not authorised to work on the area. Mei added that she had also lodged a complaint with DBKL about the problem, but was told the same thing – that the highway concessionaire had not surrendered the walkway to them. 'The walkway needs to be cleaned up regularly and made more pedestrian-friendly. 'Street lights should also be installed for pedestrian safety,' she said. Meanwhile, Bike Commute Malaysia director Justin Lee said the walkway was open and clean in 2018 when the elevated slip road was still under construction, citing images captured by Google Maps at the time. 'Like many flyovers that have been introduced recently, pedestrian space is not considered. 'In this case, pedestrian safety and accessibility are compromised when the walkway is squeezed beside the flyover, which should not have been built alongside walkways,' he said. Lee called for a guideline to clearly outline the minimum requirements for pedestrian walkways so future projects do not compromise such infrastructure. StarMetro reached out to DBKL and SWCorp for comments, but neither provided a response at press time.

The site of the proposed 27-storey condominium at Jalan Penchala Indah, Kampung Bukit Lanjan, in the centre with ongoing construction of the 35-storey project on the left. — SAMUEL ONG/The Star RESIDENTS of Kampung Bukit Lanjan, Kuala Lumpur and surrounding neighbourhoods are objecting to a proposed 27-storey apartment project at Lot 3119 Jalan Penchala Indah. This marks the second time in recent years the community has opposed a hillside construction in the area. Next to the proposed site, situated on Malay reserve land, is a 35-storey project under construction. The latest high-rise came to light in January when a public notice was placed at the site. Residents claimed they have not been officially informed and learned about it only during their daily commute. Mohamed Ali: There have been two landslides not far from the site. According to the notice, the development will have 154 units. The site is located on a narrow, elevated section of Jalan Pen­chala Indah, just uphill from Residensi The Trees and Resi­densi Armani. Objections have been filed by residents of Residensi The Trees, Residensi Armani, Kampung Bukit Lanjan and heritage advocacy group Anak Jati Penchala. Each group submitted petitions to Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) and Segambut MP's office and issued a joint statement on May 10. 'There have already been two landslides this year not far from where the site is,' said Kampung Bukit Lanjan resident Mohamed Ali Noordin. He said the authorities should prioritise preserving the area's character. 'Kampung Bukit Lanjan is one of the last Malay reserve areas in the city,' he told StarMetro, adding that road infrastructure was already at breaking point. 'Almost every single high-rise project has the issue of cars parked outside because there are not enough parking bays. Abdul Halim is disappointed with DBKL's lack of engagement with residents. In their joint statement, the four groups cited inconsistencies with Kuala Lumpur Structure Plan 2040 (KLSP 2040), as well as flood and landslide risks, road capacity issues and erosion of the village's identity. 'It is clearly stated in the plan that village areas and existing communities should be safeguarded,' said Residensi The Trees Management Corporation chairman Mohamad Sazali Samjis. 'Even without the proposed construction, the infrastructure is struggling, the drainage system cannot keep up with the volume of rainfall,' said Sazali. A public engagement session on May 11 was held by a consul­tant appointed by the developer, but residents said DBKL officials were not present. 'Every resident who attended the meeting strongly objected to the project,' said Kampung Bukit Lanjan Residents Association chairman Abdul Halim Halid. Minutes of the meeting, he said, has yet to be shared. 'They said they would circulate the minutes, but it has been a month and we have received nothing.' He expressed disappointment with DBKL's lack of engagement with residents. Abdul Halim noted that the project notice listed no identifiable name of the developer. DBKL had not responded to StarMetro's queries at press time.
