Mizoram: Two women among five arrested, heroin seized
Aizawl, Aug 1 (PTI) Five people, including two women, have been arrested in connection with the seizure of heroin in three separate operations, police said.
Champhai Police intercepted an Aizawl-bound taxi at Khankawn check gate in Champhai and seized 364 gm of heroin worth Rs 10.92 lakh on Thursday, police said.
The taxi driver, identified as C Zoramhluna (29), a resident of Biate village and presently residing in Aizawl's Chaltlang Lily Veng locality, and his passengers Lalnunzira (34) and Lalthanmawia (30), both from Chaltlang Lily Veng, were arrested in connection with the seizure, they said.
Zoramhluna revealed to the police that he had come to Champhai to receive the contraband for delivery to some persons in Aizawl, police said.
All five accused were booked under sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act 1985. PTI CORR ACD

Kerala man held while celebrating theft at Tasmac outlet
A 43-year-old man from Kerala was arrested from a Tasmac outlet near Coimbatore railway station when he was celebrating the theft of valuables belonging to a passenger on Sunday. Syeed Ahammed Mubeen, who hails from Vellayil in Kozhikode, was arrested by a joint team of the Railway Protection Force (RPF), its Crime Intelligence Branch (CIB) - Salem and the Government Railway Police (GRP). According to the RPF, S. Vijay Nagaraj, 41, from Cromepet in Chennai complained that his shoulder bag containing laptop and a few other items went missing when a Chennai-bound train he travelled departed from Coimbatore station around 5.40 p.m. on Sunday. A joint RPF, CIB Salem and GRP swiftly acted and apprehended Mubeen, who went to a Tasmac outlet close to the railway station, after the theft. He was found with a black shoulder bag containing a laptop valued ₹3 lakh, an earbud priced ₹38,000, driving licence and registration certificate belonging to the complainant. When questioned, he admitted to having stolen the bag of the passenger. He went to the Tasmac outlet to celebrate the successful theft. The accused was brought to the GRP station, Coimbatore, where a case was registered against him. He was arrested and produced before the Sixth Judicial Magistrate and remanded in judicial custody.

A disturbing video of a man killing a cat and sharing the footage on Instagram has triggered outrage in Kerala, prompting a police investigation. The accused has been identified as Shajeer, a lorry driver from Cherpulassery in Palakkad district. The video, posted as an Instagram Story from the account 'Shajeer_Tool', first showed the cat being fed. What followed was far more horrifying as another clip showing the cat's head and body parts separated was uploaded. As the footage circulated on social media, users flagged it to the police. Cherpulassery police have launched a probe and are verifying the authenticity of the video. Preliminary findings suggest Shajeer is currently in Tamil Nadu. The police are trying to trace his exact location. According to Kerala Kaumudi, when questioned informally about the act, Shajeer allegedly said, 'Cat meat tastes better than human meat." Authorities are still trying to establish where the video was filmed. The incident has sparked widespread condemnation. Under Section 325 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, killing or maiming an animal is a punishable offence. The new law, part of the overhaul that replaced the Indian Penal Code, clearly states that anyone who kills, poisons, or renders an animal useless can face up to five years in jail, a fine, or both. The act may also attract charges under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960, which lays down additional penalties for causing unnecessary pain or suffering to animals. While extreme cases of consuming pets are rare in India, this is not an isolated incident. In Chennai, residents in July 2025 sounded the alarm over a group of youths from the Narikorava community allegedly trapping and killing residential cats for meat, later selling it to roadside eateries as chicken or mutton biryani, according to a report by the Times Of India. High court asks accused in cheating case with Navjot Sidhu's wife to deposit passport and participate in mediation
CHANDIGARH: The Punjab and Haryana High Court on Monday asked , who is facing criminal cases for allegedly duping cricketer-turned-political leader Navjot Singh Sidhu's wife, , to deposit his passport with the investigating officer upon arrival from Dubai. Justice Tribhuvan Dahiya passed these orders while hearing a petition filed by the accused, Gagandeep Singh. During the hearing of the case on Monday, counsels representing Navjot Kaur and Gagandeep Singh informed the bench that the disputes between them could be settled by way of mediation, and for this purpose, the parties may be referred to the Mediation and Conciliation Centre of the Court. The bench accepted their request and referred the matter for mediation. 'Parties through their counsel are directed to appear before the Mediation and Conciliation Centre on August 12. In the meanwhile, the petitioner (Gagandeep Singh) will not be arrested to facilitate his participation in the mediation proceedings. He shall deposit his passport with the investigating officer on arriving in the country,' the HC ordered. As per the FIR, registered in October 2024 at Patiala, former MLA Navjot Kaur came into contact with Gagandeep Singh, alias Prince, who introduced himself as a partner of Ms Space Builders and Promoters and OTH Builders and Promoters, allegedly involved in real estate projects across Mohali and Zirakpur. Gagandeep allegedly gave assurances of high returns while asking the complainant for investment in some real estate projects. On this, Navjot Kaur and her relatives allegedly invested around Rs 10.35 crores through bank transfers as well as cash into the real estate venture represented by Gagandeep. Later, the returns were delayed, and the cheques issued by Gagandeep to refund money were dishonoured. On Navjot Kaur's complaint, an FIR was registered in Patiala. The accused approached the High Court for bail.
