Bengaluru's famed restaurant chain, Empire, is under fire after its chicken kebabs from the Gandhinagar outlet were found to be unsafe for consumption, according to a report by NDTV. Bengaluru's popular Empire kebabs fail the safety test by food department. (Pexels)
Kebabs failed to to comply with the safety norms
The controversy erupted after the State Food Laboratory at the Public Health Institute tested food samples collected during a routine inspection by Food Safety Officer Ambarish Gowda on June 27. Gowda had collected four 500-gram packets, totalling 2 kilograms, of chicken kebabs from Empire's Anand Rao Circle branch.

According to the lab report dated July 11, the kebabs failed to comply with the safety norms outlined in the Food Product Standards & Food Additives Regulations, 2011. As a result, the food was officially deemed 'unsafe for human consumption' under provisions of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.
Following this, the BBMP's Food Safety and Drug Administration (North Zone) issued a formal notice to the outlet, giving it 30 days to respond to the findings. The restaurant has also been informed of its right to seek a second round of testing at the Central Food Technological Research Institute (CFTRI) in Mysuru, at its own cost.

Responding to the situation, Empire Group CEO Shakir told NDTV, 'We have received the notice from FSSAI. While we won't be commenting on the specific details of the case, I can confirm that we have discontinued the use of food colouring in our kebabs. We always make sure that our quality is never compromised under any circumstances'
The food safety violation has sparked concern given the restaurant's popularity across Bengaluru, especially for its late-night dining options and signature kebabs.

"Great Relief": Uma Bharati Applauds Malegaon Blast Verdict

New Delhi: Former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister and senior BJP leader Uma Bharati said the verdict in the Malegaon case was a "great relief" to her. All seven accused in the 17-year-old case were acquitted today by a special court. The judge said the prosecution failed to prove the allegations in the case and that all seven accused deserve the benefit of doubt. "My reverence to the people because they were the ones to face any torture or physical pain but they were not ready to give the names," Uma Bharati told NDTV in an exclusive interview. "They were forced to name the people of some right wing organisation, some BJP leaders. It is because of the torture they faced and ultimately they tolerated it... The whole country, the whole Hindu community, the whole organisation now honours them. We worship them," she added. During the years-long trial, the prosecution had examined 323 witnesses, of whom nearly 40 turned hostile. Pointing to the discrepancies in the evidence, the court said terrorism has no religion, but it cannot convict on mere perception. Uma Bharati slammed those who suspected the right wing of involvement in the blasts. More Muslims stayed back in India than the number that went to Pakistan, because they trusted the Hindus. Now they were blaming the Hindus for the Malegaon blast. "They should be ashamed and they should apologise," she said. The blast occurred on the night of September 29 2008, near Bhikku Chowk in the communally tense town, located about 200 km from Mumbai, during the holy month of Ramzan. A powerful bomb tore through an area near a mosque, killing six people and injuring more than a hundred. Today, all seven accused in the case, including former BJP MP Pragya Thakur and former army officer Lt Col Prasad Shrikant Purohit, were acquitted.

'Ok, Leave Rs 150, But At Least Return My Rs 750': Malegaon Blast Accused To Court

During the court hearing, Kulkarni stated that Rs 900 was confiscated from him at the time of his arrest, but only Rs 750 was officially recorded Sameer Kulkarni, one of the seven individuals acquitted in the 2008 Malegaon blast case, made an unusual request in court, he asked for his Rs 750, confiscated during his arrest, to be returned. During the court hearing, Kulkarni stated that Rs 900 was confiscated from him at the time of his arrest, but only Rs 750 was officially recorded. 'During the arrest, Rs 900 was confiscated from me, but only Rs 750 was shown on paper. Ok, leave Rs 150, but at least return my Rs 750," he told the court. The presiding judge noted the request but reminded him that court directives forbid the return of any case property until further orders. Though Kulkarni is now free, he must wait for the official clearance to retrieve the amount, NDTV reported. Kulkarni also asked for permission to raise nationalist slogans such as 'Bharat Mata Ki Jai" for three seconds, but the court declined, citing the need to maintain discipline in court proceedings. About Malegaon Blast Case Seventeen years after the Malegaon blast killed six people and injured more than 100, a special court in Mumbai on Thursday acquitted all seven accused, including former BJP MP Pragya Singh Thakur and Lt Col Prasad Purohit, declaring a lack of 'reliable and cogent evidence." The court sated, 'Terrorism has no religion" and warned against convictions based on perception alone. Additionally, the court awarded compensation under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act: Rs 2 lakh each to the six victims' families and Rs 50,000 to each of the injured 101 individuals. The father of the youngest victim, 10-year-old Farheen, decried the verdict as unacceptable and vowed to take the matter to the Supreme Court. The trial, initiated by the Maharashtra ATS in 2018 and later overseen by the NIA, involved testimony from 323 witnesses. Thirty-seven turned hostile during proceedings. Special Judge AK Lahoti flagged serious shortcomings in the prosecution's case, noting that suspicion alone could not serve as proof. With these findings, the accused were granted the benefit of the doubt and released. (With inputs from PTI) view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. 'No Helmet, No Fuel' For Two-Wheeler Riders In Bhopal, Indore From August 1

Last Updated: Starting August 1, two-wheeler riders without helmets will be denied petrol in Bhopal and Indore. Beginning August 1, two-wheeler riders without helmets would not be allowed to buy petrol from fuel pumps in Bhopal and Indore, as the collectors of these cities have issued prohibitory orders with an aim to curb violations of traffic rules. The prohibitory orders in this regard were issued on Wednesday by Bhopal Collector Kaushalendra Vikram Singh and Indore Collector Ashish Singh, citing a rising number of road accidents, NDTV reported. Instructions have been given to all the fuel pump owners in the two cities not to provide fuel to any rider not wearing an ISI-marked helmet. The order will be enforced from August 1 to September 29, 2025. The violation of the order, issued under section 163 of the Indian Civil Security Code 2023, will attract legal action against the concerned petrol pump, which includes imprisonment up to one year or a fine up to Rs 5,000 or both. The order cited recurring reports and alarming statistics around two-wheeler fatalities in recent years. It referenced Section 129 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, which makes ISI-marked helmets mandatory for both drivers and pillion riders. PTI reported. Justice Sapre (retired) instructed that a campaign should be launched in Indore to ensure two-wheeler riders wear helmets and passengers fasten seat belts in cars. The Madhya Pradesh High Court recently expressed its displeasure over the blatant violation of traffic rules on the streets of Indore, stressing the need to take strict steps. Regional Transport Officer (RTO) Pradeep Sharma said that 32 lakh vehicles, including about 16 lakh two-wheelers, were registered under various categories in Indore district since 1950. He said that approximately 21 lakh vehicles are currently running on roads in Indore district.
