Looney Tunes fans rejoice after Coyote vs Acme film is saved from Warner Bros vault in ‘$50m' deal
Looney Tunes fans are rejoicing after it was confirmed that the previously shelved Coyote vs Acme has been saved.
The film, which stars John Cena, Will Forte, and Stephanie Hsu, acting alongside cartoon characters, will finally be released after an agonising two-year wait.
Coyote vs Acme had been shelved by Warner Bros as part of a tax write-off, before Ketchup Entertainment swooped in to save it from gathering dust forever.
The production company announced on Monday (31 March) that it had acquired worldwide distribution rights to the live-action animated film for an undisclosed sum.
According to Deadline, the deal was 'pegged in the $50m range'. The publication also states that the film is expected to get a theatrical release in 2026.
The film is estimated to have cost $72m to produce. Axing its release, however, allowed Warner Bros to take an estimated $30m tax write-down.
At the time, Warner Bros called the decision 'difficult' and thanked the cast and crew for their work on the film.
Fans were unhappy with the strategy taken by the studio, which also resulted in an almost completed $90m Batgirl film and an animated Scooby Doo film also being shelved.
Those fans are now understandably overjoyed at this news from Ketchup Entertainment.
CEO of DC Studios James Gunn was among those to celebrate the news on X/Twitter, resharing the announcement with a love heart emoji.
'Repeat after me… TOONS NEVER DIE!' wrote another person in a post that has received over 26,000 likes.
Someone else wrote: 'That Coyote vs Acme news made my entire year. Ketchup Entertainment is doing more to save cinema than any major studio. Can't wait to get Looney again!!!'
In addition to Coyote vs Acme, Ketchup also recently released another Looney Tunes film jettisoned by Warner Bros – The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie.
'We did it! We got Coyote vs Acme out of the Warner vault,' said one person, with another adding: 'That's great news. Thanks Ketchup Entertainment for saving the film from limbo.'
Directed by Dave Green, Coyote vs Acme is based on a 1990 article in The New Yorker by Ian Frazier. The film follows Wile E Coyote as he files a lawsuit against Acme Corporation for the many faulty products that failed to catch him the Road Runner.
Forte plays Wile E Coyote's lawyer Kevin Avery, who must face off in court against Acme's intimidating lawyer, played by Cena, who happens to be his former boss.
The announcement that the film had been axed back in November 2023 was met with outrage from the cast and creatives.
At the time, Forte, called the decision 'f***ing bulls***'.
'It is such a delightful movie. It deserves so much better … it makes my blood boil and thank you for asking me about it because I like talking about the movie,' he said in an interview.
People were further disheartened by its axing after learning that the film was supposed to be great, with Oscar-winning filmmakers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller describing it as 'funny, charming, good physical comedy timing, with a surprising amount of heart'.
Writer-director Brian Duffield also tweeted: 'I have seen this movie and it is excellent. It also tested in the high 90s repeatedly. It also had interested buyers. The people working at Warner Bros are anti-art and I hope multiple anvils drop on their heads.'

Jordan was not a fan of one of them while making Sinners. "I liked the fangs. Fangs were dope. The blood was a bit messy and uncomfortable at times. The blood was a lot," Jordan, sitting alongside Ryan Coogler, told People in an April interview. Coogler then shed a bit more light on Jordan's disdain for fake blood for People, adding, "I got called into a meeting a few weeks in by my producer and my wife Zinzi Coogler, and she was like, 'Hey, we gotta talk about Mike.' I'm like, 'What? What's going on?' And she's like, 'The blood — he doesn't like it.' I'm like, 'Wait, what?'" Jordan then brought a little more clarity to the situation. "First of all, there's a difference between complaining and venting,' Jordan told People, laughing. 'I was just more venting, you know what I'm saying? But they care about me, so they had a meeting. I appreciate the meeting." Warner Bros. Gives Up on ‘Akira' Remake, But Hollywood Won't
Well, it's happened. After 20 years of shuffling creative teams and development hell, Warner Bros. finally called it and won't remake Akira. But things aren't ending there, according to the Hollywood Reporter. WB's simply let go of the movie rights it acquired back in 2002. They've now returned to the manga's publisher, Kodansha; according to THR, several producers and talents are already 'lining up' for the chance to adapt it. No specific people were listed, ditto studios or streamers, but you can imagine all the big ones want it. WB's been threatening to do an Akira remake directed or written by either Stephen Norrington, Garry Whitta, Jaume Collet-Serra, or others. One of the more recent names thrown out there was Taika Waititi to direct and co-write in 2017, and it was even meant to release in May 2021. But after Waititi was locked in for Thor: Love & Thunder and other projects, the remake got pulled from the release schedule. Since then, there's been no word on it. Like Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Saw before it, Akira now has a chance at a real future on the big screen. The question now is, who'll be the one to bring it to the masses, and how will that film change the source for a new audience that probably only knows it because of the endlessly replicated slide? While waiting to see how that shakes out, there's the in-development Akira anime series from Gundam studio Sunrise, assuming that ever leaves development hell. Want more io9 news? Live-Action ‘Akira' Leaves Warner Bros. After Decades In Production Hell
'Akira' is now up for grabs as to its live-action rights. After decades of multiple people trying to get a live-action Akira off the ground, the rights have reverted back to Kodansha. I mean, I started covering this live-action adaptation back in 2015, and almost every year after that, new people were attached to write or direct the movie. During that time, I even managed to interview Katsuhiro Otomo, who wrote the original manga and directed the seminal 1988 anime adaptation. In that interview, Otomo revealed that he had final sign-off on the live-action scenario. So if Otomo didn't like the scenario, it meant the movie didn't get made. My guess is that Otomo has blocked every live-action scenario to date, and that's why Warner Bros. has let the live-action rights revert back to Kodansha. It's also likely that whoever takes the option on the live-action rights to Akira will still have to get past Otomo on its scenario. Honestly, if that's the case, then as long as Otomo is around, I doubt we will ever see a live-action adaptation. I mean, people have been joking about how terrible an American film of Akira would be since 2008. Hollywood still doesn't really get manga and anime, let alone video games. Akira is one of those cultural heirlooms that should be treated with the respect it deserves, and Hollywood's never been big on giving any kind of respect to Japanese creative talent. In any case, Akira's live-action rights are now back with Kodansha, and it will be interesting to see who will pick it up next, as no doubt Otomo will be just as strict with them as he has been with everyone else.
