One Piece just hinted at Brook's mysterious royal past and his secret bond with Gunko
New twist in Chapter 1149 connects the Straw Hats' musician to a tragic princess from the past
As any One Piece fan will tell you, no one is impervious to surprise character bait, shocking reveal, and tragic origin story. Chapter 1149 of the manga series just knocked us all out cold with a killer twist that links one of the Straw Hat Pirates, Brook, to a royal figure called Gunko.
Brook, the crew's living skeleton and musician, might get a more in-depth origin story involving a forgotten kingdom, a princess, and a battle against the World Government.
Let's break down what Oda just hinted at and why it has the potential to completely change everything we thought we knew about Brook.
Brook's royal connection confirmed in Elbaf arc
Gunko turns out to be a lost princess—and Brook may have once protected her
One Piece Chapter 1149 was the first time fans ever saw Gunko's hidden memories and found out that she used to be a princess who was kidnapped by the Celestial Dragons.
While her memories had been imprisoned by neuroconditioning, once Colon screamed for assistance, these sad recollections began returning to her consciousness.
In a wonderful meta moment, Gunko then dramatically reveals that he just figured out who Brook is and shouts his name:
"Brook? You're Brook, right?"
This single line confirmed what many fans had suspected—Brook and Gunko knew each other long before the story began, likely during a time when Brook served a mysterious kingdom as a battle convoy leader.

Brook's hidden life before the rumbar pirates
He was more than just a pirate—Brook was a trained soldier with a noble mission
Before joining the Rumbar Pirates and eventually sailing to Laboon, Brook had been a soldier for an unknown kingdom. Though he was later remembered as a simple soldier, as a leader of a treasure convoy to support the royal family, he would have definitely been well-connected to the royal family.
Brook has already hinted at this in previous arcs, as he said on one occasion,
'Long ago, I served as the leader of the battle convoy of a certain kingdom.'
Gunko was the former princess of said kingdom, and Brook likely her bodyguard or court musician. This would explain both her nostalgia for him crooning and her original calling to be a pirate.
Gunko was taken by the celestial dragons
Her kingdom may have been destroyed—and Brook might have failed to save her
Gunko's flashbacks show her crying out for her father as she's dragged away—likely by the Celestial Dragons themselves or their agents. One whole kingdom decimated and maybe even entirely eradicated, this lends credence to the theory that her whole kingdom was massacred and driven to Brook, or at least, to few enough remaining to pass fable as folklore.
It's this heartbreaking experience that likely compelled Brook to leave his home country and eventually come on board with the Rumbar Pirates. Then he died, was resurrected with the power of the Yomi Yomi no Mi, and that all changed. He's lost nearly everything that once made him, him. Though resuscitation may have knocked his memory awake, if the needless death of his earthly form resuscitated it, the magnificent bond between him and Gunko is intact.
What happens next? Brook may face Gunko under Imu's control
Gunko is still brainwashed—and Luffy's crew must save her before it's too late
Gunko is indeed ultimately under the control of Imu, the shadowy figure that's been implied to be the ultimate wielder of power in the World Government. Brook's reunion with her is as heart wrenchingly tragic, because she can't fully escape the mind control just … Read more
Because Brook's music can heal the hearts and souls of lost children, perhaps only this healing gift can restore Gunko's lost, full memories and liberate her from Imu's malevolent control.
Luffy and the gang have to fight their way back to the surface and regroup.
When does One Piece chapter 1150 release?
The Elbaf arc seems set to begin in earnest in the One Piece chapter 1096 spoilers, and hopefully we'll continue to learn more about Brook and Gunko's connection. Here's when you can expect to see it, INDYCAR fans — can't wait to see you there!
Forthcoming in 2025 Official release date: June 1, 2025
Released in English on Manga Plus on May 31 (US/UK) early!
Japan Local Time : 12 AM JST Monday
Legally, you can read the entire chapter for free on Manga Plus.
Brook's backstory is bigger than we ever knew
With this last reveal, Brook finally changes from comic relief to tragic hero.
A warrior who once valiantly defended a kingdom, lost everything, and possibly in this new existence finally has a chance to rescue someone from his history.
Outside of that, this potential arc has all the makings of being one of the most emotional, and thus most powerful, components of the final One Piece saga, and anime fans can't help but be excited to see how Oda builds off this moment in the chapters to come.

Jung Il-woo gears up for 'Brilliant Days' release; his inspiring comeback story will help you beat those mid-week blues

Jung Il-woo in the drama 'Brilliant Days' Who knew a casual dip into school theatre could launch a star? Jung Il-woo sure didn't. As a reserved high schooler with zero acting ambitions, he joined the drama club on a whim and starred in "Our Twisted Hero" during a festival. The rush from the audience's cheers? Absolute magic, shattering his introverted ways and igniting a passion he never saw coming. His parents were his biggest cheerleaders, diverting academic pressures to his studious sister and urging him to chase what excited him. Fast-forward to cutthroat auditions, he beat 400:1 odds for a role in the hit sitcom "High Kick!", catapulting him to instant celebrity status. But here's the funny part - he initially figured every actor explodes after one project. However, that was not the case. His roaring 20s were the classic young adult grind, pushing limits. The Shocking Health Reveal Talk about a plot twist no one sees coming - at 27, Jung was hit with a brain aneurysm diagnosis, that pesky swollen vessel lurking like a silent alarm waiting to go off. This could've scored him a full military exemption in Korea, where service is a rite of passage, but he opted for alternative duty instead, spending time at a nursing home aiding dementia patients. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Jolie-Pitt Family Expresses Support For Shiloh's Change Drivepedia Undo The push? His mom's no-nonsense advice: "You still have to serve," coupled with his fear that hiding the condition would sabotage his career in the public eye. This unexpected halt became a blessing in disguise, prompting multiple soul-searching treks along the Camino de Santiago , where he reflected deeply and reshaped his frantic mindset into one of calm appreciation for the now. These days, he's acing management with regular check-ups, brushing off the odd headache like it's no big deal. Grand Return to the Screen After a solid three-year hiatus, Jung is back and better in "Brilliant Days," a charming family melodrama that dives into life's glittering highlights, whether from the past, present, or future horizons. He steps into the shoes of Lee Ji-hyuk, a sharp, all-around achiever who's nailed both career highs and romantic wins with cool precision. During a fun TV spot, he shared laughs about the role's appeal - imagine a character so driven and loyal, it'd be a total catch in real life, though maybe a tad busy with all those talents! The drama's vibe is all about universal 'brilliant' moments, like crushing a major milestone or savouring everyday joys, wrapped in heartfelt family ties and twists. Expanding on the fun, filming brought out his reflective side post-health scare, infusing the project with genuine depth and a witty nod to life's unpredictable rhythm, making it relatable for anyone who's ever hit pause and come back swinging.

Pratik Gandhi: We keep saying art has no barriers; the audience just proved it

Apart from getting the country vibing to a banger opening theme, Hansal Mehta's Scam 1992 also gave the audience an actor to look forward to – Pratik Gandhi . With a body of work that spans Gujarati films, Hindi plays, OTT shows and movies, Pratik has become a name to reckon with, more so in the last two years with projects like Do Aur Do Pyaar , Agni , Madgaon Express , Dhoom Dhaam and Phule . In a chat with us, the actor speaks about his love for theatre, his takeaway from the Phule controversy and why the struggle of Bollywood films is more complex than it looks. Excerpts: 'No film institute can give you what theatre does' 'Theatre is an actor's gym,' says Pratik, who was in the city to stage Mohan Ka Masala , in which he played the role of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. 'It is a place where you can work on different prototypes. When you perform in a play, you go through the same story and emotions multiple times. I live that character more than once and it gives me the chance to rehearse my craft,' says the actor. Highlighting that tools and theoretical knowledge are of no use if you can't implement them, Pratik adds, 'Film institutes can teach you about the tools you can use as an actor, or about the theory part of the profession, but theatre gives you a platform to implement that knowledge practically. That's something no other place can give you.' 'The audience has evolved multifold; makers are taking time' Bollywood has been trying to figure out what really clicks with the audience post the pandemic. While experts try to decipher that, Pratik shares a different take on why the industry is struggling. 'It's a very complex thing. You can't look at the problem from just one lens – of content, marketing, etc,' says the actor, adding, 'I feel that for the longest time, filmmakers and the audience were evolving together, almost in sync with each other. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 20 Pieces of Clothing you should Ditch over 40 Learn More Undo But during the pandemic the exposure to global content happened and the audience suddenly evolved multifold. Makers, on the other hand, could not evolve that fast and that created a huge gap which we are all trying to fill up. It's happening, but it will take some time.' Pratik also feels that the audience's evolution was unprecedented. 'Earlier, India was looked at as a less English-speaking market and makers would be told to dumb stories down. Now, people are watching Korean and Spanish shows. Someone sitting in a remote area is watching an English show on their phone. This was something no one predicted. We keep saying art has no barriers. The audience just proved it.' Another enemy everyone is fighting nowadays is the overuse of data in filmmaking. If you are creating a film or show on the basis of data interpretation, then you don't need human brains to work in this industry Pratik Gandhi 'Nobody has the time to process anything today' A few months ago, Phule , which featured Pratik and Patralekhaa as Jyotirao and Savitribai Phule, respectively, had a brush with controversy after certain groups opposed the film's release. While the film did get a stamp of approval from critics and viewers after it released, Pratik says he wasn't surprised with what happened. 'The world has become impatient. We want to react and jump the gun before watching or understanding anything,' he says, adding, 'In the chaotic world of social media and hyperconnectivity, nobody has the time to process anything. I keep giving this example to people that in the Doordarshan days, news anchors would read the news to you, without added emotion or a specific tone. This was so you could interpret the news the way you wanted to, without being biased. Now, news is interpreted and given to you. You are not supposed to use your brain. Looking at everything, I was not surprised by the people's reaction to Phule. I faced the same issues during Bhavai (2021). What people think and what can offend them, that's something nobody can gauge.' On the relevance of Phule and Gandhi in today's times... Having played Mahatma Phule on screen and Mahatma Gandhi on stage, Pratik says that so many things from these legendary figures' lives are relevant even today. 'We hear about discrimination, wars and people justifying violence in different ways every day. These are things that these prominent figures in Indian history fought against. I think they were visionaries because they could visualise that the world would need guiding thoughts in difficult times even if they weren't around. That makes them significant even today,' he says. Speaking about his play Mohan Ka Masala , Pratik adds, 'We tend to think that Gandhiji was born with qualities of a Mahatma but it's not like that. He was a common man like any of us who made mistakes and learnt from them. The message you can take away from the play is that everyone has been given qualities to become a Mahatma. It is the choices you make that define your journey.' Pratik Gandhi at Aga Khan Palace (Pic: Jignesh Mistry) On six-pack abs and a possible Madgaon Express reunion In his next OTT show, Saare Jahan Se Achha, Pratik plays a spy. Speaking about the same, he says, 'We've often seen spies as these super-special, heroic people who can do anything. That's not the case in real life and we have tried to show that with our next. Spies six-packs wale thodi hote hai!' On the topic of six-pack abs, we ask him about his shirtless act in Dhoom Dhaam and whether he would do it again. Pratik laughs and shares, 'I don't mind at all! I have always looked like that. Just that I had never taken my shirt off on screen before Dhoom Dhaam .' On a concluding note, we ask the actor if he and the team are open to a Madgaon Express sequel. To that, Pratik says, 'The whole team is super excited to do it again. We are all just waiting for Kunal (Kemmu) to come up with an idea. It was a crazy, mad film.'
