Dalai Lama's 90th birthday: From Kiren Rijiju to Richard Gere — Who attended celebrations at Tsuglagkhang temple?

Mint12 hours ago
The Dalai Lama's 90th birthday was marked by a massive celebration in the main courtyard of Tsuglagkhang, the Dalai Lama temple, on Sunday. From Tibetan Buddhist to students to Indian minister and Hollywood actors, many gathered on Sunday in Dharamshala, Himachal Pradesh to celebrate 90th birth anniversary of the 14th Dalai Lama.
The birthday was attended by the representatives of various Tibetan Buddhist sects, school children, dancers and singers from different countries, and Buddhists from across the world, news agency AFP reported.
A video shared by news agency ANI on X showed the presence of Union ministers Kiren Rijiju and Rajiv Ranjan Singh, Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu, Sikkim minister Sonam Lama, and Hollywood actor Richard Gere during the 90th birthday celebrations of the 14th Dalai Lama.
In his address during the ceremony, Hollywood actor and practising Buddhist, Richard Gere, said, "... We have never seen a human being like him who completely embodies selflessness, love, and wisdom...'
'At a religious conference following His Holiness' proclamation to continue the institution of the Dalai Lama, many lamas openly declared that the Dalai Lama no longer just belongs to Tibet, but to the world and the universe... His holiness exists beyond any concept of time and space,' Gere said.
Meanwhile, Union Minister Kiren Rijiju praised the spiritual leader's global influence. He called him a "living bridge between ancient wisdom and the modern world," pledging to follow his decisions and traditions, honouring his presence in India.
Rijiju said, "Your holiness, you are more than a spiritual leader. You are a living bridge between ancient wisdom and the modern world. We feel blessed by his presence in our country, which he regards as his 'aryabhoomi'."
Former US presidents George W Bush, Bill Clinton, and Barack Obama sent their birthday wishes via video messages.
Monks, devotees, and international guests gathered for the celebration to honour the life and teachings of the Dalai Lama, who is widely regarded as a global symbol of compassion, non-violence and interfaith harmony.
The celebrations on Sunday are the culmination of days of long-life prayers for Tenzin Gyatso, who followers believe is the 14th reincarnation of the Dalai Lama, a man whose moral teachings and idiosyncratic humour have made him one of the world's most popular religious leaders.
It all started with a song for the Dalai Lama performed by Switzerland-based Tibetan singer Jamyan Choeden. It was followed by a dance performance by a group of Mongolian and Albanian artists.
The celebrations also included his key announcement that, after being inundated with messages of support from fellow Tibetans both inside and in exile, the spiritual institution will continue after his death.
Dharamshala, Himachal Pradesh, is home to the Dalai Lama since he and thousands of other Tibetans fled Chinese troops who crushed an uprising in their capital Lhasa in 1959.

(Image: Instagram/ Nick Jonas) Priyanka Chopra Jonas may have a shelf full of accolades, a thriving acting career across continents, and the title of Miss World 2000 under her belt — but when it comes to household chores, there's one task she's hilariously determined to avoid: laundry. In a recent interview with PEOPLE, the 42-year-old actress and producer candidly confessed that despite her polished public persona, the washing machine remains her personal nemesis. 'Laundry is a hard chore for me. I find it tough,' she said. 'I'll always try to get someone else to do it.' And as it turns out, that 'someone' happened to be none other than her mother-in-law, Denise a glimpse into their close-knit relationship, Priyanka revealed that her mother-in-law once offered to teach her the ropes of laundry. But in a twist worthy of a sitcom, Chopra Jonas had a different plan. 'That was just my way of getting her to do my laundry for me!' she laughed, admitting that she let the tutorial play out just long enough before surrendering the job to Denise. 'I can steam an iron, I can fold,' she clarified. 'But just getting through the process of laundry is just really tough. Too many buttons, too many choices, too many little things…' Following the playful confession, Priyanka joked she needed to make a phone call right away. 'I'm going to call her right now and tell her I said this. 'Just want you to know!'' she added, laughing. Since marrying Nick Jonas in 2018, Priyanka has maintained a warm and visible bond with the Jonas family. Denise, in particular, has often appeared in candid social media moments featuring the couple's three-year-old daughter, Malti Marie. The affection is mutual. Back in 2023, on The Jennifer Hudson Show, Priyanka shared a touching moment when Denise recalled watching the young Indian contestant win the Miss World pageant in 2000. At the time, Nick was just seven years old, while Priyanka was seventeen. 'My mother-in-law was like, 'I remember watching you when you won,'' Priyanka said, still awestruck at how time — and fate — brought their worlds together. 'He was sitting there, and he was watching. Unfathomable.'While she may avoid the spin cycle at home, Priyanka Chopra Jonas continues to be in constant motion professionally. Her latest action-comedy Heads of State is now streaming on Prime Video, featuring John Cena as the U.S. president and Idris Elba as the U.K. prime minister. Directed by Ilya Naishuller, the film is yet another addition to her increasingly diverse filmography. Up next, Chopra Jonas will be seen in The Bluff alongside Karl Urban and Judgment Day, co-starring Zac Efron and Will Ferrell — both projects that signal her growing influence in global cinema. But amid all the Hollywood action, it's the quieter, personal anecdotes — like tricking your mother-in-law into doing the laundry — that remind fans why Priyanka remains one of the most relatable stars.

Pakistan honours 'Kargil hero' whose body it refused to accept

NEW DELHI: Pakistan army chief Asim Munir and other senior officers on Saturday paid "heartfelt tribute" to Captain Karnal Sher Khan Shaheed on the occasion of his 26th "martyrdom" anniversary for what Islamabad describes as his unwavering courage and patriotism during the 1999 Kargil war. However, it's learnt that Pakistan had refused to accept his body that was found on Tiger Hill in the Dras sub-sector. According to a press release issued by the Indian embassy in Washington on July 15, 1999, Pakistan authorities adamantly refused to acknowledge the involvement of Pakistan army regulars in the misadventure in Kargil and as a part of that process did not initially acknowledge Khan's identification by India through correspondence found on him. "It is clear that Pakistan is fully aware of the identities of these bodies but they do not wish to acknowledge this fact as it would immediately expose their army's involvement in Kargil. Hence, their persistent and callous refusal to do so, they are doing great disservice to the families of their soldiers and to the traditions of armed forces everywhere," the embassy had said in its statement. India had approached Pakistan on July 12, saying it would like to hand over the body to the Pakistan army. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Top 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo Subsequently, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) approached India on July 13, stating that the Pakistan govt had requested them to contact India for handing over the bodies of the two officers about which they had heard. "The Pakistani request did not specify the names and identities of the two officers, despite the information being available to them. The reason is obvious. The Pakistan authorities realised that if they conceded the identities of these two officers, it would demolish the myth that the Pakistan army was not involved in Kargil," said the embassy.

Image- AFP Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday called for urgent reforms in global institutions, including the UN Security Council, the World Trade Organisation and leading financial bodies, stating that they must reflect the current realities of the world. 'In the age of AI, where technology evolves every week, it's unacceptable for global institutions to go 80 years without reform. You can't run 21st-century software on 20th-century typewriters!' Modi said in his address at a session on reform of global governance at the BRICS summit. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD He also said that without the Global South, these institutions are like 'a mobile phone with a SIM card but no network.' The Global South has often been a victim of 'double standards' and nations that make major contributions to the world economy are deprived of a seat at the decision-making table, PM Modi said at the BRICS Summit on Sunday while calling for urgent reform of the key global bodies. The top leaders of BRICS held deliberations on a range of pressing challenges facing the globe on the first day of the grouping's two-day annual summit in this seaside Brazilian city. Chinese President Xi Jinping and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin skipped the summit. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and Egypt's Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi also didn't attend the gathering. The BRICS has emerged as an influential grouping as it brings together 11 major emerging economies of the world, representing around 49.5 per cent of the global population, around 40 per cent of the global GDP and around 26 per cent of the global trade. In his remarks, Modi spoke extensively on the Global South and said it has often faced 'double standards' — be it development, distribution of resources or security related matters. 'The Global South often received nothing more than token gestures on topics like climate finance, sustainable development, and technology access,' Modi said. The prime minister said two-thirds of humanity still lack proper representation in global institutions built in the 20th century. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD 'Many countries that play a key role in today's global economy are yet to be given a seat at the decision-making table. This is not just about representation, it's also about credibility and effectiveness.' The prime minister said the global institutions are unable to function properly or meet the challenges of the 21st century. 'Whether it's ongoing conflicts across the world, the pandemic, economic crises, or emerging challenges in cyber or space, these institutions have failed to offer solutions,' he said. The annual BRICS Summit began with a family photo of the leaders followed by an address by Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Modi said the world today needs a new multipolar and inclusive order and this has to begin with comprehensive reforms in global institutions. 'These reforms should not be merely symbolic, but their real impact should also be visible. There must be changes in governance structures, voting rights, and leadership positions,' he said. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD The prime minister asserted that the challenges faced by countries in the Global South must be given priority in policymaking. Modi said the expansion of BRICS is proof of the fact that it is an organisation that has the capacity to change itself according to the times. 'Now, we must demonstrate the same determination to reform institutions like the UN Security Council, the WTO, and multilateral development banks,' he said. The prime minister also noted that India has always considered it a duty to rise above self interest and work towards the interest of humanity. 'We're fully committed to work along with the BRICS countries on all matters, and provide our constructive contributions,' he said. In his address, Lula said the world is witnessing the unparalleled collapse of multilateralism and that the meeting is taking place in the most adverse global scenario. 'We are fully committed to make constructive contributions on all subjects, along with the BRICS countries,' Modi added. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD With inputs from agencies
