Responding to a query on whether Bengali cinema doesn't have that impact anymore, Ashutosh added, 'Every regional cinema has its high time and low time. Why this wave happens, nobody can answer. This year, we've seen equally important films from every region.' A noticeable trend this year was the rise of debut directors. I dedicate this National Award to all the incredible mothers of the world.' Reflecting on the real-life story of an Indian immigrant mother at the film's heart, Mukerji said it 'shook me deeply.' Becoming a mother herself made the role even more personal. She also thanked her fans, saying, 'Your love and support is everything I've ever needed to stay motivated. You've embraced every role I've brought to life. Without you, I'd be a nobody today.' Her cousin and actress Kajol also shared her pride, writing, 'Your performance was pure fire and heart. Producers Guneet Monga Kapoor and Achin Jain celebrated the win as 'a victory for every voice that deserves to be heard.' 'A lot of good films were in competition, but only one can win. Ye 10-12 saal ki mehnat hai ,' he said. Reflecting on the film's much-discussed climactic monologue, he added, 'It's inspired by a dialogue between Shivji and Parvati… If someone trusts you and you deceive them, that's the worst betrayal. ' Kingrani said the monologue perfectly echoed the film's message. Kerala Story wins big ...but Kerala CM isn't happy Sudipto Sen's The Kerala Story took home top honours at the National Film Awards, winning in the Best Director and Best Cinematography categories. Producer Vipul Amrutlal Shah welcomed the recognition. 'It's been a very, very tough film to make, and to get this kind of recognition at the national level with two very prestigious awards is supremely exciting and satisfying,' he said. Director Sudipto told ANI , 'The journey of making The Kerala Story was a team effort and it is the team's victory. It was not made in Mumbai but we went to small villages and cities in Kerala and collected facts for the story. It is a different kind of feeling.' However, the decision to recognise the film has drawn criticism from Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan. He expressed his disappointment, stating that the film promotes an ideology that, in his view, distorts facts and spreads communal discord. 'By honouring a film that spreads blatant misinformation with the clear intent of tarnishing Kerala's image and sowing seeds of communal hatred, the jury of the National Film Awards has lent legitimacy to a narrative rooted in the divisive ideology of the Sangh Parivar,' he wrote on X.

...You have to consider each film for impact, box office and social relevance, says jury head - and Swades director

The 71st National Film Awards have been announced and, in true tradition, not without triggering conversations about who's deserving and who's not. Pre-empting the usual rounds of speculation, jury chairperson started the announcement with a disclaimer in his opening remarks 'You can't compare two talents and two films, but we are forced to do that and that's when we make our selection. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now We applaud all films, but we salute these chosen ones.' Gowariker addressed the complexity of the selection process. He emphasised that the primary criterion for choosing winners was the impact of the film on audiences. He said, 'When it comes to the National Film Awards, it is definitely a difficult task. It needs a lot of deliberation, a lot of discussion. You have to consider each film for its impact, box office performance, and societal relevance especially across different languages. ' Asked specifically about the inclusion of The Kerala Story and whether the decision was unanimous, he responded, 'All our deliberations have been unanimous. Through our deliberations, through our discussions — until the jury arrived on the same plane with each other — we did not select the film. It has been unanimous.' 'Every regional cinema has its high time and low time' This year, Hindi cinema seems to be the star at the National Film Awards. Responding to a query on whether Bengali cinema doesn't have that impact anymore, Ashutosh added, 'Every regional cinema has its high time and low time. Jury member expresses disappointment at quality of Tollywood feature films submitted for National Film awards

1 2 3 4 5 6 KOLKATA: A jury member of the 71st National Film Awards from Kolkata has expressed disappointment at the quality of films from Tollywood that were submitted in the feature film category. Aneesh Basu, who won Best Audiography for 'Jhilli' at the 69th National Film Awards, was the only one from Kolkata among the 11-member central panel of the feature film jury headed by Director Ashutosh Gowarikar this year. Arjunn Dutta's 'Deep Fridge' was the lone ranger from Tollywood whose name featured in the winners' list that was announced on Friday. Basu told TOI that the standard of submitted films from Tollywood left many in the jury wondering about the dip in the quality of Bengali feature films. "Even while watching films in the final round, we found most repeating the same locations. The characters are confined within the same room and talk about the same relationship problems. Cinema from Bengal was once a brand. But the quality of contemporary movies in submission left jury members disappointed. That is why not one Bengali feature film received any award in any category while competing with films from other languages. One Bengali feature film had to win in the language film category, but that category was not any competition with films from all other languages," said Basu. "That included 'Ardhangini', 'Niharika', 'Mujib: The Making of a Nation', 'Deep Fridge', 'Padatik', 'Matripokhho', 'Raktabeej', 'Projapoti', 'Bablir Bornoporichoy', 'Rabindra Kabya Rahasya', 'Bijoyar Pore', 'Kabuliwala', 'Kurban', 'Fatafati', 'Abhagi' and 'Ami O Manohar'. As part of the central jury, we only saw the four Bengali feature films that made it to the final round. Those were 'Ardhangani', 'Niharika', 'Mujib: The Making of a Nation' and 'Deep Fridge'. There was a neck-to-neck fight between 'Deep Fridge' and a film by a multiple national award-winning director. The jury unanimously wanted to give the award to a young director. Age and inexperience mattered since we wanted to recognise the efforts of a new voice," added the 36-year-old jury member. 'Deep Fridge' director told TOI, "My film was selected for the Indian panorama of the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) too. While the National Award for 'Deep Fridge' completes a circle for me, I would definitely want more films from Tollywood to win awards in the national competition with other language movies in the feature film section." The story of Bengal's talent is slightly different in the non-feature film category. The top award in the non-feature category was picked up by Soumyajit Ghosh Dastidar's 'Flowering Man'. His Swarna Kamal for the best non-feature film comes with prize money of Rs 3 lakh. There are two Rajat Kamal winners for Kolkata-based technicians. While editor Niladri Roy received it for 'Moving Focus', sound designer Shubharun Sengupta got it for 'Dhundhgiri Ke Phool'.
