Also known as CHAN 2024, we are just days away from the beginning of one of Africa's most interesting international football competitions. The biennial tournament should have occurred in February 2025, but CAF postponed it for August 2-30, 2025.
Even though the tournament will be held in 2025, it is often referred to as the 2024 African Nations Championship. This is because it was originally scheduled for 2024, but due to logistical and unstructured issues, the organizers postponed it to 2025.
The event has much to offer, and football fans worldwide can expect many intriguing clashes, especially around South Africa. The team's in an interesting position and can surprise everyone, but before we see what happens, let's learn more about the upcoming event.
What is the African Nations Championship and what happened in the last event
The African Nations Championship is a biennial tournament organised by CAF (Confederation of African Football). It's an international tournament in Africa, but unlike the African Cup of Nations (AFCON), for example, this one has an interesting twist - it only features players playing in their country's respective leagues. In other words, the tournament does not feature footballers playing abroad.
Although some may find this condition disappointing, it is what sets CHAN apart from any other football tournament. Since teams can't use all of their players, fans can see many new names in action.
The first-ever CHAN was in 2009, and it only included 8 teams. Following the initial success, CAF increased the teams to 16, and for the current event, we will have a total of 19 teams.
Football fans who followed the last African Nations Championship remember that it occurred between January and February 2023. It included 17 teams, and after a fierce battle, Senegal clinched their first CHAN title. The team defeated Algeria (the host at the time) on penalties.

'Yes, we are interested in Zakhele Lepasa'

Durban City chairman Farook Kadodia has confirmed that the club is interested in former Orlando Pirates striker Zakhele Lepasa. The 28-year-old was one of the seven players to get released by the Buccaneers this pre-season. After nearly eight years with Pirates, Lepasa will now have to search for a new club. He is currently with the Bafana Bafana squad ahead of the CHAN tournament. 'Yes, we are interested in Zakhele Lepasa. He is a very good striker who could really help us as a team. We have spoken to his agent, and we are waiting for him to come back to us, and then we will take it from there. But seriously, we are interested in him and he has worked with coach Gavin Hunt before and he knows him very well,' Kadodia told Soccer Laduma . 'I understand there are other clubs who are also interested in Zakhele Lepasa, and you know in football it's all about money and who offers you better money, and we may lose out on him because of that, but we are looking at having him in the team if we can,' he concluded. Despite Durban City showing interest, Zakhele Lepasa has also been linked to Soweto giants Kaizer Chiefs. Amakhosi have already signed two former Pirates stars for free. After stadium delays, African Nations Championship kicks off

KENYA - After severe delays in stadium renovations, east Africa is finally ready to co-host the much-awaited African Nations Championship (CHAN), kicking off on Saturday. It is a historic moment for Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda, whose "Pamoja" - meaning "together" in Swahili - bid two years ago gave birth to the first Confederation of African Football (CAF) tournament in the region since 1976, and the first to be jointly hosted by three countries. The CHAN tournament, which runs to August 30, acts as a precursor to the continent's main event, the Africa Cup of Nations in 2027, also co-hosted by the three countries. CHAN features only players from domestic clubs, and cannot include anyone playing for teams abroad. Getting the five stadiums ready has been a struggle, with CAF delaying the tournament from its planned dates in February to give them more time to prepare. On a final inspection tour in Nairobi last week CAF general secretary Veron Mosengo-Omba celebrated the three nations' progress and co-operation. "I think we in Africa need to learn from this model. Three countries have pooled their efforts and resources to successfully deliver," he told reporters. - 'Great challenge' - Tanzania will get the 19-team competition underway when they play Burkina Faso at the Benjamin Mkapa stadium in the economic capital Dar es Salaam on Saturday. Favourites Morocco pulled out of the last competition in Algeria in February 2023, but have returned with one of the tournament's strongest teams, featuring six players from the winning CAF Confederation Cup - including Olympian goalkeeper Rachid Ghanimi. The two-time champions have been drawn in Group A, alongside hosts Kenya, as well as Angola, Zambia, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Kenya are making their debut under South African head coach Benni McCarthy, part of Erik ten Hag's Manchester United coaching staff. "Honestly, it is a great challenge," the 47-year-old said. "When you play football and then convert to become a coach, to get what you want to be the best, the difficult teams will always be in your path. You have to beat them anyway." Co-hosts Uganda have competed in six of the previous seven CHAN tournaments without ever qualifying for the knockout phase, but they hope to break the jinx, beginning with the home group matches against Algeria, Guinea, Niger and South Africa. They have tapped former national team captain Denis Onyango to join the technical bench and help improve their goalkeeping. Meanwhile, defending champions Senegal begin against fellow west African rivals Nigeria at Zanzibar's Amaan stadium on August 5.

Maema embracing Bafana Bafana challenge ahead of CHAN return

MAMELODI Sundowns Neo Maema set to lead Bafana Bafana in Chan. | BackpagePix Image: BackpagePix Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Neo Maema is hoping the African Nations Championship (CHAN) will offer Bafana Bafana a chance to break new ground after more than a decade of absence from the continental tournament. Maema, who captained South Africa during a number of crucial CHAN qualifiers earlier this year, is expected to retain a central role in the squad for the tournament finals. Notably, he remains one of the few players in the current team still under contract with a Premier Soccer League club. The midfielder's standout displays during the CHAN qualifiers helped him win back the confidence of Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso, whose midfield options are among the strongest in the league. His timely return to form saw him earn more minutes at club level. Despite being linked with a move away from Chloorkop in recent weeks, no deal has been finalised, and Maema now appears set to use the CHAN platform to ensure a smooth transition back into the rhythm of competitive football. Advertisement Next Stay Close ✕ Ad loading Speaking after Bafana's 1–1 draw with Angola at Lucas Moripe Stadium on Tuesday, the 29-year-old midfielder expressed his pride in representing his country and looked ahead with optimism. 'It is an opportunity and an honor to represent the country,' Maema said. 'It's a proud moment and a massive achievement for us to get to this position, and it's a tournament we haven't participated on in such a long time, and the only thing that will matter is us making sure we put the national team in a good position to be ready for the tournament. 'This will be a huge one because it has been 12 years since we last represented the country at such a competition and we should be excited as a group of players. 'As an individual I am happy to lead the team in such a big competition, we are honored and privileged to be in this position.' Maema will be joined in the squad by teammates Malibongwe Khoza and Terrence Mashego, and believes that their shared club experience could provide the team with an added advantage in terms of chemistry and understanding. 'It does help,' Maema continued. 'The only thing I can say about the players that are familiar to me is that, they have the winning mentality to help the other guys, but we are professionals and we know what to do and we know what is at stake. 'It's just about helping the technical team so that they can also help us to form a team that will be able to compete at such a big tournament.' Given the timing of the tournament—immediately following the pre-season window—many players in the CHAN squad arrived without clubs, meaning they may lack full fitness. Maema believes that unity and collective effort will be vital in building momentum before the first game. 'We just need a bit of time, we have a week left before we start our first game,' he continued. 'We will just go back to the drawing board, today we played a draw, we will help each other. Most of us we are not match fit, we can just help each other to train and push each other to make sure that in every department we (are ready to) help each other. 'It is very difficult not to have a pre-season and go into a tournament that is going to demand so much from us, we should just maintain spirits of brotherhood and ensure we are together in this.'
