Boy, 14, run over and killed by L-plater while walking to school is identified as math whizz - as heartbreaking details emerge about his family
Declan Phillips, 14, was walking to Wynnum State High School, in Brisbane 's east, when he was struck by a Mitsubishi Pajero on Tingal Road and Berrima Street at 8.20am on Wednesday.
The driver of the car, a 17-year-old, and his two passengers were not injured in the accident.
Queensland Police are now investigating the crash.
Other students from the school visited the crash site on the afternoon of the accident and laid flowers in tribute to the Year 9 student.
Declan was a gifted maths student with a passion for solving problems.
One of his favourite puzzles was the Rubik's cube which he was able to solve in under 45 seconds.
He routinely competed in Speedcubing Australia which was hosted by the World Cube Association.
A GoFundMe has since been launched to help his grieving family following his untimely death.
Wynnum State High School sent out a notice alerting staff and students as to what happened and counselling services have been provided to all involved.
Family friend Lisa Axem wrote in Declan's GoFundMe that he had a promising future in an array of areas.
'His younger brother and parents are still in deep shock, disbelief and grief,' she wrote.
'His chair which normally holds his school bag sits empty in the dining room. His hobbies, toys and iPad remain untouched. His room is quiet and still.
'All that can be heard in the family home are quiet voices and deep sobbing.'
Friends and classmates also commending the impact Declan had on them.
'I will always remember when we were little and we would play together. You had such a bright future, and you were so loved, I miss you already,' one friend wrote.
'It's going to feel so strange knowing you are not going to walk past there ever again,' another wrote.
'I know you are resting easy and God is taking care of you up there, you were the quietest but sweetest kid.'
Wynnum State High School's principal, Sandra Quinn, said Declan was a valued member of the community in a letter which was sent out a letter to parents.
'The student was a much-loved year nine male student and valued member of our Wynnum State High School community,' she said, reported the Courier Mail.
'I know that you will join me in offering our deepest condolences to his family, friends and loved ones during this difficult time.
'As a tight-knit school community, we share our shock and sadness at the enormity of this situation.'
The 4WD which hit Declan was seen wedged underneath the Wynnum Rail Bridge, also known as Duck Bridge, which is infamous due to its mere 1.9m clearance.
Due to its limited height most emergency vehicles to struggle to fit underneath.
Pictures from the crash site later in the day showed grieving students coddled around each other placing flowers on the ground.
Member for Lytton Joan Pease MP said the incident had rocked the Wynnum community.
'It's heartbreaking for all those involved, the young person that sadly lost their life and also the driver of the other vehicle,' she told the publication.
Declan was hit roughly one kilometre away from his school.

Mother swan and two cygnets killed in canal lock crush
Three swans have been killed in a canal after they were crushed between a lock wall and a eyewitness told BBC Hereford and Worcester that the two cygnets became trapped inside the lock and were unable to escape, while their mother attempted to "protect them". They said the boat continued to enter the lock despite onlookers alerting those on board to the swans' Canal and River Trust said the incident, which happened in Stourport on York Street on 11 July, was "tragic and entirely avoidable". West Mercia Police said it was aware of the deaths and would liaise with the RSPCA. Known as Mrs BJS, the swan was a well-loved character in the area and had lived on the canal for six years, a local resident added the surviving two cygnets "constantly go up and down" the canal looking for their the Canal and River Trust said it was "deeply saddening" to learn of the incident and urged anyone with information to contact the police or the RSPCA."[We are] devoted to protecting and supporting wildlife along our waterways - we are horrified by this cruel and senseless act," it said. Three sheriff's deputies killed in LA bomb squad explosion
At least three law enforcement officers have been killed in an explosion at a Los Angeles county sheriff's department facility. Firefighters and specialist bomb squad officers from the LA police department were called to a blast at the Biscailuz Centre in Monterey Park, in the east of the city, at about 7.30am local time (3.30pm BST). Pam Bondi, the attorney-general, confirmed in a post on X that three sheriff's deputies were killed in the explosion. 'I just spoke to Bill Essayli [the US attorney for the central district of California] about what appears to be a horrific incident that killed at least three at a law enforcement training facility in Los Angeles,' Bondi wrote. 'Our federal agents are at the scene and we are working to learn more. Please pray for the families of the sheriff's deputies killed.' According to aerial video from ABC7, the blast blew out the windows of a sheriff's department SUV vehicle. The sheriff's department's bomb squad is said to have been moving explosive materials at the time of the blast. The police department's bomb squad responded to the scene to disarm any other potential explosives munitions and the area has been evacuated, the Los Angeles Times reported. It was not immediately clear how many people were injured or if anyone else was killed. The sheriff's department is expected to provide further details shortly. Kathryn Barger, the Los Angeles county supervisor said in a statement: 'I am heartbroken to hear of the terrible tragedy that has unfolded today at an LA County sheriff's department facility. I am closely tracking the situation as we learn more about what occurred and the condition of those affected. 'My heart is heavy, and my thoughts are with the brave men and women of the sheriff's department during this difficult time. We stand with them and their families as they navigate the hours and days ahead.' The 200-acre facility is home to the sheriff's department's training centre, special enforcement unit, bomb squad and arson unit. In 2014 the Biscailuz Centre underwent a $22 million renovation and expansion project in which the sheriff's department centralised its training operations in one location. The Los Angeles county special enforcement bureau handles high-risk tactical operations involving barricaded suspects, hostage situations and other high-risk duties. It also provides security for visiting dignitaries and politicians.
