a A low-pressure system has formed over the Indian Ocean, currently designated as 01S, with wind speeds of 65 kilometres per hour. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reports that the system is likely to strengthen into a moderate cyclone and is tracking towards Indonesia. This weather development has led to increased cloud activity over the Bay of Bengal, enhancing the probability of rainfall across the Telugu-speaking states.
According to the IMD, Telangana is expected to experience heavy rainfall from July 17 to 19. Coastal Andhra Pradesh and the Union Territory of Yanam are forecast to receive similar weather between July 18 and 20, while Rayalaseema is likely to see rain on July 18 and 19. Widespread heavy to very heavy showers are also anticipated in Kerala, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka through to July 22. Wind speeds across southern India are projected to range between 40 and 50 kilometres per hour over the next five days.
Throughout the week, light rainfall is expected in Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Yanam. On July 17, storm clouds from Uttar Pradesh moved southwards in a fan-shaped pattern, resulting in morning showers in the northern districts of Telangana. Rain is predicted to intensify after 5pm and continue until the early hours of Friday, with moderate to heavy downpours likely in several regions, including Hyderabad.
In Andhra Pradesh, similar cloud formations are moving towards the Bay of Bengal, bringing morning showers to northern parts of the state. Rain will gradually spread across the region from 5pm onwards, persisting until around 11pm in Rayalaseema and continuing until 5am in coastal and northern districts. Guntur, Kadapa, and Rajahmundry are expected to receive heavy rainfall on Thursday.
Wind speeds over the Arabian Sea currently stand at 52 kilometres per hour, while Andhra Pradesh and Telangana are experiencing lighter winds of 12 and 11 kilometres per hour, respectively, conditions considered favourable for rainfall. Meanwhile, winds over the Bay of Bengal have reached 38 kilometres per hour. The IMD has clarified that, contrary to circulating reports, there is no low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal at present.
Daytime temperatures are forecast to range between 31 and 34 degree Celsius in Telangana and 35 to 36 degree Celsius in Andhra Pradesh. Coastal regions will remain hot throughout the day, with increased chances of evening rainfall. Humidity levels are expected to remain high overnight, 85% in Telangana and 89% in Andhra Pradesh, likely contributing to heavy overnight rainfall and a wet start to the following day.

Andhra Pradesh to see fairly widespread rainfall till July 24

A turn of weather is likely in the State as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has given a rain forecast for all the three regions of South Coastal A.P., North Coastal A.P. and Rayalaseema from July 18 to 24. Thereafter, until August 4, light to moderate rains are expected in North Coastal A.P. True to the forecast issued earlier, Vijayawada received a brief spell of heavy rain on Thursday evening, providing relief to people from sweltering heat. The maximum temperatures in the city remained around 40 degree Celsius from July 13, Sunday. Fairly widespread light to moderate rain is very likely in all the stations up to July 22, according to the IMD. Thereafter, while the rain is likely to continue in North Coastal A.P., in other parts, it will be scattered. The State has recorded 38% deficit rainfall between May 26, when the Southwest Monsoon arrived in the State, and July 17. According to realtime rainfall information provided on the Directorate of Economics and Statistics (DES), four districts, Palnadu, SPSR Nellore, Annamayya and YSR Kadapa, have registered large deficient rainfall till date. Their deficit percentages are between 55 and 75. Out of 26 districts, only six have registered normal rainfall. They are Alluri Sitarama Raju, Eluru, Parvatipuram Manyam, Vizianagaram, Visakhapatnam and Kurnool. The IMD, in its forecast for July, had predicted a normal rainfall in the Rayalaseema region. It said South Coastal A.P. may receive normal to above-normal rainfall while North Coastal A.P. may receive normal to below-normal rainfall. As per information on the DES, on Thursday between 8.30 a.m. and 7 p.m. Utukuru station in Gampalagudem mandal in NTR district received the day's maximum of 70.25 mm rainfall, followed by Bethapudi (51.5 mm) in Phirangipuram mandal of Guntur district and Parchur (50.25 mm) in Bapatla district. At present, lower tropospheric south westerly/ westerly winds prevail over Andhra Pradesh and Yanam, the IMD said. People have been cautioned as thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds may prevail across the State.

China's record-breaking heat pushes power demand to new high

Days of broiling record-breaking heat across large swathes of China pushed power demand to an all-time high in excess of 1.5 billion kilowatts, energy officials said. An arc of sweltering heat spans the densely populated southwestern cities of Chongqing and Chengdu to the southern megaport of Guangzhou, in extremes that meteorologists link to climate change - presenting a major challenge for authorities. A subtropical high weather system in the northwest and southwest drove temperatures at eight weather stations in the last two days to their highest yet, state media said on Thursday, citing national weather authorities. "The power system is holding up so far," said Chim Lee, a senior energy and climate change specialist at the Economist Intelligence Unit. "But the real test will come as the summer wears on, and there are still risks of potential power rationing." Solar energy accounted for half of June's surge in power generation , and hydropower output nationwide was up on 2023, though still lower than the corresponding 2022 period, Lee said. The comments came after China's National Energy Administration flagged a "record high" on Wednesday in the country's electrical load for the third time this month. That was an increase of 55 million kilowatts over last year's maximum. Provincial records have also been broken 36 times since summer began in the world's second-largest economy. Besides scorching croplands and eroding farm incomes, higher temperatures can affect manufacturing hubs and disrupt operations in key ports, straining overburdened healthcare. Every year in the past decade, the southern province of Jiangxi has experienced 21.7 days of temperatures above 28 degrees Celsius (82.4 degrees Fahrenheit) on average, up from five to seven at the turn of the century, state media added. The heat has persisted so long that in a blog post last week state broadcaster CCTV spotlighted a tradition of people sleeping with wax gourds, vegetables considered effective in absorbing body heat. In Chongqing, zoo animals were treated to iced watermelons on Wednesday, the official news agency Xinhua said. There is a chance of some respite, however. Weather forecasters expect temperatures to begin easing from Monday, as a tropical depression east of the Philippines may strengthen into a tropical storm expected to be named Wipha, and track across Taiwan toward southern China. However, the low-pressure system could be blocked by the subtropical high, keeping air conditioners running at full tilt and further straining the power grid .
