A lifestyle guru called @lifetips669 took to TikTok to share a series of fruit and veg hacks, with one in particular getting people talking for all the right reasons A lifestyle expert has revealed several crucial fruit and vegetable hacks - particularly one that stops your spuds from going sprooty. TikTok user @lifetips669 shared a video showcasing various clever tricks to maximise your grocery haul. They began, saying: "Vegetable vendors will never tell you these food storage tips". Explaining their potato preservation method, they said: "Potatoes bought in bulk go bad. Potatoes and apples are good friends. Storing them together prevents sprouting". The technique appears to have scientific backing, as pairing the two items reduces their ripening speed. It comes after Brits are told to never put one banned item in garden bins as you could face punishment. According to Tasting Table, apples release ethylene, a naturally occurring gas which "can slow down or halt potatoes' sprouting process". The site also suggests avoiding keeping potatoes in warm conditions, instead placing them somewhere "cool, dry and dark". Although, you shouldn't pop them in the fridge as chilly temperatures can "trigger the potato's starches to transform into sugars, which can become carcinogenic when cooked." However, be cautious as ethylene from apples can produce the reverse impact on other produce, particularly onions, melons, broccoli, and peaches. Their heightened ethylene sensitivity can accelerate ripening, making them go off more quickly, reports the Express. In another clever hack, @lifetips669 suggested popping prawns into an empty mineral water bottle, then filling it with tap water. "Tighten the cap and freeze it," they advised. "This way it stays fresh for a year". The TikTok user then proposed storing broccoli in water to "extend its freshness", and claimed that keeping onions in tights ensures they will "last a long time". More tips followed, with @lifetips669 suggesting applying tape to the top of tomatoes to extend their edible lifespan to two weeks, and placing two garlic cloves on a cut watermelon before sealing it with cling film to ward off bacteria. And just like spuds, @lifetips669 revealed that bananas bought in bulk "mould quicker". To tackle this, they suggested wrapping a bag around the stem so they'll "still be perfect" when you fancy eating them later on. For some, relaxing in the sunshine is their idea of a perfect day - but you need some suitable chairs. Most people likely bought items at the beginning of the season to make the most of the recent heatwaves. But, if people didn't - or simply need to revamp their existing seats, then Dunelm has a reduction on a set of "vibrant" colourful loungers that offer "optimal comfort." The Helsinki Loungers are available in twin bundles for £48.50, down from £69, in a deal that makes each seat cost just over £24. The set of two deal comes in two colours that aren't available if buying the same style of chair separately: navy blue and lilypad green. However, hundreds of shoppers posted glowing reviews online after ordering the Dunelm garden set. One said: "Lovely comfy reclining chairs, I actually fell asleep in them!" Another added: "Great value and lovely colour. Sturdy, easy to assemble and store. Very comfy to sit in too!" A third wrote: "Sturdy, easy to set up and super comfy. Perfect colour to go with our garden décor too (true to ad pictures), and they don't take a ton of space when folded away in the garage. At that price for a pair, you can't go wrong with these!" A few had some issues, though, as one claimed: "The cords that hold the seats to the frame are fraying heavily and have broken in several places. They are now unusable." And, another suggested: "Very comfortable chairs although a little fiddly to open." Someone else put: "The knobs that make them recline are plastic and so seem a bit fragile so not sure how long they will last. Also one of the chairs seems to very slowly go back to upright position, so have to keep adjusting it." However, the majority of feedback was positive. A satisfied shopper who awarded five stars in their review put: "Love these loungers - easy to fold and unfold, very comfortable. The green goes beautifully in my garden." One more posted: "Great design and very sturdy. Easy to use and move around the garden."
